He did the right thing, you would have done the wrong thing. I faced off against a black bear out in the open, he even did a feint charge to see if I'd run (that would have classified me as food). No doubt it'll get your heart pumping, but at the end of the day... black bears eat garbage, and fish, and berries and stuff.

The proper way to deal with an animal is calmly showing it you aren't a threat,, or convincing it you ARE a threat if they are about to attack.

Anyway. Good vids.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 24866361

The bear did the wrong thing.
The moment he starts coming up the ladder, is the moment he dies.
I don't play around with the little fuzzy bears if they are in my space.

Any bear that approaches a man is a danger.
That means he doesn't have any fear of man.
Whatever the reason, eating garbage, fed by humans, starving, aggressive..
it's not normal behavior for a bear in the wild to approach humans.

You can say anything you want, but I grew up in black bear and wolf country.
You can't tell me anything I don't already know.

In both videos, I do not think either bear had any idea there was a human in the stand until they got up there. Blacks in the wild, the ones not fed and used to humans, will hide or run unless a baby is in danger. A statistic about black bears says:

"Since 1900, there have been only 45-recorded deaths that were caused by black bears in the North America. "

You think those bears didn't smell the person long before he got there..?
You don't know much about bears.

You are correct about wild bears... in remote areas... with very little human interaction. They retain a natural fear.
They will try to avoid you.

There are also rogue bears to consider.
A bear, hungry from a bad tooth or injury, unable to feed normally, is a fiercesome creature. He will go for an easy meal.. a human.

Bears fresh from hibernation, hungry.. watch out for them.

Any feeding bear.. look out.

There are many more cases of attacks than fatalities.
Any single encounter could be fatal.

aw, black bears are so cute.I don't think the bear expected a man to be up there.
i agree with the person who said the bear wanted the snacks the hunter might tend to leave in his tree stand.

i don't know that people shoot black bears, ever. they're cute.
I wouldn't recommend bothering them, but they keep to themselves. like this one saw a man there and just left. if he'd wanted the man gone, he could've pushed him off the tree stand.

a friend of mine encountered a black bear that wandered into a populated area. the park rangers just herded the bear back into the woods. the bear was just lost.

I have a mounted over 500 lb black bear about 6 feet from me (was 8 feet tall) and another one (cinnamon) 200 lber about 10 feet from me, that was a little black bear, nothing like a grizzley, you moran.

Don't get mad because you are a pussy.

And yes, I ate them both.

I see black bear in the woods quite a bit, they will only attack if you get between them and their cubs. I would not have shot at it either. The guy in the stand was probably strapped to the tree, if it tried to bite him, he could have kicked the thing off.

The humans were up in trees, not exactly in the path of a prevailing ground breeze for the bear, and also many hunters use scent block while hunting, sold in any sport shop.

Is it true that a bear's sense of smell is 7 times greater than that of a bloodhound?
Indeed it is. There is perhaps no other animal with a keener sense of smell. Bears rely on their sense of smell to locate mates, detect and avoid danger in the form of other bears and humans, identify cubs, and FIND FOOD. Although the region of the brain devoted to the sense of smell is average in size, the area of nasal mucous membrane in a bear's head is one hundred times larger than in a human's. This gives a bear a sense of smell that is 7 times greater than a bloodhound's. In addition, they have an organ called a Jacobson's organ, in the roof of the mouth, that further enhances their sense of smell.
Here are some accounts of how truly well a bear can smell:

"A black bear in California was once seen to travel upwind three miles in a straight line to
reach the carcass of a dead deer."

". . . male polar bears march in a straight line, over the tops of pressure ridges of uplifted ice . . .
up to 40 miles to reach a prey animal they have detected."

"A bear has been known to detect a human scent more than fourteen hours after the person passed along the trail."

"A male can detect which way a breeding female is traveling just by sniffing her tracks."

In these videos, the bears looked surprised to find the humans. They did not look to me as though they were climbing BECAUSE they smelled a human. Perhaps they smelled the lunch bucket moreso than the man? At any rate, neither of these videos convinces me those bears knew a man was up there. The second video looks like there may have been some sort of automatic corn dispenser placed behind the upper rungs of that ladder.

You people are missing the fact that the bears depicted have lost their fear of humans.

They are used to humans being in the woods.

Tell me.. how does a bear express surprise, anyway..?

Not that I care that much.. but.. the fact is.. if he smelled human scent every day of his life.. he wouldn't be shy about going where he smelled humans.

There could have been human scent all around the stand, from where the dude walked from his truck. Probably pop bottles and trash laying around..
To say the bear was unaware of a human in the vicinity is asinine.

That bear was merely curious. Their behaviors and mannerisms are very similar to dogs (both wild and domesticated).

He was looking to see if there was food left over, and realized there was a human there, then kinda went, oh, ok, I'll just go now.

The cameraman wasnt too scared, as he would have a lethal weapon as his disposal.

the black bear was just being friendly but did you see the look it gave that hunter,(at 0:57) once it realized what he was doing there? It was a kind of 'you're crazy' look.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 41217722

ohyeah The look on the bear's face was fucking priceless... he looked at the guy like "This is awkward" before he got back down. I had to have watched this video at least 5 times just to see the bear's expression.
