World Record for the Youngest Crescent Moon Ever Detected!
I'm wondering if this might piss off some Muslims, seeing as how an infidel detected the crescent moon at the start of "Ramadan" a couple days before Muslims saw it and started their rituals.

Thierry Legault is perhaps the world's foremost satellite astrophotographer, though he's usually focused on spacecraft like ISS, and previously captured some of the best views of the shuttle in orbit ever seen by an observer on the ground. This month, however, he focused on our natural satellite, the moon. He was able to detect and record the crescent at new moon on July 8th, when the moon was only about 0.00000068% full according to my calculations. Quite the amazing accomplishment.

I'm kind of wondering if he deliberately chose this particular month to poke the Muslims (obviously the dynamics of the moon's orbit also played a role, but he could have chosen to do it on any other occasion where the same dynamics were available)... from his page...

this is why since the destruction of the temple in jerusalem, the Jewish calendar is based on mathematical formula established 2,000 years ago and not on observation, until there is a system in place to properly observe and report on the new crescents

the new month of av, which began with the crescent this week, began on sunday night, according to the system established by hillel in 200 CE

When the moon is only some four degrees from the sun you must be very careful to not accidentally point it at the sun and you must take precautions to block out stray light from the sun. That is why he made a mask to block out stray light and erected it on a ladder in front of the telescope, knowing exactly where the hole would have to be to allow the moon to be seen through it in the telescope. He also imaged in near infrared to further reduce the amount of skyglow. This was an incredibly thin and dim crescent very near the sun, no one has ever seen a moon this young before. Your calibration frames need to be perfect and your imaging equipment must have a very good signal to noise ratio.

Common as opposed to uncommon?

It is dated from the birth of Christ, and so it is properly BC.

Do you know any historical event or person named "common?"

There isn't one.

What? If Chandler wobble were significant enough to matter, then how did he perform a perfect GOTO to a ~0.00000068% full crescent sliver that he could only detect once the telescope had slewed to it? How did he know how to position that mask in front of the telescope properly?
