Scenario- What would you have done?
Best Answer wins!

I was lured to a new company a few months ago. I was told
I would be in charge of a new device rolling out any day.
After accepting the position, making 75K plus $500 a month
car allowance, with no sales quota, I was pulled into the
office and told the project was put on hold. Now, we would
like you to be part of a "pilot" program and take the lead
over 3 buildings we own. Jane, the regional director, hands
you her card and states "We are so glad you are helping us,
I have promised everyone that you will be there"

1 day after accepting said position, I learn that I am taking a $10K reduction in salary, and no car allowance, and
now required to drive upwards of 120 miles per DAY. It is
3 days before closing on a home we are buying so I continue
on.

2 weeks go by, and I can't get to the 3 buildings because
the company has me in the field calling on other clients.
I call "Jane" and let her know that I haven't been able
to get to the buildings, although my intentions are there,
the company has directed me otherwise.

I am called into the office at this point, and met with
"This is not working"

Re: Scenario- What would you have done?
Sounds like their and your expectations and goals are different and need to be ironed out. I suggest you set a personal meeting with whomever has their answers and explain your concerns. Let them know you are willing to listen and help out but everyone needs to be on the same page. Have them set your objectives out on paper so there is no ambiguity later on. After you've set your objectives to paper, have them agree that all managers and executives that have some control over your work will be notified as to what is expected of you so they can't be pulling you in different directions on their personal whims. Then Have follow up meetings periodically (not annual performance reviews) to access your performance to your agreed upon objectives and to modify them if neccassary. hf

I loathe corporations. They bring out the inhumanity in people.

Sorry to hear you are dealing with that.

Re: Scenario- What would you have done?
It is imperative you determine if their objectives for you are corporate or regionally driven as sometimes corporate doesn't know what regional executives are doing and might not even agree with their objectives if it isn't in the companies best interest. hf

I am not sure if you were called in to be 'let go' because things are not working, or if they just don't have your position ironed out yet? Two different outcomes, of course.

Re: Scenario- What would you have done?
Too late for anymore meetings.

I was brought into the office with HR, the GM, and the Director and told "this is not working". You called Jane
and went around us. You should have come to us first.

At which point I replied.. I agree , this is not working.
I called Jane because I told her I would be there and you
have done everything you can to keep me from doing my job.
I can't do what you want me to do.

I resigned in lieu of being fired!

So now, I am unemployed!! Yeah me! I have a new mortgage,
and no job.

The company heavily recruited me away from their competitor.
Once they hired me, they lied, manipulated me into scenarios
where I would lose. They had me driving all over town with no gas or mileage allowance. They reduced my pay after working there only 5 weeks. They said I would not have a quota, yet after starting, the quota turned into "expectations".

It was the most frustrating experience I have ever had. I
am better than that and felt, if I had stayed, the outcome
would have been worse. I am typically not paranoid, but
the GM wanted me gone and she was determined to get rid of
me one way or another.

Re: Scenario- What would you have done?
There was no contract, only initially a paper signed by the GM with my salary and car allowance. When they changed my
role, no other paper was given with the new salary.

They knew I was buying a home and would have to accept anything at that point. They probably wanted to fire me
then

When you are called into the office and the HR person is there, its pretty obvious you are about to be fired!

Sorry about that, I've seen this before and is usually due to not getting your expected objectives in writing after you were hired. hf

Re: Scenario- What would you have done?
True, huge lessons learned for me. My role actually changed 3 times over a period of 7 weeks.
Device educator, marketer, then lead over the 3 buildings.
None worked out because their expectations and what I was directed to do, were all different. The scheduler sent me in
one direction, the supervisor wanted me in another, the GM had her expectations, and the regional director was shocked that I never did what she needed me to do!

Should I even put this on my resume? The one good thing about all of this is this company has a reputation of firing and hiring. The HR person looks exhausted! If you
work here and quit or are fired, other companies actually
sympathize with you.

I have several interviews lined up, and fingers crossed,
life will go on.

I've just never experienced anything like this in my whole
career (27 years as an RN)

I was told by new company that old company was closing all offices in my state. They were strongly encouraging me to
get out now!
They lured me with $$, benefits, and the no quota (all of which they took away after 5 weeks)

I called the old company Friday, and because I couldn't give
a 30 day notice (I gave 2 weeks) and I am now a do not rehire!

That's the thing, I am a very good nurse! My supervisor called me twice last week, said "they set you up to fail"
"you have the patient's best interest at heart"
She is willing to give me a good reference.

LOL true, what was I thinking? this is a doom board.

If this isn't a conspiracy where I was at ground zero,
I don't know what is. We all have our personal doom. Being set up, fired, lied to... its DOOM at its finest! I
love this board because people here think like me. I'm always looking at the angle, seeking the truth, and hate
being lied to by those in power.

I'm not really trying to beat up on ya but....

look at your decision making skills:

You let the influence of Money drive this whole ordeal

you let the "new" company tell you a lie and gobbled it up for Money

you bought a "new" house because of Money

the `ol "the grass is NOT always greener on the other side"

sadly it looks like you found out the hard way.

Re: Scenario- What would you have done?
This is true. However, the new house, was less money
than the old house (which we made a small profit on) so the
move was good!

Next job, I won't be so easy to convince. Lessons learned!!
