Syria says United States lying on chemical weapons use

BEIRUT - Syria's foreign ministry said the United States was lying about chemical weapons use to give it an excuse to intervene in the country's two-year-old civil war.

"The White House...relied on fabricated information in order to hold the Syrian government responsible for using these weapons, despite a series of statements that confirmed that terrorist groups in Syria have chemical weapons," it said.

"The United States, in resorting to a shameful use of pretexts in order allow President Obama's decision to arm the Syrian opposition, shows that it has flagrant double standards in the way it deals with terrorism."

Russia: US claims of Syria chemical arms use unconvincing

MOSCOW- Information the United States provided Russia over suspected use of chemical weapons by Syrian President Bashar Assad's forces "does not look convincing," President Vladimir Putin's senior foreign policy adviser said on Friday.

Yuri Ushakov said expanded US military support for Assad's opponents would undermine joint efforts to organize a peace conference, but added that Moscow was "not yet" considering sending Assad S-300 anti-aircraft missile systems in response.

France says UN decision on Syria no-fly zone 'unlikely'

PARIS - France said on Friday that establishing a no-fly zone in Syria was unlikely for now because of opposition from some members of the United Nations Security Council.

"The problem with this type of measure is that it can only be put in place with approval from the international community," French foreign ministry spokesman Philippe Lalliot told journalists.

"A decision from the United Nations Security Council is needed, and not just any decision," he said. A Chapter 7 resolution authorizing military action was needed and that was unlikely to be passed, he said.

Britain holds off arming Syrian rebels despite US decision

LONDON - Britain is still not ready to arm the Syrian opposition despite a decision by US President Barack Obama to do so, but is not ruling out the introduction of a no-fly zone or any other measure, a spokesman for Prime Minister David Cameron said on Friday.

"Nothing is off the table," the spokesman said when asked whether Britain would back a no-fly zone, adding that "no decision has been taken" on arming the opposition. "We are in urgent discussions with our international partners."

Russia: Data on chemical arms use by Assad fabricated

MOSCOW - A senior pro-Kremlin Russian lawmaker said on Friday that information on the use of chemical weapons by Syrian President Bashar Assad's forces was fabricated and suggested the United States would use it to justify intervention in the conflict.

A US official said on Thursday that President Barack Obama has authorized sending US weapons to Syrian rebels for the first time, after the White House said it has proof the Syrian government had used chemical weapons against opposition forces.

"Information about the use by Assad of chemical weapons has been fabricated in the same place as the lies about (Saddam) Hussein's weapons of mass destruction," Alexei Pushkov, head of the foreign policy committee in the lower chamber of the Russian parliament, said on Twitter. "Obama is taking the same path as George Bush."

Germany won’t supply weapons to Syrian rebels - Foreign Ministry

"Berlin will not itself supply Syrian rebels with weapons, Foreign Ministry spokesman Andreas Peschke said Friday. However, Germany “takes into account” the US’s decision to do so and Washington’s statement that chemical weapons had been used by the Syrian government forces, he added. Germany supports efforts to hold an international conference on the Syria conflict and will insist that this issue be discussed by the UN Security Council, the spokesman said."

Moscow concerned about Western states’ decisions to arm Syrian rebels

"Russia is seriously concerned by the decision of the US and other states to give military assistance to the Syrian opposition on the so-called “liberated territories,” spokesman for the Russian Foreign Ministry Aleksandr Lukashevich said on Friday. The military aid would be rendered under the pretext of having alleged proof of the use of chemical weapons by Syrian authorities. He reminded of the killings of 60 Shia in Hatla village in Syria’s Deir el-Zour region near Iraq, perpetrated by Al-Nusra Front fighters, adding that the Syrian government asked the UN Security Council to condemn the massacre."

U.S. 'backed plan to launch chemical weapon attack on Syria and blame it on Assad's regime'

"Leaked emails have allegedly proved that the White House gave the green light to a chemical weapons attack in Syria that could be blamed on Assad's regime and in turn, spur international military action in the devastated country.

A report released on Monday contains an email exchange between two senior officials at British-based contractor Britam Defence where a scheme 'approved by Washington' is outlined explaining that Qatar would fund rebel forces in Syria to use chemical weapons.

Barack Obama made it clear to Syrian president Bashar al-Assad last month that the U.S. would not tolerate Syria using chemical weapons against its own people."

Germany’s BND intelligence agency restores security cooperation with Assad regime

"Diplomatic sources have revealed that the head of Germany’s BND intelligence agency went to Damascus last month for an unscheduled visit during which he met with Syrian officials led by Major General Ali Mamlouk, the head of Syrian military intelligence. Gerhard Schindler made the trip to Damascus just days after Israel’s bombing raid on the Syrian capital on May 5 accompanied by the Director of the German intelligence unit dedicated to fighting “international terrorism”.

The security chief was passed information about the jihadist organisations which are fighting against the Assad regime in Syria. This information was obtained by Syrian intelligence after the capture of a number of jihadist leaders. The data includes the names of some foreign fighters, especially Europeans, who are fighting alongside those groups. Representatives from the intelligence agencies in Italy, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen have arrived in Damascus for the same purpose.

The sources also claim that one of the objectives of Schindler’s visit was to reach an agreement by which Israel will allow Hezbollah to enter Syria to defend the regime, as long as “that does not affect the interests of Israel”.

Although the German government has supported the sanctions imposed on the Assad regime and has stressed repeatedly the necessity for him to step down, it now looks as if there is a noticeable shift in Berlin’s assessment of the conflict. News magazine Der Spiegel’s May 22 edition quoted Schindler as saying, “The Syrian army has now become very organised with the best combat experience after two years of armed conflict, in addition to its capacity to counter armed rebels and defeat them.”"

With Scandals Raging At Home, Obama (Conveniently) Discovers Chemical Weapons Use in Syria

"Barely a week after President Obama announced the ascendance of the left-neocon, humanitarian interventionist cultists Susan Rice and Samantha Power to the top of his foreign policy team, and in a time of choking scandal, alas a light at the end of the tunnel has appeared for the Obama regime: his old friend war!

The entirety of the US corporate media is breathlessly -- and, predictably, in lockstep -- amplifying the Obama administration's sudden amazingly convenient discovery that the Syrian government has used chemical weapons after all!

Just a few weeks ago the US Intelligence Community did not believe claims that the Syrian government used chemicals, then, after scolded by the Israelis they changed their tune to a very qualified "maybe." Now, with no formal investigation at all and no word on the chain of evidence or its source, we are told with absolute certainty that the Assad government has used the weapons. And they can't tell us because it is secret! Just like magic these things happen when needed!"

Importing Jihad: Obama Considers Resettling Thousands of Syrian Refugees in America

"More of Obama's immigration war on America. Obama supports the jihadist opposition in Syria -- al Qaeda elements. And he is bringing those savages here? He has turned a blind eye to religious minorities that are being persecuted under Muslim rule. So it will be more Muslim immigration. Clearly, jihadist groups linked to al Qaeda pose a grave security concern. It’s another giant middle finger to the American people by the Obama administration, endangering national security.

We have suffered the effects of importing whole Muslim communities from jihad regions (i.e. Somalia). More here. Law enforcement officials have reported to Congress on the growing Somali Muslim threat.

This will be worse.

The growing concern of 'Home-Grown,' Spectacular Jihad Growing Problem, Authorities Fear" is a direct result of the huge influx of whole Muslim communities from jihad areas and nations into the US since 911."

Obama promises more aid to Al Qaeda-linked jihadists in Syria, Claims ‘Red Line’ crossed on Chemical Weapons Use, despite UN Human Rights Counter claims

"United Nations human rights investigators said they have gathered testimony from outside Syria suggesting that rebels, not Bashar Assad's regime, may have used chemical weapons.

“Our investigators have been in neighboring countries interviewing victims, doctors and field hospitals and, according to their report of last week which I have seen, there are strong, concrete suspicions but not yet incontrovertible proof of the use of sarin gas, from the way the victims were treated,” Carla Del Ponte, a member of the independent commission of inquiry on Syria, told Swiss-Italian television. “This was use on the part of the opposition, the rebels, not by the government authorities.”

But as is Obama's wont, he creates his own narrative to side with jihadists and Islamic supremacists.

The White House announced Thursday that the Obama administration has concluded that the Assad regime has used chemical weapons "multiple times" in Syria in the last year, resulting in the deaths of 100 to 150 people. The White House also announced that in response it would "increase the scope and scale of assistance that we provide to the opposition."

"Following a deliberative review, our intelligence community assesses that the Assad regime has used chemical weapons, including the nerve agent sarin, on a small scale against the opposition multiple times in the last year," said Deputy National Security Adviser Ben Rhodes in a statement.

Referring to President Barack Obama's warning of chemical weapons use crossing a "red line," Rhodes said "he has said that the use of chemical weapons would change his calculus, and it has."

As for a further response, "The United States and the international community have a number of other legal, financial, diplomatic, and military responses available. We are prepared for all contingencies, and we will make decisions on our own timeline.""

Russia Hits Back at U.S. Over Syria

"MOSCOW—The Kremlin Friday dismissed as unconvincing evidence that U.S. officials provided of Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad's alleged use of chemical weapons and criticized Washington's decision to arm Syrian opposition fighters, but stopped short of threatening to deliver air-defense missiles to the Assad government in response.

A senior Kremlin official said Moscow is "not yet" discussing the delivery of the advanced air-defense system in the wake of the U.S. decision. Last month, Russian officials threatened to fulfill the 2010 contract for the S-300 missiles as a way to deter potential outside military intervention in the two-year-old Syrian civil war. Western powers and Israel have staunchly opposed the sale of the system.

Mr. Ushakov cited the flawed intelligence assessment from the administration of former President George W. Bush about weapons of mass destruction in the run-up to the Iraq war but said he didn't want to "draw any parallels."

Other Russian officials were more direct. ["The data on Assad's use of chemical weapons is fabricated just like the lies about weapons of [Saddam] Hussein's weapons of mass destruction," read a tweet on the feed of Alexei Pushkov, chairman of the Russian parliament's international relations committee. "Obama is going down the path of G. Bush."

Ben Rhodes, the White House Deputy National Security Advisor for Strategic Communications, said the conclusion that Mr. Assad's regime has wielded chemical weapons was based on physical samples taken from Syria. He said the U.S. relied on "multiple, independent streams of information" and has "high confidence" in the assessment. He cited four dates and locations during which the U.S. thinks Mr. Assad's regime employed chemical weapons.

Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said the move suggests U.S. efforts to bring the opposition to the peace talks had stalled. He said pumping arms into Syria will increase "the level of armed confrontation and violence against civilians" and reiterated Russia's commitment to a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

The U.S.'s decision to arm Syria's opposition fighters could change the balance of power on the ground in the war-torn country, where Mr. Assad's troops recently have been gaining an edge over beleaguered opposition fighters. U.S. officials have stressed that Mr. Assad, backed by Hezbollah, has been making gains more than two years into a violent conflict that has left more than 90,000 people dead, according to United Nations figures.

Syria's government signed a contract in 2010 to buy four S-300 batteries with 144 missiles for $900 million, and the first deliveries were scheduled to start in summer 2013. The weapons could change the power dynamic in the Middle East and help the Assad regime prevent the sort of military campaign Western governments organized to aid rebels fighting Col. Moammar Gadhafi in Libya."

White House plan to arm Syrian rebels raises fears of terrorist links

"As the White House appeared poised to send military aid to Syrian rebels, new concerns arose that the weapons will inevitably fall into the hands of terrorist groups who count themselves among hundreds of factions that form the rag-tag Free Syrian Army.

Initial military aid is expected to consist of small arms and ammunition. That could include a range of weapons, including small arms, assault rifles, shoulder-fired rocket-propelled grenades and other anti-tank missiles which the opposition forces could operate without significant training. But the rebel Free Syrian Army, which now gets light arms from Saudi Arabia and Qatar, said on Friday more light weaponry from the U.S. would be largely “meaningless.” The Syrian Opposition Coalition called for “strategic and decisive” support.

The Wall Street Journal reported that the U.S. could try to establish a "no-fly zone" inside Syria to protect civilians fleeing the fighting and rebels who might train there. The White House did not say if this is an option currently under consideration.

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., who recently met with Syrian rebel leaders, said he was told Thursday that Obama had decided to "provide arms to the rebels," a decision confirmed by three U.S. officials, according to The Associated Press. But McCain said on the Senate floor Thursday that the rebels desperately need more powerful armaments.

"These people of the Free Syrian Army need weapons and heavy weapons to counter tanks and aircraft, they need a no-fly zone," McCain said. "Just providing arms is not enough"

But keeping the weapons away from the most militant factions of the Free Syrian Army could prove impossible, according to critics. They say light weapons piped into the rebels have already fallen into the wrong hands.

"Already some of those weapons… have been shown in radical militants’ hands," Elizabeth O’Bagy, a senior research analyst at the Institute for the Study of War, told the Financial Post earlier this year. "And even though the weapons are significantly better than they were before, they are still not the sophisticated kind the opposition would like.”

McCain spokesman Brian Rogers told FoxNews.com the U.S. can support the more moderate elements of the Free Syrian Army without putting weapons into the hands of groups like Jabhat al-Nusra, the Al Qaeda linked Iraqi group that has become a powerful force within the rebel army.

"The more radical elements have gained strength because we have not supported the moderate elements," Rogers said. "Our inaction to support those in Syria that share our same goals has had the impact of emboldening and strengthening the more radical element who are supported by some actors in the region."

In Mecca, Saudi cleric urges followers to back Syria rebels

"DUBAI - A senior cleric in Islam's holy city Mecca exhorted followers on Friday to support Syrian rebels by "all means", the latest in a series of rhetorical attacks on President Bashar Assad reflecting rising sectarian tension across the Middle East.

His appeal came at a time when momentum on the battlefield has been shifting in Assad's favor, just a few months after analysts wrote him off, making the prospect of his swift removal and an end to Syria's civil war look remote in the near future.

The Sunni Muslim-led revolt against Iranian-backed Assad, whose Alawite minority is a branch of Shi'ite Islam, has taken on sectarian overtones since the open intervention last month of Lebanon's Shi'ite Hezbollah guerrillas on Assad's side.

In a sermon to worshippers at Saudi Arabia's Grand Mosque in Mecca, Sunni Sheikh Saoud al-Shuraym denounced Assad as a tyrant whose troops he said had raped women, killed children and destroyed homes over the past two years.

"All of that puts on the shoulder of each one of us a share of responsibility before God, on leaders, rulers, scholars, reformers, thinkers and people to take a unified and conscious stand against the mad (crackdown) on our brothers in Syria," Shuraym said in a sermon broadcast on Saudi state television.

"By God..., our brothers need more efforts and determination to be exerted to remove the merciless injustice and aggression through all means and with no exceptions," he told followers. "We tell our brothers in the Levant to be patient.""

Syrian rebels pledge loyalty to al-Qaeda

"BEIRUT — A Syrian rebel group's April pledge of allegiance to al-Qaeda's replacement for Osama bin Laden suggests that the terrorist group's influence is not waning and that it may take a greater role in the Western-backed fight to topple Syrian President Bashar Assad.

The pledge of allegiance by Syrian Jabhat al Nusra Front chief Abou Mohamad al-Joulani to al-Qaeda leader Sheik Ayman al-Zawahri was coupled with an announcement by the al-Qaeda affiliate in Iraq, the Islamic State of Iraq, that it would work with al Nusra as well.

Lebanese Sheik Omar Bakri, a Salafist who says states must be governed by Muslim religious law, says al-Qaeda has assisted al Nusra for some time.

"They provided them early on with technical, military and financial support , especially when it came to setting up networks of foreign jihadis who were brought into Syria," Bakri says. "There will certainly be greater coordination between the two groups."

The United States, which supports the overthrow of Assad, designated al Nusra a terrorist entity in December. The Obama administration has said it wants to support only those insurgent groups that are not terrorist organizations.

Al Nusra and groups like it have seen some of the most significant victories against Syrian government forces in the course of the 2-year-old uprising in which Assad's forces have killed about 80,000 people. Rebels not affiliated with al-Qaeda have pressed Washington for months to send weaponry that will allow them to match the heavy weapons of the Syrian army. They've urged the West to mount an air campaign against Assad's mechanized forces.

He confirmed that al Nusra is generating loyalty in Aleppo, a region battling for months with Assad, by providing financial support as well as setting up charities.

Aaron Zelin at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy in Washington says al Nusra's ability to provide security and basic needs such as bread and fuel to Syrian civilians, as well as to reopen shops and restart bus services, has won gratitude from people who would not usually adhere to its strict ideology."

Russia: Enforcing Syria no-fly zone violates law

"MOSCOW - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Saturday any attempt to enforce a no-fly zone over Syria using F-16 fighter jets and Patriot missiles from Jordan would violate international law.

"There have been leaks from Western media regarding the serious consideration to create a no-fly zone over Syria through the deployment of Patriot anti-aircraft missiles and F-16 jets in Jordan," said Lavrov, speaking at a joint news conference with his Italian counterpart.

"You don't have to be a great expert to understand that this will violate international law," he said."

Thousands of Egypt Islamists rally for Syria jihad

"AFP - Thousands of Islamists rallied in the Egyptian capital on Friday in support of calls by Sunni Muslim clerics for a holy war against the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

The demonstration took place outside a Cairo mosque where Saudi preacher Mohammed al-Oreifi called in a sermon for a "jihad in the cause of Allah in Syria."

Oreifi urged worshippers to "unite against their enemy."

Saudi Arabia, like Egypt, is an overwhelmingly Sunni Muslim country, and Sunnis are the backbone of the revolt against Assad, whose Alawite sect is an offshoot of Shiite Islam.

Demonstrators, most of them bearded and wearing the traditional white galabiya, shouted "there is no God but Allah, and Bashar is his enemy."

People waved not only the Egyptian flag but also the one adopted by the Syrian opposition."
