Not only me but my relatives noticed that as well;
there´s many more ant hills than ever in the gardens, streets, lawn..

ants are more aggressive as well;
they are literarily jumping on you, either from the ground or from shallow trees here.

public children playgrounds had to be closed down to get rid of all the ants building their nests in there in my town in Southern Germany, too.

had the car broken down in April and had to wait on the sidestrip on the street, until the tow-away-car came.
when it arrived and me and that guy left our vehicles, we both were full of ants in less than 2 minutes;
i am not kidding you, it were easily 30 to 40 ants on each of us ! we had a hard time kicking them off us vice versa and getting my car towed to leave that place.

Here in usa, the ants are either searching for drier areas or water..

California is unusually hot this year while the midwest is getting hit with hail and tornadoes

that makes sense for your area..

but here, they have been this way since the snow melted away;
it is not too dry, not too wet, not too hot and so on,
it is just the ants being not right this year;
don´t know how to say it, it is like they are taking over and ants will reign here now.

some of them you don´t notice at first, but when lying in bed in the evening, you feel something..and then you have to kick them off your head, where they managed to hide all day and just seem to become active and run around in the evening.
it sounds gross and it is;
i am living in a high appartment complex in the city so everything is paved here, don´t know where i got the ants on me - and i had this happening already twice (never before)..
