iPhone requiring carrier settings to be updated?

Remember just a few months ago when they passed a law in the US making it illegal to unlock your phone (change carriers)? Guess they're blocking it in Canada, too.

I just got it as well and I'm in the US.


The update now sends me AMBER, emergency, and presidential alerts.

Go figure.

It's not illegal to unlock your phone if you have the service provider do it. It's not illegal to switch carriers with a properly unlocked phone, either.

It's not illegal to unlock your iPhone. It's not even illegal if you get someone other than your service provider to do it. It just breaks your contract by going with another provider. It's like jailbreaking your phone. It's not illegal to jailbreak your phone, it just voids the warranty. I work for apple and while we cant unlock the phones I can assure you that the carriers definitely can. Some refuse, some make you pay an outrageous fee, some may lie and tell you its not possible. But it is possible and NOT illegal.
