Seeing it even once from the air is enough to make you realize that the hole isn't going away and the trees aren't coming back. But it's not possible to look at this picturesque community built so tastefully and discreetly along these beautiful bayous, and not wish that somehow the sinkhole could just go away. Also, John Boudreaux has tagged bottom in the center of the sinkhole (where the raindrop bubbles are occurring) and the depth is over 500′; although, debris was felt at about 175′ to 200′ (while the weight continued to fall to the 500′ depth). Attempts will be made some time this week to measure (with a longer measuring device) to obtain the depth of what is suspected to be the upside down witches hat. We will update accordingly. At the New Almaden quicksilver mine, in California, at a depth of about 600 feet the temperature was very high - some 115 degrees; but in the deepest part of the same mine, 1,800 feet below the surface and 500 feet below sea level, the temperature is very pleasant, probably less than 80 degrees. At the Eureka mines, in California, the air 1,200 feet below the surface appears nearly as cool as 100 feet below the surface. The normal temperature of the earth at a depth of 50 or 60 feet is probably near the mean annual temperature of the air at the particular place. At the Comstock mines, some years since, the miners could remain but a few moments at a time, on account of the heat. Read more: [link to chestofbooks.com] |

In 2005 an oceanic borehole reached 1,416 metres (4,646 ft) below the sea floor from the ocean drilling vessel JOIDES Resolution. [link to en.wikipedia.org (secure)] |
