Exactly. I grew up in NJ in a white town. We watched a video about discrimination in health class in 5th grade. Our teacher said that a bad word would be used but to just be mature about it. After the movie we were all trying to figure out what the word was. The only kid who knew was a new kid from New Orleans. None of us had ever even heard it before!

When people like Don Lemon have a language professor on talking about how Jeantel was incredibly articulate and was speaking "black english," which is "like a unique language," its become some sort of joke. Do people realize how racist it is to excuse it as "black english?" She's not a bad person because shes inarticulate. She's not necessarily even stupid. But she is INARTICULATE, and when an entire subculture of a specific race in this country is inarticulate, that is a problem that needs to be addressed. That may be part of the reason why unemployment is so high black communities! Bill Cosby has talked about this, and it was a breath of fresh air to many people, because it was something only a black person could get away with saying, but unfortunately the black community as a whole wanted to hear none of it.

The N word wasn't something I was raised with. I'm over 40. I've heard Whoopie and others defending their rights to use the word as an empowerment tool. If she and others could open their minds a little to the problem with her statement I think she would understand. Think about it this, whites used the word for generations and for that time it wasn't even considered a bad word. Blacks got their rights and this word was thrown out if you were to be a "good" person. White people ADJUSTED, it's been decades. There are more white youth today who don't even see skin color when they play basketball with their black friends. As they get older and are exposed to rap music how is it ever going to be reconciled that it's okay for blacks to say it but not for the white kid to say it? Just rapping along or in general use. Blacks are now actually teaching white youth about racism and not in a historical sense, they are teaching in-equality and double standards which will lead to resentments down the line and heaven forbid white kid moves to a new school and says the word (if his former black friends were okay with it).

It's time. If whites can't say it, neither should blacks. It's not about WHY it is or isn't okay, it's about everyone's future. If blacks can't understand that they should refrain and refuse to listen to it from their entertainers and friends,then they are no better than the KKK. It's time to move on and seperate yourselves from those who keep this monster going.

I grew up in the south and everyone I knew used the N word and NEVER did they mean it in a malicious or derogatory manner. It was just a variant of the word negro and used to make a point that the person they had talked to or met was black. Why they had to differentiate between black and white, I don't know, but they didn't have any malice in using that word.

the n word is a really old insult. I wish it had not been "reclaimed" by rap because I don't think any black person likes it. they play it off like it's funny (I mean when a black person says it), but I think they'd be happier never to hear it.

I must have grown up in a genteel part of the south because no one in my family went around saying the n word all the time. neither did my friends' family. and we were here before our state was even named, so we're about as southern as can be.
