GLP Advice: I have debt & I can't take it anymore.
I have $24,000 in debt, and am earning only $1800-2000/month.

The debt was quite a bit more, but I have been working it down for the past year or so.

My hours are getting reduced at work, added with increasing living costs and I feel like I'm the US facing their debt crisis.

I have basically do not spent any money on wants. I stay home and don't go out, eat out, or on vacation.

I really can't take it anymore, I have been looking for a new job, a 2nd job, but there just isn't any jobs available where I live and moving isn't an option unless its a guaranteed job.

The only major asset I own is my car which I pretty much need to get around.

What can/should I do?

I have never asked a public forum for help but GLP seems to have more people with my mindset so their advice could either be very good or very bad.

I thought Canada had a massive social net to avoid stuff like the problem you are experiencing?

You can try the Dave Ramsey method of getting debt free. It works for a lot of people. Google him.

In the USA you'd qualify for chapter 7 bankruptcy. In Canada, I can't say. Bankruptcy is about being able to get on with your life without wasting it all dealing with former debt. You can only do it once every 10 years here.

YMMV. Good luck. Ignore whatever comments Brief might leave.

Re: GLP Advice: I have debt & I can't take it anymore.
i'll bet Brief might have some good tips.

I do not know Canada's rules, but sometimes debt can be paid back dime on the dollar if you offer a lump sum.

The "lump" does not have to be half of it, or a quarter, just a nice sum that you can give, and say: can we consider it even, now?

Guess it depends on what type of debt and creditor.

Good luck.

I don't think paying it off is wimpy. Running is.

Re: GLP Advice: I have debt & I can't take it anymore.
The reason for bankruptcy is when there's no forseeable way of getting out of legitimate debt in 5-10 years, or such that you can get to a reasonable lifestyle. Not great, but reasonable.

Otherwise, you waste your life and the creditor still doesn't get much. It's about a reasonable second chance.

That's why you can't just keep doing it - only every 10 years or so.

Well, most people don't WANT to do it. But sometimes there is no choice when the amount of debt exceeds what you can possibly earn for many years.

I was $70,000 in debt and there was no way I could pay it back. I declared chapter 7 bankruptcy and am now debt free. I cannot get a loan in 10 years, but I can say that has taken a load off my shoulders. I am debt free and proud of it.

Bankruptcy is your best choice. Of course we don't know all your details, but given that the banks have screwed us over and over...........take your pound of flesh. You can get credit cards and auto loans easily after a BK. After two years, its as if you never got dinged on your credit. Screw the banks, get your revenge. Yeah, I'm bitter against the big banks that still owe the government big bucks, but they will never repay.

The banks are the ones that have screwed us over. The banks got bailed out and we didn't get nothing.

Screw the banks, declare bankruptcy and get your life back.
