Re: Grizzley Bear Climbs tree To Get Hunter.
Killing for sport has always baffled me.

For instance, let's say you go to Alaska to hunt an animal. You track it, camp out, plot their most likely route, attempt to intercept it along its route, coordinate your plans based on wind, temperature, rain, etc., learn to examine its scat, recognize its lay spots, etc. It's basically mountaineering, orienteering, mixed with basic zoology. But once you find the animal, why the desire to KILL it? And make no mistake, hunting is killing for sport. People talk about, "I eat the meat!". But you don't have to. You're not hunting to eat the meat. You're hunting for the "thrill" of killing the animal. You know this in your heart. Why can't you do all of the above, EXCEPT the killing of the animal at the end? Instead of shooting the animal with a gun, why not shoot it with a camera? After tracking the animal by using your knowledge of the above skills, why not take some awesome photographs of some animals that most people will never have the opportunity in their lives to see? Let the animals be. They have enough to cope with and worry about every day without a person hunting it for sport.

Not meant to attack anyone. Just, hopefully, food for thought.
 Quoting: John Kocktosen

Don't back down.
You were clearly attacking sport hunting
and food hunting.

I detest sport hunting.
I find it absolutely barbaric.
Many, however hunt for sustenance.

I know many families that rely on deer meat as their primary meat throughout the year.
Not because they want to, but because they are poor and cannot buy commercially raised animal flesh.

Ever hit a deer doing 70mph?

I'm OK with the way our deer population
is managed here in Wisconsin.

A black bear.. around 250-300 lbs. doesn't seem like much compared to a grizz or polar bear.. 1200+lbs.

Has the same kind of teeth and claws.. just smaller.
Brute animal strength to go with it.
Teeth, bone and claws.

A not so smart buddy of mine thought it would be a gas to jump on a deer's back one day while bowhunting from a tree.

A small doe.. 60 lbs. or so came under his stand and he tried to ride her.
He told me he knew as soon as he hit her back and felt her stiffen and bow up.... big mistake.
She like to have killed him with her hooves before he finally got away from her.

Unless a black bear is starving or you pose a threat to a female's cubs, they won't generally tangle with humans. It would be interesting to know exactly where this footage was taken in respect to nearby populations. They're seen pretty frequently dumpster diving in small resort areas in Colorado, and if you leave them alone, they leave you alone. We used to camp at a place called Wellington Lake outside of Bailey, and the lady there would tell us if we see the bear, just ignore it.

He did the right thing, you would have done the wrong thing. I faced off against a black bear out in the open, he even did a feint charge to see if I'd run (that would have classified me as food). No doubt it'll get your heart pumping, but at the end of the day... black bears eat garbage, and fish, and berries and stuff. No animal wants to fight for it's food if it can avoid it. Injuries sustained in fighting another animal is altogether too risky. Lions have it rough in that regard, as do the starving wolves who go after deer and other hard kicking hooved animals (most eat primarily mice) it's why they hunt in packs.

The proper way to deal with an animal is calmly showing it you aren't a threat,, or convincing it you ARE a threat if they are about to attack.

Anyway. Good vids.

The bear did the wrong thing.
The moment he starts coming up the ladder, is the moment he dies.
I don't play around with the little fuzzy bears if they are in my space.

Any bear that approaches a man is a danger.
That means he doesn't have any fear of man.
Whatever the reason, eating garbage, fed by humans, starving, aggressive..
it's not normal behavior for a bear in the wild to approach humans.

You can say anything you want, but I grew up in black bear and wolf country.
You can't tell me anything I don't already know.

In both videos, I do not think either bear had any idea there was a human in the stand until they got up there. Blacks in the wild, the ones not fed and used to humans, will hide or run unless a baby is in danger. A statistic about black bears says:

"Since 1900, there have been only 45-recorded deaths that were caused by black bears in the North America. "

You think those bears didn't smell the person long before he got there..?
You don't know much about bears.

You are correct about wild bears... in remote areas... with very little human interaction. They retain a natural fear.
They will try to avoid you.

There are also rogue bears to consider.
A bear, hungry from a bad tooth or injury, unable to feed normally, is a fiercesome creature. He will go for an easy meal.. a human.

Bears fresh from hibernation, hungry.. watch out for them.

Any feeding bear.. look out.

There are many more cases of attacks than fatalities.
Any single encounter could be fatal.
