Did they give any thought about releasing more radioactivity from previous testing? Those poor souls downwind and elsewhere close by will be unwilling test subjects again!

Pentagon to Test a Huge Conventional Bomb

By Ann Scott Tyson
Washington Post Staff Writer

A huge mushroom cloud of dust is expected to rise over Nevada's desert in June when the Pentagon plans to detonate a gigantic 700-ton explosive -- the biggest open-air chemical blast ever at the Nevada Test Site -- as part of the research into developing weapons that can destroy deeply buried military targets, officials said yesterday.

The test, code-named "Divine Strake," will occur on June 2 about 90 miles northwest of Las Vegas in a high desert valley bounded by mountains, according to Pentagon and Energy Department officials.

"This is the largest single explosive we could imagine doing," said James A. Tegnelia, director of the Pentagon's Defense Threat Reduction Agency, which is conducting the test.

The test is aimed at determining how well a massive conventional bomb would perform against fortified underground targets -- such as military headquarters, biological or chemical weapons stockpiles, and long-range missiles -- that the Pentagon says are proliferating among potential adversaries around the world.

Tegnelia said there is a range of technical hurdles to overcome. He suggested that big conventional bombs are unlikely to solve the overall problem of buried threats. "It's a lot easier to dig your tunnel 50 feet deeper" than to develop weapons that can destroy it, he told a meeting of defense reporters.

Brandy, from what I've learned there is no nuclear device on this bomb, however, the concern is for any radioactive material left at the site from previous nuclear testing.

If I were you, I would contact my congresscritters and tell them of your concerns.

In this day and age, no one should be an unwilling victim.

Can anyone who studies these things answer a quick question or two that I have about this test?

I was wondering if this bomb has enough of a kick to affect an unstable fault line, and if so, then are there are any such fault lines nearby?

Brandy, I'm so sorry for your losses.

You are one of the poor souls I had in mind when I read the article.

You have every right to be concerned and outraged over this testing or any other testing in that area.

They know dayum right well that a bomb of that size will or has to disturb the earth on the sites of nuclear testing which was done years ago.

Insane. Absolutely insane these people are.

Bydoing, you might want to head to the US government sites on fault lines and check for any in that area.

It would stand to reason that bunker busting bombs which are designed to travel deep into the earth are also capable of triggering tremors, although I have no first-hand info on any of that type research.

Good luck and let us know what you find.

"What is a strake?"

I found this definition interesting.

*In aviation, a strake is an aerodynamic surface generally mounted on the fuselage of an aircraft to control airflow. The strake produces vortices by interacting with the airstream. Aircraft designers change the location, angle and shape of the strake to produce the desired interaction. The strake is commonly confused with a canard or a winglet.

What is a canard?

1) a small, forward-mounted wing, usually between the sponsons and often adjustable for trim, either by pivoting about a lateral axis or by hinged or sliding flaps on the trailing edge; also "foreplane" or "noseplane" in aeronautical terms;

Regrettably Polly, I have no background in the hard sciences, so I wouldn't even know what to look for. Needless to say, that means I am also geographically inept.
lol
I don't even know where this test site is. But I know there are many knowledgeable people at GLP who might have an answer...and so I put the question out there.

I just noticed another thread posted called "SAN ADNREAS Rumblings MYSTIFY Scientists..."
[link to www.godlikeproductions.com]

A bit further down, another poster noted that "This devine strake crap is only 300 odd miles from this occurence!"

Put together, this certainly does call into question the wisdom of such a test.

It hasn't been detonated yet and you are linking it to some rumblings of the most active fault on the continent?

Umm...Yah...K...

As for worrying about 700 tons of ANFO being detonated in a canyon, don't you think it would have been more of a problem back in the day when they were detonating megaton (million lb TNT equivalent) weapons above and below ground?...

Why does anyone actually believe that this test is of a conventional bomb rather than a atomic bomb?

If you were in the Cheney administration and you wanted to test the latest nuclear bunker buster before dropping it onto Iran, wouldn't you want to test it in the American desert first, to make sure it had a sufficiently destructive effect? And wouldn't you tell the press and other countries that the bomb was conventional rather than nuclear, even if you then have to explain its seismic impact by claiming that the bomb weighs 700 tons, far more than any airplane in the world can lift?

If you do 'fib' this way, who is going to call you on it? You certainly aren't going to allow outsiders, much less the press, to actually observe the bomb at close hand. And beyond sight distance, the effect of a micronuclear weapon will be indistinguishable from that of a mythical 700-ton conventional bomb, so independent labs won't know the difference. (Or if they do detect any anomaly, a simple threat of losing their grants will suffice to keep them silent, as we've already seen with respect to 9/11.)

Perhaps the more advanced foreign countries might detect an anomaly, but they aren't going to make their concerns public without proof, which they won't have. (Or if they do have such sensitive equipment, they will not want to make that capability public anyway.)

The only country that might possibly openly accuse the United States of lying about a nuclear test would be Iran--and the mainstream media has already drowned out that country's honest speech with MSM lies. Besides, even Iran has been unwilling to expose America's 9/11 lie. (Darn!)

The bottom line is that we have every reason to believe that the June test is of the same type of nuclear weapon that will be dropped on Iran. The 700-ton conventional bomb is just as mythical as Godzilla.

I am asking the questions because I don't know. I am also wondering because I assume things underground are always in flux--changing. So if stability has changed since the last nuclear test, could a smaller detonation have enough impact to start of some little chain reaction of some sort? And can scientists predict the outcome of this detonation when they don't understand these mysterious rumblings noted in the other thread?

AC 15610, you apparently agree with me that this test is actually of a droppable nuclear weapon. Your definitions of 'strake' and 'canard' are aeronautical, and make very clear that they cannot possibly apply to a 700-ton bomb that is too heavy to be lifted by any airplane in the world.

Because every country with a satellite in space would be able to tell if it was a nuke...

duh...

>>>" So if stability has changed since the last nuclear test, could a smaller detonation have enough impact to start of some little chain reaction of some sort?"<<<

This detonation is on the surface...I have no idea why you are worried about it doing anything to any fault line...It is a .6kt equivalent explosion...Mount St Helens was estimated to have been 350 Megatons TNT equivalent...

AC 84350, you apparently don't understand the point of a nuclear bunker buster. It is supposed to detonate entirely underground. If it works correctly, then, its detonation will have NO characteristic flash observable from space. Besides, as I pointed out, we have already seen from 9/11 that no country in the world is brave enough to expose American lies.

Once again I must ask, Why does anyone believe that our military would want to test a mythical 700-ton bomb that cannot possibly be carried by any airplane in the world? Do you believe that the military will ROLL the bomb all the way from a Western state to Iran, perhaps across the Bering Strait?

Polly... Keep up the good fight

Divine Strake...

interesting name so as to conjure of the vision of the Almighty wreaking havoc. Dubya must have thought up that name to appease the Mormons in Utah and Nevada (his base) that will probably be radiated from the test. But, it's ok... Armageddon is coming soon anyway :-))

Randi Rhodes of Air America radio was on Lou Dobbs last week protesting this test. She got quite the air time. She is great to listen to streaming audio on AAR... Here is the link. She is on from 3-6 EST. She really gives it to Bush... She is hilarious

This thing has already been solved. They are doing this as a proxy test for a 1kt nuclear bunker buster without violating the nuclear test ban.

they have the 1kt nuke bunker busters ready to go. They are proxy testing with a .7kt conventional load to verify calculations of penetration into bedrock. (no plane can come close to carrying a 700 ton load).
