Investigators have collected all the necessary evidence — they are pretty certain what caused the fire and where it ignited. But they lack key details: who started it and whether it was done accidentally or intentionally. "I'm hopeful that somebody is just going to come forward," said Lt. Adrian Vasquez, the leader of the investigation task force, which includes FBI agents and El Paso County investigators. "Without somebody coming forward, ... I don't know that we are going to solve this." [link to gazette.com] |

"I'm pretty confident that natural causes will be out the window," he said. With two deaths already blamed on the fire, investigators will focus on whether the cause was arson or an accident. "We didn't have lightning in the area. Lightning is usually one of the contributing factors we first look at in the area when it comes to natural causes," Maketa said. |

The reward for information into the identity of the person or persons who started the fire is $100,000. It was previously ruled by investigators that the Waldo Canyon Fire was caused by human means. It is not known if the fire was started accidentally or intentionally. Anyone who may have suspect information can call (719) 385-2222. According to authorities, this is the only phone number to call to receive a reward. Separate reward money is also available for any suspect information that leads to the identification and arrest of the persons involved in the home and vehicle burglaries in the evacuation area. The Waldo Canyon Fire started on June 23, 2012 and was declared 100 percent contained on July 10. More than 32,000 residents were evacuated as the fire invaded west Colorado Springs. Childhood and adolescent individuals are usually associated with ADHD or adjustment disorders.[9] Pyromaniacs have also been associated with abnormal cravings of power and social prestige." "Someone suffering from this disorder deliberately and purposely sets fires on more than one occasion, and before the act of lighting the fire the person usually experiences tension and an emotional buildup. [link to www.dailymail.co.uk] This is not true. Many firefighters are arsonists. Every now and then one actually gets publicized. Arsonists are like serial killers and often blend in and seem normal to casual acquaintances and colleagues. Some are probably hired or commandeered by TPTB to carry out domestic terror like this under the guise of acts of God or random tragedies. |

It's called the coward's crime, the most under-reported crime next to rape and the least understood. Its practitioners range from mentally unstable pyromaniacs to little children to hired professional ``torches.'' The tools are everywhere - cigarette lighters, matches, newspapers, many household products. Planning is not a necessity. The power of fire is also the most power some of these people will ever possess. But who is he, or she, this arsonist?" "The crime of arson has fascinated psychiatrists and criminologists for years. One reason is that there are different types of arsonists, and while some overlap, the motive for the arson somewhat determines the profile. Why does the person set the fire? Is it a rational act, or is it a compulsion? Is it a business operation with cold cash on the line, or is it revenge? Is there immediate or delayed sexual gratification as the flames leap? Is there a feeling of anger, or just power, as the individual stands in a crowd watching the destruction that he has wrought? Fire officials have created six or seven categories of arsonists - at the two extremes, the true pyromaniac and the professional ``torch.'' While accounting for a small percentage of arson, psychologically these two are the farthest apart." [link to community.seattletimes.nwsource.com] |

"Among arsonists, certain characteristics keep cropping up." "It is generally accepted that arson is predominantly committed by males. The arsonist is usually not well-educated." "He comes from an unstable home where he may have been abused. He's usually short and slight. He is usually divorced or has never been married, has poor relations with others, particularly with women, and probably has a menial job. He may be known already to the local police and has little or no self-confidence." "The professional ``torch'' is the opposite. He tends to come from a higher socio-economic background. He makes relatively big bucks burning buildings to collect the insurance. His counterpart, the ``thug torch,'' is far less expert but far cheaper." "The real pro tends to be older. He often is a heavy drinker, but unlike some arsonists who need alcohol to give them courage to start the fire, the pro is likely to be stone sober when he enters a building to take it down." "He is probably a fairly nocturnal individual, possibly nomadic, likely to be single or divorced." "Another type well known to the fire-fighting world is the ``vanity'' or ``hero'' fire maker." "The FBI study found that women turn up in significant numbers, 28 percent, only in the revenge-motivated category, a category that makes up 14 percent of all arsons." "...pyromaniacs usually follow rather rigid patterns, starting fires when and where no one is likely to be around. The fires also tend to occur in geographic clusters. The pyromaniac, he says, is often a male loner whose background includes a domineering mother and a weak or nonexistent father. Ironically, the principal male figure in his life probably worked at job in which fire played a significant role, such as a firefighter, steel-mill worker or incinerator operator." Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 41668635 United States 06/15/2013 01:41 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Time and point of origin of the Waldo Canyon fire. June 23, 2012 (Sat) "A jogger who was running along a trail in the rugged Waldo Canyon about 7 a.m. smelled smoke, and decided to veer off onto a dog-leg. There he ran into an active fire - about 100 feet by 100 feet in size, and growing as it smoldered through dry fuel. As soon as the jogger got cell phone reception about 45 minutes later, he called authorities. But the man's name, number and exact location went unrecorded by dispatch, and the sheriff's office and fire investigators did not know about the call until days later. The dispatcher had been briefed about the June 22 smoke investigation - dubbed the Pyramid Mountain Fire - and assumed that all smoke-related calls fit under that umbrella. 'Pueblo Forest Service checked on that last night. They said they would be sending up another unit first thing this morning to check on it, but they are aware of it and they will be up there shortly this morning,' the dispatcher told the jogger before hanging up. It is likely that the jogger and the fire crews were in the forest at the same time. But the jogger had found something the crews had not: actual fire." From the Denver newspaper: "Colorado wildfire: Ridge along hiking trail may contain origin of catastrophic Waldo Canyon Fire" 07/06/2012 "The deadly Waldo Canyon fire appears to have started just off a hiking trail west of Colorado Springs, a location that firefighters searched unsuccessfully the day before the wind-fanned blaze exploded June 23. Although El Paso County Sheriff's Lt. Jeff Kramer said he was "not at liberty" to reveal the precise point of origin, coordinates posted on a federal fire-management website and dispatch recordings of conversations between firefighters indicate the fire started on a ridge along the popular Waldo Canyon hiking trail." "The fire was officially reported at about noon June 23 and went on to burn 18,247 acres" "The El Paso County Sheriff's Office late Saturday night issued a news release confirming that a resident in Crystal Park reported seeing smoke in the hills north of Cave of the Winds at 7:49 p.m. June 22." |
