what's the most visually stunning Japanese film?
I like Kagemusha... these pastel colors and slow motion created by Kurasawa, the sun rays amidst the clouds of dust, the horse riders like a swarm of locusts, the war action scenes, the flags....
Ran, of course with all its spilling blood.
But I am just beginning to learn more about their films. Gatz... I prefer the anime rather than the film. Akira was awesome.
Yoyimbo, Seven Samurai... black and white films I have seen. I just saw the trailer of Lady Snowblood and I reckon from where Tarantino borrows some scenes from in his Kill Bill....
I have seen Hollywood films like Black Rain and Yacuza, the first with Michael Douglas and the latter with Robert Mitchum, Rising Sun but I don't wanna focus on them. I have seen movies about geishas... but I don't recall the names.
I am not interested in gore films though so I will watch the ones you recommend but not the terror genre.

For me.. Lady Snowblood.

Thanks for your comments. I really enjoy the Baroque sort of visuals mingled with Samurai feudalism and Ninjas in GOEMON. I think I'm gonna try to buy the DVD if I can get it:

I saw HERO with Jacky Chan, right? I liked the movie but I'm so used to his other roles I had difficulties in accepting him in that character. But that's Chinese movie and Chinese history and there's a huge difference between those cultures in spite of their look to Western eyes. Is that the film you're talking about? The helmets in that movie...ummmfffff

Sorry I confused Jet Li movie with Chan's movie ... anyway both are Chinese, not Japanese. Unless you are talking about other film with the same title which is like Indian Godfather.

Tell me about this movie and Shinobi... ( I love these characters with long white hair).

It's amazing how much American films have been inspired by Japanese and Russian movies. Star Wars, Conan, Lord of the Rings and even the ice battle in King Arthur borrowed from Eisenstein's Aleksander Nevsky (helmets, the emperor, bad guys dressed in white, music) and mixed with Samurai movies. Kurasawa learned a lot from westerns to do his 7 Samurai which later on inspired Russian-Swiss actor Yul Brynner to buy the rights and team up with Siberian actor Charles -Buchinsky- Bronson to play The Magnificent Seven. I mean, everyone wins learning from each other. Japanese and Chinese movies changed the way American films did special FXs with Matrix.

Not bad but SHOGUN with Richard Chamberlain was better. Even the sequence where the white man wears the robe for the first time and gets embarrased realizing he's seen.
