Realistically, you will want to be at least 100 miles, preferably downwind.

If you are much closer.. The logjam of survivors trying to escape will keep you right in the fallout zone, out in the open and exposed.

Try to be atleast 100 miles away or 100 inches from ground zero... Sorry, that's the no BS info... Hope it helps.
