Absolutely true! I have been researching Ecuador for a year or so. The people are friendly to Americans, the currency used is the US dollar. The cost of living is extremely low and the healthcare there is cheap and outstanding!

It's true. Many doctors are educated in Cuba and engineers in Russia. They have agreements with these countries that allow a significant number of scholarships to offer people who would normally not have these opportunities. Education in Cuba is top-notch, not to mention Russia.

Umm, Sorry to burst your bubble.... I LIVE in Ecuador,it is a beautiful country, but not awesome, pollution is terrible, with high crime in the cities, but foreigners do not know this because they DON'T REPORT IT- and if the theft is for less than $599 US, they do NOT arrest the felon- no jail time! People that murder only spend 7 years in jail if convicted of the murder, if you can pay off a Judge, no jail, no conviction! Guns are outlawed, so only the robbers have guns. Bandits go into restaurants and rob EVERYBODY's phones, cash jewelry, etc. Cops in the cities pull over Buses, and trucks, and Gringos to get lunch money.....people are generally friendly to Americans, but anti-American sentiment is growing. Cost of living is lower than the US, having an average income of $350 per month, some people live cheaply, but Americans are going to need $1500-$2000 a month minimum to live comfortably. Cuenca is nice, but home-invasion robberies on the rise. It is still 3rd world.....

I LOVE it when someone that lives in one of these areas tell us how it really is! We tend to get the grandiose visions of how great it must be in these other lands/countries and that it has to be better than where we are sitting or living. The grass is not always greener folks. Where I live in New Mexico is almost like a third world country. We talk about it a lot here. 75% of the people in this area are hispanic. The majority are illegal immigrants. They are also prejudiced. Seeing a blonde is such a rarity that when I walk into stores little children stare at me. LOL.

Home invasions have tripled here. The healthcare in my area is basically "triage." Of course, we do have guns legally here.

Muggings and pick pocketing are common. Don’t wear expensive jewellery when walking around and watch your bags on public transport. Wear your rucksack on the front of your body. Where possible, don’t store anything under your seat or in the overhead storage. Keep your passport and money on you at all times. Take care of your belongings in restaurants or cafes and watch out for thieves. Criminals sometimes squirt liquids (ketchup, mustard, water, etc.) on you and then steal your bag while ‘helping’ to clean you up. Other methods of distraction include requests for assistance, staged fights and pushing or shoving. Don’t resist a robbery.

Take care when withdrawing money from a bank or at an ATM. The authorities suspect that gang members inside banks inform others.

Ecuador is fine if people know what they are getting into BEFORE they come. Research, ask questions and then take precautions. We took some well-meaning friends advice, and in the 1st 6 months living here, got robbed and shot at. ( they missed ) If you are vigilant, you will do better, if you can buy our own car and maintain it, you will be safer than taking public transport. I know MANY that have been robbed at gunpoint and knife point, and know 2 people that have been kidnapped for the "express robbery." I also have a friend that got scoped. (scopalamine robbery) I also personally know people who have been burglarized, beat and tied up while the punks went through their house. Now that I "know the ropes" We don't have any problems, and plan on staying here.
