However their beliefs are more varied these days, like most people. Traditional Judaism firmly believes that death is not the end of human existence. However, because Judaism is primarily focused on life here and now rather than on the afterlife, Judaism does not have much dogma about the afterlife, and leaves a great deal of room for personal opinion. It is possible for an Orthodox Jew to believe that the souls of the righteous dead go to a place similar to the Christian heaven, or that they are reincarnated through many lifetimes, or that they simply wait until the coming of the messiah, when they will be resurrected. Likewise, Orthodox Jews can believe that the souls of the wicked are tormented by demons of their own creation, or that wicked souls are simply destroyed at death, ceasing to exist. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 9104112 So you were born with all the secrets of the heavens in the palm of your hand, or you are just a pathetic bored nutjob. Either way, if you don't like religion - based threads- go play in your corner. Now onto the question of the thread: Judaism does not emphasize the after life, referred to as the olam habah, or the world to come. We are put on earth to do our best here, not to focus too much on what is to come. but many Jews do believe in an afterlife, since it is mentioned in the Torah, the Prophets, and the Writings (taken all together, these are the books of the Old Testament). Sheol is specifically mentioned as a place of suffering after death. Most Jews believe little about the next phase, or that it is like sleep. They ignore the their own writings, unless it was in the Torah, or the first five books of the Old Testament, it is often given very little attention for adults or children. And most references to the afterlife that I am aware of are after the books of the Torah.
