So, wait a minute. If I wind an electromagnet around an air core, it won't generate any magnetism? Is that what IDW is saying?

So all those air core transformers don't have any magnetic field until you stick some iron near them  So what are you going to attract with the magnetic field of the coil? how are you going to know it's there?  A solenoid has a ferrous metal core. The only way to detect a magnetic field is with a ferrous metal You just can't google around it, it's an absolute. People who cannot understand this are not suited for science. There are far too many of them who cannot understand the very simplest of facts trying to pretend they are science oriented..
