Thanks for this, OP. I work daily with very large databases & wouldn't have been so elegant trying to explain it to a non-engineer type!

STFU The customers only want their Excel created pie chart and an occasional scatterplot with an OLS line. ;p

Big data and big data analysis is the career path of the future...

IF YOU'RE IN COLLEGE - AND YOU LIKE MATH OR PROGRAMMING AT ALL - LOOK AT BIG DATA

You're talking big bucks and some cool stuff. It's one thing to analyze big data, the real secret is in translating that into a usable interface and display to the morons who make the decisions based off it.

BIG DATA IS bsflag

You could have all the data you want, but if you do not have a competent statistician that knows how to process and interpret it you are screwed.

Also, it has been my experience that the average American student is an idiot. Granted there have been a few exceptions, but most Americans are too lazy to pursue a degree in Statistics. The math requirements are often too much for them to handle, and many cannot develop the proper mindset to handle them --- the ability to reason abstractly, prove theorem/lemmas/corollaries in a rigorous manner, write efficient applications to solve problems, and solve relevant mathematical/statistical problems without their hand being held.
