Rogue wave moriches bay Long Island New York today
My dad was fishing on one of the calmest ocean days. Out of moriches inlet. (Yes he brought flowers in remembrance of the twa flight). Anyway the ocean was exceptionally calm... Until he and his 3 friends spotted a rogue wave. At least 5 feet. May sound like nothing. But if they were in a smaller boat they would have capsized. Ocean was like glass. Any ideas? Anyone else out there today? Supposedly took up the whole horizon east to west.

Thanks. Thing is my dad has been fishing on boats over 50 years. 2nd time w a rogue wave and I'm just glade I wasn't there!! Another interesting point- he was w a few childhood friends. One of whom worked for FBI. Happened to be in basement level of world trade tower training rifle practice. I kid you not. Anyway he got word of a plane crashing ( the first plane) got all of his students out. Knew it was terrorists. Can't make this stuff up. Proud to know my dad and him.

Kinda small for a proper rogue wave, kind of an immature wannabe wave.

Haaaaa :) but really my dad and his friends aren't making this up. They said the wave def looked like that of a tsunami type when you are out at sea. Just curious bc didn't hear of any eqs.

Problem was the ocean was like glass. So it was odd enough ocean so calm but more odd to have this wave out of no where.

Well I feel important but my dad gets all the credit. He only wished he turned his boat around (into the wave I'm guessing). Any other questions I will ask him?) just surprised bc it is a main fishing area. And my dad doesn't scare easly. Nor do his friends.

This is a tiny precursor to the big tsunami we will experience soon. The eastern continental shelf is fixing to slump off. When it does it will be a very bad day for the outer banks and Norfolk. A very bad day indeed.

Coming soon. It is the same as snow building up on a roof edge. I have watched it many times. It starts to slip a little a first then slowly the whole thing goes. This new sediment from all the rain we have been having is not going to help things either.

Wait and see. They're all going to die.

Maybe.

Rogue waves are far more common than once thought.

There was a study a few years ago reviewing satellite data that removed the myth that they were very rare.

Thanks for the info. But curious what exactly causes them? Eq activity? Global shaking? Possible meteors? Who knows

Yes and thanks again. But I'm curious what displacement caused this? There was an eq in Arkansas and I swore it had nothing to do w it but my mom and dad both wondered where the fault line could lay? I thought it would have had to been an eq out of the Atlantic Ocean. Anyone?

I get it I really do. But ocean was calm as glass. This was enough to scare all of my dad and his friends. Including an ex FBI and the fact that my dad had over 50 years experience on the ocean. I was really hoping someone else was out there today to concur
