"Forty year-old Jeffrey Olson was charged with vandalism for writing with chalk outside of a Bank of America. Despite the fact that the law and facts were against him, the jury refused to find him guilty.

Olson engaged in an anti-bank protest with washable chalk on public property. According to the LA Times, “One slogan said, ‘No thanks, big banks.’ Another, ‘Shame on Bank of America.’ In yet another, the bank was portrayed as an octopus grabbing at cash with its tentacles.”

Jury nullification refers to the jury’s historic power to review both fact and law in any given case, despite anything else a judge might tell them. Thus, even if the letter of the law strikes against a person, the jury in any given case need not find him guilty for various reasons. The reasons should, of course, be very few, but they do exist, and should be taken very seriously. Jury nullification protects us from bad laws, and from exceptional instances in which application of even good laws would have bad or unjust consequences."

Glad to see people using common sense. I cause such a stir when I'm picked for jury duty, as I strongly believe in jury nullification and make it known. For those who have jury duty and want to get out just explain how you strongly believe in nullification. They will most likely send you in your way. Glad to see this guy get off..He faced up to 13 years in jail and $13,000 in fines. And was stuck with both law and fact against him.
