Re: BREAKING - Explosion Grain Silo/Plant - Union Mills Indiana
Full release from LaPorte County Sheriff's Office:

At 1:29 pm (CST) the La Porte County Regional 911 Dispatch Center received a number of 911 calls reporting an explosion at the Union Mills Co-Op, which is located at 3551 West 800 South in Union Mills.

Deputies from the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office, La Porte County Emergency Medical Service and Noble Township Fire Department were dispatched to the scene and upon arrival, the scene was quickly assessed and it was confirmed that one (1) person was deceased as a result of the explosion. All other employees were accounted for and no other injuries were reported.

It was also confirmed that the explosion occurred and limited to a concrete grain silo that is adjacent to a railroad spur on the grounds of the Co-Op. No hazardous chemicals were involved or released as a result of the explosion and it is not believed that a fire was involved. The cause of the explosion is not yet known and it was believed that the victim, who is a Co-Op employee, was working in the silo at the time of the explosion.

Emergency responders and investigators remain on scene and as additional information is learned it will be made available.

So what are our possibilities?

We know from the okc bombing that fertilizer makes a hell of a bomb. Are they trying to head off people who would use this fertilizer for a copycat incident or are fertilizer plants just a convenient thing to blow up because of low security and the size of the explosion.

Is it supposed to hurt our food production? Did these producers not agree to change something in the mix under the table or maybe that is what they were doing and this was retaliation?

Do all of these fertilizer producers have anything in common? sure would be nice to have real investigative reporters to answer some of these questions.

They can blow up strategic targets all they want.

But all it is gonna take is one good software hacker/emp to make most of their heavy equipment into paperweights.

Then shit will be messy for both sides.

I remember in the mid 90s when a battleship with windows nt computers crashed for a couple days, they couldn't even move the ship let alone shoot the main guns. They were sitting dead in the water.

That was 20 years ago, how dependent do you think they are on computers now. All it's gonna take is some 16 year old computer genius to program a virus to bring it all down.

Or someone to create an emp device and use it near the main AFBs. Everyone knows that controlled airspace is the first step toward defeating your enemy on the ground.

What I'm saying is don't underestimate human ingenuity, the smartest people usually don't get involved in war until they are painted into a corner. Then they are your worst enemy.

Also don't underestimate the private sector and other countries. There a lot of self made billionaires and countries that would likely side with the opposition creating war capital very quickly.

Think about how the US supplies other countries rebels with supplies during civil wars, now imagine our enemies will do the same, so the one sidedness of the fight would end quickly as they would have a fight on multiple fronts.

Again then it's gonna get messy quickly because they are going to want to crush the opposition before they get financial and equipment support.

They are smart to prepare by doing this, but in the end they will lose because good always prevails, it sometimes just takes awhile and a bit of suffering to get people motivated to fight for a cause.

There is a suggestion (merely a SUGGESTION, mind you) that since this fertilizer is obviously explosive, that the Gubb'mint is "sponsoring" these explosions,to keep this substance out of the hands of patriots fighting back against them and their policies. This is the 3rd or 4th in 2 months - very interesting......

No, there doesn't need to be explosives in a grain bin for it to explode. Grain can and does combust on it's own. It happens in the summer when the humidity, or lack of it, is just right. It's a known hazard of working at a grain elevator.

[link to en.wikipedia.org]

This isn't the best article about the causes of grain explosions, most of the others are pretty technical. If you want to read more, just search on grain elevator explosions.

I don't know if there is any way to stop it. Every tiny town in the Midwest has a grain elevator or multiple ones in their towns though. I imagine something to prevent it may not be cost feasible for most of these places. I don't know a lot about the components that make this happen but grain elevators exploding during harvest time is an annual occurance.

I don't think there is yet, either. I know the industry has been working on it for years, but so far, nothing works completely. It IS better than it used to be, but they haven't found a way to control conditions. The elevators are massive and outdoors. Too many variables.

ok i understand it. The grain or flour creates a miniscule sized dust that perpetually hangs in the air constantly. If this dust is ignited somehow it spreads through the bin igniting all the dust in the air. Now all the energy from the flash fire has no where to go inside this thick concrete structure and essentially turns it into a giant pipe bomb or an overloaded pressure cooker with no release valve.

They try to control this by keeping rocks or metal out of the grain before it is put onto the bin so there is nothing that can inadvertently cause a spark to ignite this flammable dust.

Now the question is how hard would it be create this scenario artificially.

grain elevators are relatively prone to explosion. All of the dust created and the static electricity from the friction creates an explosive atmosphere.

When i was a kid the grain elevator exploded on the farm I was working on. Not really a big deal, but it moved the pole barn over a few inches.

the "dust" from a grain bin can be quite explosive - it's almost lighter than air and very dry. Thought I read a few posts up that the fert. plant and the grain bin were side by side. Not real smart in the real estate department!
