I'm pretty sure then, that the beam will still burn that section making it impossible to place another 9nanometer spot close enough to the first one to make it mean anything. Maybe I'm wrong but it seems you still need a precise round dot of light to make the correcgt transition to a 1,000 terabyte dvd. |

Eventually you'll be able to store the entire makeup of a human being on a disc or simply transmit the information and recreate them on other planets using the blueprints and chemical composition. Like a recipe card. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 41972701 United Kingdom 06/20/2013 11:16 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | A little known fact... YEARS ago, the electronics company "Phillips" who invented the CD made a prototype of a new format that used "wave division multiplexing". In short a full-spectrum laser (not red or blue or green) with 16.8 million colours was used, that could read data from a disc, using multi layers read via every "colour". So in essence it would turn a 9GB disc into a 9 x 16.8 million GB disc. Or 15200000 GB disc. The Technology was shown working to trade insiders (myself being one of them) and then.... It just disappeared, never to be heard of again.. Some colleagues speculated that Government or Military wanted the tech and approached Phillips. Not for the consumer market. This was back in 1995. |

It almost makes me think even more about the theoretical possibility that we are all just "living" inside a huge VR machine! <---OK maybe not so huge, but still. |

Actually the multiplexed version was owned by Tandy and still is and they never did sign a deal to get it go commercial. I got to see it too but Tandy had it working well before CDs came to be. Phillips actually made their CD spec lower than we all fought for so they could incrementally "improve" their products and Sony fell in lock step after their Beta max disaster. |
