Drought shrinking cattle herds June 18, 2013 By Jenna Zamie QCS photo: Steven Hansen Cattle graze on ranch land south of Tucumcari. County herds have been cut by a third. By Steve Hansen QCS Managing editor Between 2009 and the first quarter of 2013, Quay County ranches have reduced their cattle herds by more than one third, according to the Quay County Assessor’s office. County Assessor Janie Hoffman said the current drought has caused steep drops in the size of local ranch herds. From the 2009 level of 46,844 head, the first-quarter 2013 cattle count has shrunk to a little more than 31,132 head-a drop of 33.5 percent. About two-thirds of that reduction occurred between 2012 and the first quarter of 2013. The decline totaled 8,403 head, or 21 percent, from the 2012 level to 2013′s first-quarter reading. Seems like I remember that there was some concern that a spark or lightning could actually cause an explosion, and it was just before hurricane season where it would carry the methane right up the East Coast. 5 Stars and thanks for this - I wish all of the "climate-tards" could get it through their heads about methane being 100 TIMES as climate-affecting as carbon dioxide could EVER be. Weird Weather (OP) User ID: 41933856 United States 06/19/2013 12:13 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Thanks, everyone! Good to see GLP'ers have their thinking caps on. FWIW, I got my crash course in managing a group from GLP, the link in my sig is to my FB group. I cover ABSOLUTELY breaking weather and climate news, space anomalies, meteor sightings, animal and marine die-ffs (google hypoxia...and it ties in to methane) and a lot more. I do my best to provide charts and maps, explanations and education links, and rely on actual meteorologists and climatologists for up to date reports and info. Thanks to GLP I also learned how to spot trolls and shills, they are instabanned in my group. Also thanks to GLP, i learned which sources are reliable and which are not: i never post Daily Mail, Dutchsinse, SO, Huffpo...doomporn. What I do post are the FACTS. And the facts are FAR more chilling than sensationalized 'what if' scenarios. I will say, I think the gov buying ammo in such massive amounts is related to what is happening to our climate, and the crop damages (seriously underplayed by main stream farm report groups, but the info is there if you look past the smoke and mirrors) on top of the devastating weather extremes tells me that our gov is QUITE concerned about civil unrest. I created the group to inform. I'm not trolling for members, we have a lot (including quite a few meteos and climate scientists who are accessible and open to questions). But you are welcome to check it out and keep up to date. Weird Weather [link to www.facebook.com (secure)] |
Weird Weather (OP) User ID: 41933856 United States 06/19/2013 12:16 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | [link to www.killerinourmidst.com] If a methane catastrophe were to happen in the near future, it is likely that not only would a considerable percentage of existing plants and animals be killed off, but a large percentage of the human population as well, as a result of the climate change and significantly more hostile environmental conditions. Yet we may well be heading toward such a catastrophe, produced by our warming of the planet. Just how rapidly seafloor methane will be released depends on numerous factors that are quite difficult to assess. It is possible that seafloor methane will be released so slowly that it will only have a relatively minor warming effect on Earth's climate. On the other hand, because the coming methane release will be the result of our warming of the planet via the burning of fossil and other acrbon fuels, it could happen much more quickly. Indeed, it seems that we are currently pumping the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide into the atmosphere at a much faster -- perhaps tens to hundreds of times faster -- rate than has ever before naturally occurred in the last half billion years or so of the Earth's history. The catastrophic warming we are causing is -- to the best of our knowledge -- unprecedented since the early days of our planet, billions of years ago. Such warming could well lead to methane catastrophe. The onset of a methane catastrophe would be abrupt because it could be initiated by a major submarine landslide, which can happen in a matter of days or even hours, or by the venting of vast quantities of seafloor methane over a period of decades. These events can take place in what is essentially a geological eyeblink. Additional slumping and/or venting can continue for centuries to millennia. Peak levels of over 2000 ppb over Antarctica have been recorded repeatedly over the past few months, which is extraordinary, the more so since the photochemical sink for methane is typically strongest during summer, while average levels of methane over Antarctica have historically been the lowest on Earth (image 2. below). What has happened in the Arctic Sea this year has been, well, BAD doesn't begin to cover it. RIGHT NOW the whole damn thing is melting...again, i point you to this map: [link to www7320.nrlssc.navy.mil] And some good blogs here: [link to theweathercentre.blogspot.com] Andrew was one of the first to do fully cohesive research on the SSW/Polar Vortex collapse last autumn. Check the Winter Weather Wall. [link to neven1.typepad.com] Neven is also stellar, here is his latest on the anomalous cyclonic activity at the Arctic, which is a huge contributor to the Arctic Melt. Also, sea ice melts from below (case in point: Antarctica), so here the phrase 'As above, so below,' is highly appropriate...this brings us to the jet stream and thermohaline circulation. Basically, as the seas have warmed, the jet stream has re-adjusted...have you seen the charts for the jet stream? Ouch.
