4 cases from same area, same hospital (Royal Columbian in New Westminster).

Public Health trying to snow the public, saying no cause for concern. Seriously ? The Fraser Valley is a major producer of beef, dairy, and poultry.

CDC is already making it clear they will go to any length to determine the source of this outbreak including but not limited too private homes, work places, medical and travel records, supermarkets, farms, meat packing plants.

I remember when the bird flu hit down here and there was a mass poultry slaughter. I can't imagine what it will be like if they go for the cattle. Between the dairy and beef industry it's going to be a massive undertaking (pun fully intended).

As a cattleman, my only comment is it is obvious this is not coming from feed sources. It has been 10 years or more since the things that were suppose to have caused this were banned. WTF!

Thing is, human mad cow is exceedingly rare in Canada. There are 5-7 confirmed cases per year (maybe more which go undiagnosed). Too have 4 cases in one very specific geographic area, same age group, all at the same hospital has got to be more than just a statistical anomaly.

This is not mad cow disease(vCJD) it is "classic" Creutzfeldt-Jakob.
This happens in one in a million people spontaneously and can only be spread by contaminated surgical instruments!!!

Many people do not understand the difference including reporters and journalists......causing false alarm!

For sCJD to be truly spontaneous/classic it must not occur in clusters. A cluster is generally thought to be anything more than the average 1/1 million.

Recent info suggests that the local health authority has been investigating up to 6 cases with 4 confirmed. All patients are from the same locale (within 50 km of each other). They are close in age. These patients have been in hospital for 'some time'.

If this were a case of surgical contaminant transmission, patient 0 would have been identified by now. I do not believe it is a case of surgical contamination. The health authority has already stated that they are investigating causes unrelated to hospitalization. It sounds to me like they believe these cases are community acquired.

The group of patients underwent surgery at Beaumont Hospital.

They were operated on using instruments that had been used on another patient who was later diagnosed with Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD).

this is a silent time bomb that is ticking...remember the spike in mad cow disease in the US in mid 200s well this disease stays dormant in people for over a decade....spike in alzheimers or is it mad cow?

forget that there are non invasive cheap molecular diagnostic tests that can be created and sold where cattle ranchers can test every animal for safety...

but that would mean a lot of animals would need to get slaughtered (infected) and huge losses to cattle ranchers and meat industry...
