Comet's break-up has scientists ringside for show of a lifetime
Email Print Normal font Large font By Richard Macey
May 1, 2006

THEY stretch across the heavens like pearls on an invisible string, and they are coming our way.

Amazed astronomers have been watching as a comet, bound for the inner solar system, has broken into at least 44 pieces.

On May 12 fragments of Schwassmann-Wachmann 3 will sweep within 12 million kilometres of Earth.

"That's pretty close for a comet," said Nick Lomb, the astronomer at the Powerhouse Museum's Sydney Observatory.

[snip snip]

Paul Francis, a comet specialist at Canberra's Mount Stromlo Observatory, said landing on a comet would be like walking on polystyrene. Schwassmann-Wachmann 3's fragments "are spread over about 6 million kilometres … The tails of the bigger fragment extend around 2 million kilometres."

Originally about two kilometres wide, its biggest part is now one kilometre wide. Dr Lomb said the best view of the comet's fragments, visible with binoculars, would be before dawn on May 11.

I find it interesting that the tail stretches 2 million km... Who knows at what speed the tail is extending (most of the frags are moving at 14-15 km/s), in a week it could be 4 million km, maybe more. What if it reached the miss distance of 9-12 million km? It's possible at this point.

How could we be in the middle of a tail
2 million km long if the nucleus itself
is 'only' 0.056 AU away?
Do you know how long an AU is?

Also, the tail is about as dense as the
Earth's atmosphere at 150 km altitude.
It's harmless.

SOHO's latest surprise: gas near the Sun heading the wrong way

20-Nov-2001 Mysterious clouds of gas falling towards the Sun have been spotted with the ESA-NASA SOHO spacecraft. They go against the fast-moving streams of gas that pour out continuously into space, in the solar wind. In today's issue of Astrophysical Journal Letters, the scientists who found them suggest that the inflows are due to frequent local adjustments to the Sun's magnetic field. The discovery promises a better understanding of the sources of the solar magnetism that envelops the Earth, quarrels with our own planet's field, and to some extent protects us from cosmic rays coming from the stars.

For many years astronomers have watched glowing fountains and arches rise and fall in the Sun's lower atmosphere. The gas clouds now seen begin their descent from far out in the atmosphere. They were first noticed in 1997, in images from the LASCO instrument on SOHO. Similar inflows then turned up in re-examined images going back to early in 1996, soon after SOHO's launch, and many others have occurred since.

About 8000 inflow events have now been logged - most of them since 1998 while the Sun has been at its most active, as judged by the high count of sunspots. The inflows can start at an altitude of up to 2 700 000 kilometres above the visible surface, a distance equal to twice the Sun's diameter. Here the accelerating solar wind, leaving the Sun, has reached a speed of about 120 kilometres per second. Fighting against it, the gas clouds travel in at 50-100 kilometres per second. Typically they appear to come to rest about 700 000 kilometres out.

"I was stunned when I saw the first movies showing these inflows," says Bernhard Fleck, ESA's project scientist for the space mission. "Before this discovery by SOHO no one had any idea that gas could travel the wrong way, and be pushed back towards the Sun. Now we must learn from the inflows how the Sun regulates the magnetic fields carried by the solar wind, which are a key driver for the space weather we experience in the Earth's vicinity."

The LASCO instrument blots out the intense direct light from the visible surface, to keep the Sun permanently in eclipse. A multinational scientific team that includes the United States Naval Research Laboratory, France's Laboratoire d'Astronomie Spatiale, Germany's Max Planck-Institut für Aeronomie, and the United Kingdom's Birmingham University, contributed LASCO to SOHO. LASCO is already famous for registering explosive mass ejections from the Sun, and discovering many sungrazing comets.

Even with this powerful instrument, the inflows are hard to see. Most useful for the purpose is the LASCO C2 component, which shows the region from 700 000 to 3 500 000 kilometres from the visible surface. At the Naval Research Laboratory, Neil Sheeley and Yi-Ming Wang find the inflows by subtracting one electronic image from the next, taken 20-25 minutes later, and assembling a series of such difference images into a movie. The human eye is then good at spotting unusual, inward movement against the general background of outflowing gas.

Although the gas feels a very strong pull from the Sun's gravity, this is not the decisive force acting on the inflows. The high rate at which they gather speed initially, and their eventual slowdown, suggest instead that they are firmly under the control of a magnetic force. A few inflows are a backwash from explosive mass ejections, which are sporadic events, but the overwhelming majority occur quite regularly within regions of slow solar wind.

A downpour of 20 inflows per day, seen on the left side of the Sun, can be followed after a lull of two weeks by a similar downpour seen on the right side. This means that the occurrences persist in a particular region on the Sun, which takes two weeks to move from left to right as the Sun rotates. The regional association can continue for months, and suggests to Sheeley and Wang how the inflow regions and the magnetic field are related.

Near the Sun's surface the magnetic field is a patchwork, with field lines looping outwards from some places and back in at others. The solar wind drags the longest loops far out into space, creating contrasting sectors where the magnetic field lines are directed in opposite senses. Before the solar wind has reached its full speed, opposing field lines can short-circuit at a boundary between sectors, to form new magnetic loops. These collapse towards the Sun, carrying with them the inflowing gas clouds now observed.

"We are seeing something opposite to what we expected," says Sheeley. "Normally, when this happens, we initially doubt the observation - suspecting, for example, that the movie is running backwards. But when we confirm that the observation is really correct, we are forced to change our way of thinking. Such mind-changing discoveries help us past temporary snags in our understanding and inevitably lead to progress."

In this case, one area of progress may concern magnetic fields and their effects on Earth. If Sheeley and Wang are right in thinking that the inflows indicate collapsing magnetic loops, pulling material inwards against the outward drag of the solar wind, then these are showing us how the Sun recycles the magnetic field in its atmosphere. This recycling process regulates the strength of the interplanetary magnetic field that extends outward past Earth and affects space weather.

SOHO's inflows thus provide unexpected clues to what influences solar magnetic activity near the Earth and all across the Solar System. Apart from magnetic storms, which can harm technical systems, there is growing interest in the shield that the interplanetary magnetic field provides against cosmic rays. These energetic particles from the Galaxy can cause genetic mutations in living things and glitches in computers, and some scientists think they are also involved in cloud formation on the Earth. But their variations have puzzling features.

Reductions and increases in cosmic rays reaching the Earth are not in perfect step with rising and falling sunspot activity. And when sunspot cycles were of longer duration, 100 years ago, the interplanetary magnetic field was weaker and the cosmic-ray intensity was on average higher than nowadays. The 'mind-changing' discovery of the inflows near the Sun may lead to better explanations of these variations, and eventually to predictions of cosmic-ray intensities.

SOHO is a project of international cooperation between ESA and NASA. The spacecraft was built in Europe for ESA and equipped with instruments by teams of scientists in Europe and the USA. NASA launched SOHO in December 1995, and in 1998 ESA and NASA decided to extend its highly successful operations until 2003.

2 million kilometres in terms of space is almost nothing, really small compared to the infinite vastness of space.

suppose some of these fragments do target earth, so what, they will burn up in the upper atmosphere before any impact.

yes it will be a spectacular meteor shower, with lights and sound , but thats it.

The break-up of Schwassmann-Wachmann 3, named after two German scientists who discovered it early last century, was probably triggered by the sun heating the comet as it emerged from the deep-freeze of the outer solar system.
"It's like pouring hot coffee into a glass that's been in the fridge. The glass shatters from the shock," Dr Lomb said.
The rapid disintegration suggested it was a loosely packed ball of ice and dust, not a single solid object.
"If we ever need to deflect one of these things [from a collision with Earth] we need to know about the structure inside." Using a rocket or a bomb to "shove" a comet away could simply break it apart, turning a bullet aimed at our planet into a blast of shotgun pellets. "It could make it even worse."

Oh really? And I love the PROBABLY part.

Witness,

Really now? Let's look at Shoemaker-Levy 9 fragments which impacted Juipter a decade ago and would have killed us all if it had of hit Earth.

"Some astronomers now suggest that the fragments are about 1 km or smaller"
"Q2.7: How long is the fragment train? 5 million kilometers"
[link to www.physics.sfasu.edu]

"Just before the the first comet fragment hit Jupiter, Zdenek Sekanina wrote that based on Hubble Space Telescope observations in early July 1994 the fragments had effective diameters generally between 1 and 2 kilometers:"
[link to www.physics.sfasu.edu]

(73P was originally estimated to have a core diameter of 1100 meters or 1.1 km)
Source: [link to en.wikipedia.org]

Now I think it's safe to say we have smaller fragments between the ranges of 10 to 50 meters across in the "fragment train" that may or may not impact Earth.

Other Random Info:

The most common meteors, however, are created by dust particles that have an average size of about 0.2 millimeters. Most of them never make it through the atmosphere intact
-------------------
Typically, though, a meteoroid would have to be about the size of a marble for a portion of it to reach the earth's surface. Smaller particles burn up in the atmosphere about 50 to 75 miles (80 to 120 kilometers) above the earth.

astronomer deaths/observatory fires

Remember when Aussie Bloke´s first posts appeared here on GLP ... Remember when he referenced that he had been working on METEORITE RESEARCH for 5 years???

** Now Think ** That would mean Dr. Aussie Bloke was working on METEOR RESEARCH in 1999 which was when the discovery was made AND the FRENCH CABLE CAR CRASHED that same year, killing 20 Astronomers!!!

Plug in the puzzle piece clues here ,,, If the discovery of this threatening Debri-Dust Field was made in 1999, 5 years ago, then that makes all the deaths and fires relevant to his information. And it also gives us a deeper understanding as to why Dr. A Bloke would not want his identity known!

Also note this ---- > The telescope that was searching for these asteroid clouds - dust / debri fields appears to have been the one at MOUNT STROMLO. It was specially equipped to look through DUST - more info/pics referenced at MACHO SITE in links above!

Remember, that entire MOUNT STROMLO Observatory was completely burned down in the Australian widlfires. STROMLO was one of the world´s biggest with all leading Astronomers going there. See links above re PROJECT MACHO at the STROMLO Observatory and how it was delayed for 5 years due to the fires,,, hmmm!!!

Soon the sun will vanish behind a cloud of thick dust...and all hell will reign on earth as we recieve impact after impact. Why do you think they invented a telescop that can look through DUST!! HMMMMM??? they will NEED it very shortly to plot the course of incoming objects so as to try to blast them out of the sky. WHY do you thing they have re enstated the cold war weopons of missle defense???TO SHOOT THE BLOODY THINGS DOWN!!!! Boys and girls...its time to get real here. We are all in very VERY close range of our doom...and STILL some of you are to brainwashed by all the distractions to see what is REALLY going on. Well....so called debunkers....you DO do a good job of keeping the controversy going. Wont matter anymore anyway. You are all in fact already DEAD and are just waiting for the reality of it to sink in. YOU will walk blindly to your deaths laughing all the way...when SUDDENLY the sun will darken...and the moon WILL turn the colour of blood...and death will raind down in the form of nickle-iron chunks of doom moving VERY VERY FAST!!! and you will have only a week or so to realise your death is imminent...and you will remember my words and the warnings of others...and think to yourself:-

I am Australian. In 1975 I lived In Canberra A.C.T. In the suburb of Curtain. I Also Lived at dickson and Manuka. I also had many friends all over Canberra. We used to hang out In Civic and I was there when they Built the Belconnen Mall. I was also there when they built that bloody stupid looking tower on Black mountain. My sister lived in Page in 1985 and in 1987 I lived in the suburb of Cook and in 1990 I lived in evatt. I was a "member" at the Mt Stromlo observatory. It was there that we first spotted some rather interesting things already mentioned. WE were among the first to actually SEE it...but we were the first to actually realize what it meant. I also had a few connections with tracking station 43...THEY were in a flip I can tell you. And so the cover stories began...global warming and other crap was floated about to cover up the truth. SO to you dickheads...what else do I have to do to prove to you I am who I say I am and that I am in fact Australian? IF I go into any more detail I will be tagged and removed...I may have already given away too much.

FROM THE ARCHIVES

Mystery of Cometary X-Rays Solved July 27, 2000 X-rays from Comet C/1999 S4 (LINEAR). On July 14, 2000 the Chandra X-ray Observatory imaged the comet repeatedly for a total of 2 ½ hours and detected X-rays from oxygen and nitrogen ions. The details of the X-ray emission, as recorded on Chandra's Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer, show that the X-rays are produced by collisions of ions racing away from the sun (solar wind) with gas in the comet. In the collision the solar ion captures an electron from a cometary atom into a high energy state. The solar ion then kicks out an X-ray as the electron drops to a lower energy state. The Chandra observations showed variations in the amount of X-rays produced by the comet. These were probably due to a solar flare that occurred on July 12 which would have increased the intensity of the solar wind.

Re: Comet Schwassmann Wachmann Tail "around 2 million kilometres"Quote

Something that is not being taken into account regarding even a small cometry fragment impacting earth and that is the electric nature of comets! Consider the impact on Jupiter - it had far greater effects than was calculated from the size of the fragments. Then you consider deep impact recently. Again, they got it wrong! Not only what a comet is made of but also the way it reacted to the impact was again far greater that was expected! So even if only a small piece got through - just remember - it's NOT a meteorite, neither is it a small asteroid! It's a piece of comet!!
