If you want to escape the BS reality that survives in the USA, AU, and UK, then yeah, its a great place. You can pretty much do what you want so long as you are not hurting anyone else (ie ride across traffic etc).

I think you can only go for 28 days at a time.

If you stay over its a small fine and you have to stay out for some time (I think if you overstay 6 months, you have to stay out 6 months).

Women are friendly and even ask you out. They are not afraid like white women are.

And the food is great and cheap too.

Hire a scooter for $6-8 a day. Motel for maybe $16 or room with food for maybe $60 if you look around.

You need $25,000 usd in a Thai bank for a start - untouched to get a retirement visa. Don't judge a country on the tourist traps - that's like judging America on Las Vegas, and Thai women with vegas show girls...

There are nice places and it can be done, but it takes quite a lot of cash.

Lots of 'eco' farms here with westerners living next to nature, but you do need an income...

and never trust a Thai beauty that speaks good English - unless she is genuinely well educated - and those ones generally don't want to leave Thailand - life is easy here if you are from the upper-middle class... frikin easy.

The 25K is not a big deal, but it's only worth it for the girls. They need to be BORN that way(XX chromosome), and want to be with an older guy. If so, I'm in.

Ive been to Europe and different parts of asia, for me it is thailand hands down though this is based on a short time. my friend was there for months and months who is super crazy to live there says its tops as well

Very good article and I have lived in many shit holes around the world, the best is Thailand. It is true OP, you don't need $25,000 to live there.

It's strange how people from the same places have different attitudes towards the same places, like In that episode of market values where he goes o thailand he's speaking to someone from Belgium who lives there and he's was saying it's so much better living here than in Europe I would rather live here than anywhere in Europe.

I wonder what gives people vastly different perceptions of places?

Believe it or not, decent Thai women (the vast majority) are still very traditional and generally want Thai husbands... those who divorce are generally the ones that want a westerner. Of course younger ones may meet westerners of their own age etc...

Thai men on the whole are not great husbands... still a culture of having mistresses here.. which is why Thai women look for westerners (apart from the money)

There are so many good looking women here that Thai men have a lot of choice (the women do to btw)

All the resorts will be full of women from the poorest regions, and other women who are lookng for fast money (what tourist trap isn't looking for fast money!) So those are the places for willing and pretty 20-30 somethings...

Decent women - you'll have to trawl the dating sites - be aware that sharks operate here also, and make a living from western men sending gifts etc... BUT really if you aren't great looking, you'd better stick to older women (35+) anyone younger and you'll be buying designer handbags forever... you can also meet great women in shops - offices etc... the ones you meet that are working already are best... golf caddies, school teachers etc...

Im 50 years old and had a beautiful Thai girlfriend who was a former gymnast for the national team. She was only 23 years old from a Northern Province who showed me around town. Health care is great and crime is low.

The ladies are pretty but do be careful. There are more good ones than bad ones, just like anywhere else. And the young ladies do fancy older responsible men.

What can I say, I like athletic girls, skinny waist and strong legs with a rear. Northeast Thailand is full of these types of girls with a smile on their face on top of that.

My cost of living varied. Id say around 1K as a low, 1.5k as a high. The article is on target, one could live there cheaper than 1k.
