The thing that comes to my mind is the threat, which someone may unearth, that muslime terrorists were using Canada as a way to wreak havoc near America's borders.

The border to Canada, and from Canada to the US, was considered very permeable and a good area for planning terrorism.

Tampering?

You would have to be insane to tamper with trains. Railroad people are a close-knit group, generally. I wouldn't look first in their ranks for the tamperer.

I worked for a railroad, one thing is frieght cars do not uncouple themselfs. Someone has to pull the pin. Then to get cars rolling they must bleed the air off so the brakes come loose. Also they had to turn the angle cock that is facing the engine or air would build back up. I do believe someone tampered with the cars, it's happened before over the years, a disgrunted employee or someone who knows alot about the railroad that wants to get back at them..
