Re: Why are most of us afraid of death?
I'm not afraid because I medically "died" and know what it's like to disconnect from this body. However, you should be scared. It will be ABSOLUTELY TERRIFYING. Brace yourself, is all I can say.

You'll see. But you will go with the flow and ride it out, like everyone else. You'll be pissing yourself though (if you still had a body, that is...lol).

Re: Why are most of us afraid of death?
I think the OP mean't fearing death as a whole. I mean, we all die some day, many people die even sooner than expected. His question may be better explained by this literary analogy: In the book "The Silmarilion", written by Tolkien, there is a part called the fall of Numenor, where it says that when the king of Numenor arrested Sauron and brought him to his island, Sauron willingly allowed himself to be taken captive.

Once he was in Numenor he deceived the king until he became his high counselor, he then proceeded to create a new religion of darkness based in ritual sacrifice, worship of Melkor (the darklord of the first age who corrupted him), worship of immortality and fear of death.

He did it in order to break the numenoreans connection to the gods of the West and make them covet their immortality, especially the numenorean king. He knew that by doing this he would set the numenoreans against their gods which would prompt their fall and thus he would defeat them without exposing himself and pave the way to declare himself ruler of all Middle-Earth.

Though this is a work of fiction, his books are based in several mythological roots, mainly from Europe, which is itself based in the cultures of old religions. I think it's a great parellel (wether intentional or not) between the fear of death created by the monotheistic religions to divide and conquer us (or our souls).

Re: Why are most of us afraid of death?
Well seeing as this is Hell for the fact the moment your born into this world you begin to decay towards death & most are "burning" eating from Hell's kitchen with all the acidic foods out there, we should b excited the day we r freed from this trap (just don't get tricked into coming back), lol... most the ancients spent this life preparing for their departure cuz memory is the key to ascending to a higher realm without recycling.. Life is only a dream, dreams r reality & realities r dreams.. the only thing real is existence & our I Am presence, & reality can b manipulated. Most may b afraid of death cuz they forgot who/what they are, pure consciousness

Thank you for understanding. It's my theory that people want to be understood more than they want to be loved. Anyway, you are the only other person who i have witnessed who believes the same, that we are tricked, or trick ourselves, to coming back here.

I don't even want to see hell. I sure don't deserve Heaven and being with Jesus Christ for eternity.
This is why i fear dying.

I've been looking forward to it for as long as I can remember. In fact I'm pretty damn excited about it. Nope I'm not religious but I know it's not the end and a body is just a vehicle.
The only thing I fear is the death of others, the people I love, not so much for them but for me, being without them. How selfish is that!

Most people fear death coz they're programmed to.

Re: Why are most of us afraid of death?
we fear the end of our existance, just like everyone else,
but in all honesty we dont value other existances, we simply
value what they mean and give to us, but its rare to find someone pridefull enough to reject having clones of someone.

we fear the unknown,

and we naturally drive to survive, yet some people may interpret this as "badass" regarding the situation those with
a rotten will to survive will resource to anything, those with a strong will, will resource to adrenaline, those with nothing
will resource to self preservation too.

I dont think its being dead that people are afraid of, I think its actually going through the process of dying that people are scared of.

So its not being dead, its whether or not you will be conscious and aware of your passing that people fear .... and rightly so.

Re: Why are most of us afraid of death?
Simple biology. Our amygdala is the oldest part of our brain that is wired to keep you alive. Well, wired so that you want to keep living in the face of death.

Other than that, my cerebral cortex has allowed to evaluate the world in which I live and develop a philosophy on life.

I want to keep on living because death is so boring. A state of never-ending, non-existence.

Sure, I can talk about how our mortality gives our lives more meaning etc. But in reality, it is mute. I simply don't want to die.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 41802573

Mortality gives our life more meaning? I reword that to "Life gives our existence more meaning", either way what's the difference, and more specifically is it really true?

Eternal infinite.. Purpose, it seems, is a concept we came up with because we could, but it neither adds nor takes away, it, like everything else, just is, whether we believe we added it to infinity or not.

Death, and the idea of death, really fucking sucks.

It was an Norwegian philosopher named Arne Naess who said the same thing.

He was looking forward to die so that he could find out how that was like.

I've been thinking a lot on those words....

I think I know what he ment, and I - sort of - looking forward to it myself. I have no hurry tho....

Arne found out when he was 97 years old.

:reincarnation:
 Quoting: tmorais

I maybe believe in reincarnation, but there's something who just don't adds upp about it.

Why are we beeing more and more and more people in this world if it's a neverending weel for us all? Where do all the souls come from?

My only theory is that most of us fail moving on to the next level, and that we have to try again.
 Quoting: Norse Viking

Its probably animals that have graduated to the human level that are increasing the numbers.

It also explains why there are many humans that are absolutely retarded in life and lack common sense and logic.

There might be a natural balance in order that is sort of a waiting list to be human if there arent enough bodies, so animals will be sent again to be animals until they learn more. But if there are more bodies than human souls, perhaps they are "graduated" too fast, dont get enough experience and knowledge, and it disrupts the whole balance.

Re: Why are most of us afraid of death?
Because we are indoctrinated to fear death during all our life.
 Quoting: tmorais

Yes, so that we would be easier to control.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 41878264

It's sort of instinctual to not want to die, could be some spiritually ground we are wired to, that we subconsciously know that it isn't easy getting here to be human with all these abilities and opportunities, so indoctrination has nothing to do with it.

You could believe this is hell and we all go to a heaven-like state, that is fine. But when you begin to die, and your body begins to fail you, and you are in agony, you want health over death.

The worst part about death, it seems, is fighting it. Why it is so hard to accept is due to our expectations and desires. For one we do not want to die. Two, we want to live long, happy, healthy, but when we are nowhere near our own ideal and we begin to experience the possible pains of death, or the reality of death, it makes it that much worse unless we just accept it.

Re: Why are most of us afraid of death?
I don't want to go through the motions of it.
Pain experience ect.
an off switch would be ideal.
 Quoting: ~Spaze*Man~

But think if you could be aware of your spirit leaving your body, and having the time to make amends, forgiving your enemies if even on your death bed, going quickly but knowingly and hopefully without pain, that would be nice, to be given the time and chance to realize your own acceptance of it!

If you do not accept it, that just makes it more painful.

the actual event seems a bit of a drag, even tho by all accounts, we pop out our bodies pretty quickly... no logical reason for fear...

i am Christ-centered... but i wonder if the natural fear of death is part of the mechanism of harvest... a negative aspect of our fallen state, like hate, greed, envy, deceit, etc...

we have gazed into the abyss of mortality and it gazes into us...

To be honest - I think the animals has reached the top of our existence.

I'm absolutely sure that an eagle who's flying free, or a trout swimming in some river in the Canadian wilderness has a far, far better life than ANY human being ever had or will have.

The animals are living a perfect symbiosis to the nature. WE are not even close to that!
