I think I have seen some of this before but wow. I always wonder, why they choose to go there and do it. It gives me mixed emotions that I really cannot explain when I watch this.

I noticed that too. He falls gracefully. It is strange to know that he is falling to his death but thinking of how peaceful he looks as he is falling.

Shit, this is a very violent death. Not painless and peaceful. I once read how grisly and gruesomely the the bodies were smashed and mangled when recovered from the waters beneath the Golden Gate Bridge. The impact is terrific. I don't blame them for wanting to end it but I could not do it that way. I couldn't watch the whole thing.

So Sad - I wonder what could be so bad that it would make you take your life? Sure, I can understand when things get bad - real bad, actually but my heart breaks to think they feel they can no longer contribute to our society. Very very sad to me.

sad. maybe obama should ban the golden gate bridge for killing so many people. oh wait, then he'd have to ban his own city of chicago as a war zone and we'd have to invade.

This really bothers me to see healthy people take such a path. I have MS and a lot of health problems because of it. Why would any healthy person would do this? I can see this if someone like me does it, but not being healthy.

jsut as i read this thread im watching a tony scott movie , hes a director that commited "suicide" by jumping of a bridge!

That was one of the saddest videos I've ever seen. I can't even imagine the anguish those people must have been going through to make them do that. RIP all, I hope you found peace in the end.

Firstly, since I bought the dvd of THE BRIDGE a couple of years ago [and still haven't watched it in it's entirety] I can offer oyu a little insight into this odd "documentary." The filmmakers narrowly avoided prosecution since they had aboslutely no permission/permits to film the around the GGB, and it was only through the use of 24/7 cameras equipped with long-range lenses that they got their footage at all. The SF City Attorney was ROYALLY pissed-off and really wanted them to do some serious jailtime.

When THE BRIDGE was previewed at a festival, outcry was fierce as virtually everyone who saw it considered it exploitative and little more than a snuff film. And, I agree, which is why I haven't watched all of the dvd.

Long before you see any jumpers, the producers take elaborate pains to justify their intrusions in the name of documentation, but it rings hollow every time.

NOW: having lived in SF for ten years, I crossed the GGB twice daily as my job required a N Bay commute. And, yes... I was on the span one afternoon when some desperate soul leaped. It is SOP for all traffic to come to a complete halt until the Coast Guard locates/retrieves the body [or in very RARE instances: a survivor!] luckily, they are very good at their jobs. Another factoid: although jumpers all take the leap from the City-side of the span, the heavy currents at the base of the bridge flow OUT of the Bay and will carry the body out to sea pretty fast... which is why the CG doesn't waste any time.

I remember in the mid-80's, a 16-yr old kid from Marin jumped and survived. His entire ribcage was shattered and he suffered some horrific internal injuries.. but he was alive. BARELY. Drs. claimed the only thing that saved him was his excellent physical condition: he was a highschool football player. About a year after the jumped, and following some heavy-duty rehab [which still wasn't entirely successful], he started making the rounds of Bay area high schools to talk about his own depression and the lesson he had learned the very, very hard way.

Such a heart wrenchingly sad video. I almost regret watching it, as it hits too close to home. I have lost two close family members to suicide and the pain never ends. I too have also struggled with suicidal feelings from time to time throughout my life, but having been touched by two suicides makes it hard to commit one myself. The pain and hopelessness of any suicidal person is equally matched by those that loved them after they die. It is horrible for family and friends who are affected. I know this from both sides. My heart aches for anyone who ends their life by suicide. I pray they all found the peace, love, and acceptance we all require.

This is why here in Australia most high bridges are fitted with high security fences
