Re: New Study Suggests That 60 Billion(!) Alien Planets Could Support Life
Consider:

- New evidence suggests that carbon-based DNA (OUR DNA) actually dates back to over 8 billion years old.
- The Earth is only around 4.7 billion years old.
- Science's general consensus is that the first unicellular prokaryotic carbon-based forms got to this planet by way of space travel (whether that be planet hopping on asteroids, space floating like "water bears," or wormholes

All this information leads us to several close-to-certain conclusions:

1. Our predecessors almost DEFINITELY did NOT start on Earth
2. The prokaryotic carbon-based cells are suited for space travel
3. They either happened randomly upon this planet or we were "seeded"

With these safe assumptions, it is logical to assume that these prokaryotic cells are and have been (FOR A LONG TIME) floating around space and landing anywhere that is suited to carbon-based evolution. It happened TWICE just on this planet. One evolution chain on the surface, spawning from photosynthetic unicellular life and one at the bottom of the oceans, spawned from chemosynthetic unicellular things.

It is likely that (and this is excluding all the other potential unknown types of life out there, not to mention things that may exist outside of this dimensional plane) there are literally BILLIONS of planets out there supporting chains of life from the same DNA strands that found their way here. Remember, we're talking about a space that (so far as we know) is infinitely expansive. Of course there are unlimited planets that could support extraterrestrial life. In the end it would only be illogical to assume otherwise.

It life but not as we know it.

What makes people think it is life as WE know it, life could be something completely different, existing in conditions which we wouldn't survive. Yet these conditions are natural just as life on the bottom of the oceans living under pressures which would crush us.

It is fairly ego-centric to believe we are the only life in the universe.
 Quoting: Waterbug

No it isn't. Every known scientific fact tells us life only exists on Earth, and supports the law of biogenesis: that life only comes from other life. It doesn't spontaneously generate all over space like Star Trek pseudo-science would have you believe.

The simple act of a comet impact releasing amino acids is enough for me to determine that.

You of course won't get an answer. Abiogenesis is completely unproven, and the ones leading the anti-religious charge know it. There have been computer simulations of course that supposedly had positive results but its near impossible to get all of the variables right for an accurate simulation.

You will however get a long string of ad hominem attacks and a not even cleverly constructed association fallacy based on aligning even the mere mention of an "intelligent" design with stupidity, mindlessness and emotional neediness. In the end "they" simply want the freedom to be a d-bag without repercussion.

If the conditions for life to exist are present, life will exist. If the conditions for life to exist are not present, life will not exist.

Simple as that.

There is life on Earth because the proper conditions exist. There is no life on the moon because the proper conditions do not exist.

Savvy?

I like the idea of Panspermia although it will be difficult to prove (as of now). It has been shown that life (or the building blocks of life) existed long before Earth. So if those building blocks that exist on an asteroid strike a planet or moon that is newly forming or formed, life will begin in some way.

Understand that everything needed to create life came from the Big Bang, which although we don't fully understand yet, doesn't mean that given enough time we won't. We are infants in scientific knowledge and evolution. I can't even begin to fathom the answers we'll have 5,000 years from now.

You are not special. Humans were probably an accident grown and developed by a huge amount of luck. There are most likely MILLIONS of other civilizations in the universe. And there should be; life is not special. Even if you consider it rare, cosmological rarities and quite common in a universe the size of ours.

But I'll let somebody who knows better than me explain this to you idiots:

Re: New Study Suggests That 60 Billion(!) Alien Planets Could Support Life
Here's your logical proof: The first law of thermodynamics states: "Nothing is destroyed or created, only transferred." This is quite obviously bullshit. Let's use synergistic principles as a starting point.

1. Very simply, the invention of the word, "synergy" is proof that things are being created all the time. Before the concept of synergy there was no concept. One can argue that it was out there and we simply discovered it. That may be true, however, the fact remains that the English word for it, again "synergy" most certainly DID NOT exist before it was invented.

2. Through this same process, the word itself must be a literal NEW thing. Information (so far as we know) must be encoded in electrons. Therefor when a new word is created it encodes in NEW electrons that previously were nonexistent.

3. Through synergistic principles (again), new things are synthesized all the time. I.e. when two organisms engage in sexual intercourse there is a certain probability that from the initial matter involved (sperm and egg) a new organism is created. This process ALWAYS creates more than the sum of the initial parts involved.

These concepts PROVE that actually the first law of thermodynamics is incorrect. We now see that actually "Nothing is destroyed. New things are created all the time." This is going on all over the universe all the time. If it wasn't then none of us (including those arguing that there is no life elsewhere) would ever have been born or could exist to argue now. It comes down to a simple question. Do we represent infinity by 0 or 1? To suggest that infinity is 0 is to suggest that there is and always has been NOTHING. This is quite obviously untrue and goes all the way back to the "I think therefor I am" argument. Whether or not I am real or a figment of your imagination, YOU must exist because if you didn't you would be unable to comprehen yourself.

I win.

You asked for sources that produced results of spontaneous life using the scientific method. I provided a source. here is another one.
[link to www.huffingtonpost.com]

The findings are fascinating, said Ralf Kaiser, a physical chemist who studies astrochemistry at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

"It opens another pathway to explain how these biological, or precursor molecules can be formed," Kaiser, who was not involved in the study, told LiveScience.

The team has shown that such precursor molecules "absolutely could be formed this way, no question," Kaiser said.

But it's not all or nothing: Some molecules could have been carried here by comets from outer space, while some formed on impact, and still others formed completely from home-grown materials. The tricky question is to determine what percentage of life's building blocks arose during each process, Kaiser said.

Of course you'll dismiss this as not proving anything, so I'll ask you for proof of an intelligent designer (which of course you'll not be able to adequately provide) and this back and forth can continue for all eternity. So I'll save us both some time by saying that hard scientific fact backs my argument, while blind illogical faith backs yours, and we will never be able to convince the other one that they are wrong.

Oh, and another thing...

to assume that radio frequencies will be received/transmitted by any other intelligent community is:

a. Egocentric - Another intelligence may receive our transmissions and thus assume we are too under-advanced for contact. Alternately, another civilization MAY NOT AND PROBABLY WOULD NOT HAVE EARS to even recognize these frequencies.

b. Silly - Assuming someone or something did give a shit about or COULD receive our transmissions, why one would assume that in the vast uncharted reaches of space, a civilization would perchance to receive such frequencies is beyond the basic logic of science. Further, the time it would take to receive and the chances of a receiver being in the right place at the right time are ASTRONOMICALLY SMALL. Go look up the "Wow! signal"

This argument has been going on for a long time already.
