Re: 01010
if you cannot find your wine bottle opener? i just received a case of kosher wine and wanted to drink some red wine. yeah yeah, i probably shouldn't, bc i am taking muscle relaxers, but this is my life....my body and i am not a big drinker. i just want to sleep and feel less physical pain and thinking this might help.

i thought i had unpacked my great cork opener and my oxygen taking out wine stoppers, but cannot find them anywhere?

any suggestions? i do not want to drink corky wine from the cork disintegrating into the bottle from a knife.....or am i just screwed? i don't really want to buy a new one since i have a nice one, but may need to do that tomorrow. i hate spending money while obama is in the WH. ugh.

any suggestions much appreciated...

If you have pliers and a phillips screwdriver, you can get a long phillips screw (maybe a door hinge screw), screw that into the cork and use the pliers to pull it out.

Take the bottle in one hand, and throw it hard as you can onto the floor. I recommend doing this outside. The cork will soon be out of that pesky bottle.

Re: 01010
The easiest way is to make one out of a coat hangar. Should take no more than 5 minutes unwind the twisty wraps of the wire at the neck, or cut it off if you have wire cutters or diagonal cutters. After making one piece out of it straighten the curves, take one end and sharpen it on a concrete block, sandpaper, file, stucco, a rock, even a sidewalk or the road. Then just bend it in a spiral shape with 3 tight coils and double up the rest into a handle you can use to push, twist, and pull on to extract the cork. Maybe 10 minutes without any tools or file.

Enjoy the wine!!!

Re: 01010
Flip the bottle upside down. (you'll have to put it between your legs or something probably) Get an icepick and put the point dead center on the bottom of the depression on the bottom of the bottle. Now put the handle of the ice pick in between your hands like you are praying. Start rubing your palms back and forth like you are cold and trying to warm you palms while putting downward pressure on the ice pick.
The friction will eventually make a hole about the size of a straw. Now i lol wondering how much of this post you actually read until it seemed like something was wrong.

Re: 01010
Pushing the cork won't work because the compression and pressure gets more powerful with each quarter of an inch you might manage to push it down. The air in the neck can compress but the wine doesn't compress and unless the space above the level of the wine is below where the cork could be pushed free of the sides of the bottle it won't work. If you have heavy equipment to push down with enough force to accomplish this task the bottle would explode from the pressure of the wine outwards. Physics principles says this approach is a no go.

or just push the cork into the bottle, but sometimes you will get chunks in the wine, not a big deal

it does work, and it's much quicker than making a corkscrew.

true.

thats why you tear the cork up

i've done this many times when i was younger because i didnt have a cork screw

the method in the link i left seems the best

claw hammer, screw a nail into the cork, use claw of hammer to pull out on the nail

microwave the bottle, the heat will increase the internal pressure and push the cork out.

Re: 01010
rubberband method

wrap a rubberband at the neck of bottle, not too stretched. put a few drops of lighter fluid or any accelerant. light it up and let it burn till it gets all hot. quickly douse the neck in water from faucet. the neck will cleanly snap off by itself because of the drastic temp change or you can help it a bit with a few taps from a spoon edge.

you can also use a string or yarn in place of rubberband.

cheers!

Re: 01010
My mother used to get a towel and fold it up to make it thicker , then place it on the wall, hold the towel with one hand, while holding the wine bottle in the other hand, and then bang the base of the wine bottle against the towel. The cork will come out enough for you to pull it out the rest of the way.
Sounds crazy , but it works.

Re: 01010
Any all night market or liquor store has cheap wine openers. Either the corkscrew type or the small flanges that go down beside the cork and allow you to elevate it with an upward pull/twist.

Keep the cheap wine openers with your pencils and pens and pads in a "junk drawer" so you'll always have one around. When you find a bunch of them on sale, buy five or six of them. Always handy to have spares for picnics and such... where you don't want to take you $190 opener.

Last time I was in that position I figured I would push the cork down into the bottle after whittling around it with a steak knife.

Glad I didn't need any stitches.
