Seeking Check Cashing Advice.
Thanks for reading.

I just received a lump sum payment as a cashout for a cash balance retirement plan from my previous employer. I received this in the form of a check.

Due to past bad financial decissions, getting a checking account at a major bank is impossible for me. There is one bank in my area that offers second-chance checking accounts. However, I know if I open an account with that check, that because I am a new customer, and because of the amount of the check (over 5K dollars) there will be a 10 busniss day hold on funds.

The bank the check is drawn on is a Trust company (www.statestreet.com) That does not do retail banking. So there is no local branch I can walk into and ask them to cash the check for me.

I also live in a rural area in New York State where options are limited.

I'm looking for any suggestions anyone might have who has been in this situation, on how I might get that cash checked without having to open an account and wait 10 or more days on a funds hold

Thank you for any advice.

Do have a drivers license? If so any Walmart that has a money center inside should be able to cash it. I know the one closest to me does for a $3 fee.

Walmart does not cash checks in NY. Also, they have a limit on the dollar value of the check they will cash. I looked into that already. but thanks

I'd wait. Anyone who cashes them fast, charges a higher fee.

I've been broke for quite a while, so prob won't make a difference if i wait another two weeks to get money. Though if there were a quicker option that wouldn't cost me an arm a leg and a kidney, I'd take it

You don't have a friend or know someone that has a checking account?

If so, go with them to their bank, sign the check over to them, they cash it, you get cash in hand and give them $50.00 for their trouble.

The bank the check is drawn from has to cash it....PERIOD. Do not let them bullshit you. I have forced them to cash such checks on several occasions. Go right to the manager and get your money that is yours, provided the money is there. I have even taken checks to banks that did not have my name on it as "payee", just the word cash and forced them to honor it. Banks do not own your money and have no right telling you differently.

Yeah I see your point, why don't you try calling them and see if they can arrange for a local bank to cash your check, tell them you cant read or write or are blind or something and cannot open a regular account at a bank.

Good Luck and hope you figure something out.

They took the check after I jumped through their hoops. It was unbelievable. My 14 year old daughter is also on the account. They made her sign about 15 papers from DHS. I was dumbfounded. I was told it was the size of the check that caused the hoopla.

And this was just a DEPOSIT!!!!

I don't know of any bank that wouldn't put a hold on the funds. I think your best advice would be to get a friend to cash it for you, but if they don't have that much in their account, it would be held in their account instead, AFAIK. It looks like you will probably have to wait till the deposit clears...but that's a good bit of money to help you over the hump!

Depending on where you live, you may try a check cash service company.

A check cashing service is a company that will cash a check for a fee. Banks also cash checks, and some do so at no cost to the consumer, especially if he or she has an account at the bank or uses direct deposit. Many people, particularly those without bank accounts, use check cashing services instead.

These companies often also double as short-term loan facilities, offering money in advance of a paycheck in exchange for a percentage of the value of the check.

If you open a new checking account with that check, sometimes they release some of the funds immediately and place the rest on hold til it clears.

If its a payroll check, they cannot place a hold on those funds, although you may have a problem opening an account in that case. Good luck.
