Have u western men asked the Thai men whether THEY want you there or not?

They ALL know the reason why you are going there, and all I can say is, when there are too many unwanted farangs there who are only after Thai pussy, something is gonna break....and it won't be good.

This is only normal (human and animal) behavior. We are all territorial creatures.

Posts like this and the one about the guy in the inflatable boat in Canada (I think it was?) make me want to just sell all this shit and go make some real memories.

It's not about getting the poon, throw some cash and mind your manners and you can get laid anywhere (yes, even in good old queen-bee US of A), it's about seeing the world, meeting people who have a completely different world view, getting into scrapes just to find a way out of them, never quitting and always doing what is right and true.

It's about being the Doctor, basically.

Ha? Before I moved to France I was living around 20,000 thb in Thailand which is close to the $600 figure the article states. I ate really good and had fun. You can live for more and of course have more things, but you can have a good life and cheap.

I worked in a hotel part time and had my own place, was eating out all the time of good food and beer, had Internet, good nightlife when going out with friends, went to movies, and more. But yeah, you go to a red light district a few times a week and order rounds of drink while still blowing money your $600 will last you 2 weeks.

Great blog post and yes, living for that amount of cash is possible if managed right. Australia guy, those sites you gave out are people who try to work and party every night. Most if those guys would live great if they watched Internet porn instead of partying all the time at the Gogo bars.

Isaan is the best part to love in Thailand. Great food, beautiful athletic women, cheap cost of living and peaceful. For visa can do border runs next door dirt cheap and quick.

I am part Thai and the person who wrote the article has it more or less spot on. I have relatives there who make around $400 per month and get by, though they know the ins and outs of Thailand very well which many westerners do not.

It will be interesting I see what be says in the 3rd part of his series, until then I will reserve judgement of what I think of the articles. So far though I do like what I'm reading.

How about misc. costs like gym fees, taking classes on some hobbies, cost of a bottle of cola, laundry, nightclubs, etc

And yeah, living in a city vs country.

A question for everyone, how is living in BK vs Patayya?

Hmmm... Thailand am I sure is such a marvelous country... but it has been infested by people who are there only in search of, let's say "forbidden pleasures"...

And watch it, they are not soft on people who want to import drugs, in contrary to what some would think.

I can understand you and the author for liking Thailand, but I am somewhat doubtful about his argument for going there.

"If you are tired of being a robot on a daily basis where you go to work, come home to eat some crappy McDonalds burger, watch some boring show on TV, sleep...and repeat this on and on for years, this might the article for you. First off a little bit about me in this article I wrote about my experiment trying to move away from the US."

If you are living like that, why would leaving the US - not to mention leaving for Thailand - be the only option available ? If that's the way you are living, something must be wrong, but are we quite sure there aren't more adequate ways to remedy the problem ? Maybe it's the way you view life and the world which is the (hidden) issue ? Maybe you don't have any worthwhile goals or purposes in life ? Maybe you think this life is all there is, and so you are in desperate need of getting out of it all you can, while you can ?

If that's what's the problem, then yes, I can understand....

But you don't think EVERYONE in the US is living this sort of life ? So why would you have to ?

The food is delicious and healthy in Thailand, the best of any kind. Most of the meals is usually some chicken, pork or beef with some rice like the other poster said.

Thailand caters to the nature types or the city dwellers, and I for one can't wait to go back there as this article has served some motivation for me.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 43263573

Although I practically never have the opportunity to eat it, I love Vietnamese and Thai food. Thai is much more spicy.

Re: Live in Paradise for 600 Bucks a Month? Take me to Thailand
Hmmm lots of question.

Prices

2.2 lbs of pork 4usd
cigerettes 1.50 per pack
lettuce 30cents a head
pepsie 75 cents per liter
Whiskey cheap but good. 6.50 per liter
Bread 1.25 a loaf
chicken 2.2 lb 3.50
lots of veggies and fruits usually around a dollar for a couple of lbs. Food is cheap if you eat the local fair.

Transportion.

Cheapest motorcycle taxi 1 to 2 dollars just about any where in town. excluded bangkok (its big)
tuk tuk 3 wheeled motorcycle with seat in the rear seats 3, cost about 2 to 5 dollars anywhere in town (excluding bankok)
Metered taxis cheaper then unmetered, unmetered taxis (avoid hi priced)
San cow for traveling short hops between towns 1usd. Covered truck with bench seat in the back.

cheap bus 1.29 appox. 50 miles

luxury bus $12 to $15 for 400 miles, air con, reclining seats and stewardess...

Vans 75 miles appox. 5usd.

Lodging from 3usd up. 3 dollars sleeping room with fan shared bathroom. Many small hotels 15 to 20usd per nite with air con.

Visa available for marrage, retirement (50), busienss, costs about 1200usd to set up, school, work all one years cost around $75 dollar.

30 on arrival, 90 tourist visa if you get it before you arrive from Thai consulate. Once in country a border run gives you another 15 days on a visa on arrival.

Work. Not much work for foreigners, Many working as teachers requires degree. Lots of people open bars, you can own but you can't work in them. You just have to sit there and party. thai bar wages paid out about $10 per day. I do have some friend in real estate and they are doing well, down in the south.

All I can think of for now. Oh I opened a small resort with mostly monthy rentals. Invested $200,000 pays me about 600 per month. I have other income. But me and my wife could get by pretty good on the $600 per month. No rent helps.

more question welcome

Gym is $4 I think in Koh Samui.

Coke is about $1 or less.

Laundry cheap, maybe $2 kg.

BKK is great, have not been to pataya.

Cheapest way to get around is to rent a 100cc to 125cc motor cycle automatic, no shift for about 3 to 5 dollars per day. Car for about $20, 200 to 400 cc bike for about 12usd per day.
