I was diagnosed in 2010 with Hashimoto's disease. When the thyroid shuts down it is a bad deal. I have been taking Synthroid and diet/exercise daily. I have to or I would be the size of the good year blimp! I can tell when my RX needs adjusted because I feel like a battery that has been drained.

Yes. Here is something to think about: Many people self medicate with coffee. Feeling tired? Brain fog? Have some coffee! It's the quick fix that adds to the long term problem. I was guilty of this.

Avoid soybean oil, aka "vegetable oil".

Substitute virgin unprocessed coconut oil and olive oil for the soybean oil. There are many threads on this site for VCO. I have started using it for everything!

I have tried Atomidine and Lugol's. For me, Magnascent works best.

I take 5 drops a day in water. Every once in awhile I take the weekend off to give my kidney's a rest.

get some betadine (or equivalent), and put a small smear above the naval, the body can only store so much and the rest is removed as waste.
 Quoting: Citizenperth

The betadine smear is also a good way to gauge iodine levels, If it absorbs (Fades) before six hours you're deficient. mine faded in less than an hour when I first started researching this problem. I put it on my wrist.

Phytoestrogens from soy are well known for causing thyroid disease and the same is valid for corn, especially GMO corn.
Goitrogens include corn, sweet potatoes, lima beans, and soy.

I was posted in W. Germany when Chernobyl tripped off the line. I'm hypothyroid and will be taking Synthroid for the rest of my life. I have been trying to use supplements to kick my thyroid into gear.

So far no luck. Don't let it happen to you!
 Quoting: Conjure Woman

Synthroid? Don't take it. It's only T4 and you need a balance with T3 as well. Not everyone can convert T4 to T3 very well.

I recommend nature throid or armour thyroid.
 Quoting: SevenThunders

I was Dx last year with HypoT. I cannot tolerate T3. There's a huge push on taking Armour. Tried a 2.5 mcg of cytomel, terrible side effects. Tried a 1/4 grain, side effects were awful. Not everyone can tolerate the additional T3 unfortunately.

Tolerated Levoxyl....pharma has now pulled from shelves. Pharma changed the Armour couple of years ago too. It's interesting how thyroid meds help, and then pharma comes in and changes the ingredients or pulls it off the shelves. Leaving us with a limited choice of thyroid help, while thyroid Dx keep going up.

Re: The Growing Epidemic of Thyroid Disease and What To Do About It: here it comes, the inevitable.
Let's not forget the ongoing fluoridation of drinking water in the United States when it comes to the growing incidence of thyroid disease.

What's the most important element in thyroid metabolism and health? Iodine, a member of the halide family. What's fluorine's family? Halide. What is fluorine's claim to fame among elements? Its intense electronegativity, enough to forcibly displace chlorine, bromine and, yes, iodine in chemical reactions.

Chalk up yet another victory for the fluoridators. Not only have they crippled our country's collective will, they're also physically making us too sick and ill to fight back. And it's absolutely working. When I was in medical school nearly twenty years ago, the incidence of thyroid disease (hypothyroid, hyperthyroid, thyroid cancer, multinodular goiters, thyroiditis) was between 1 in 35 to 1 in 50, depending on which study you read. While I was in residency, that incidence increased to roughly 1 in 25. Ten years ago it was revised to 1 in 15. Now the incidence is roughly 1 in 7, for the same family of illnesses! Even starting with the more inclusive number of 1 in 35, this represents a 400% increase in thyroid disease in less than twenty years! I used to diagnose about two patients a week with thyroid problems. Now it's about two or three a day. Yeah, something's definitely up.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 37898339

THIS

And hey it's exciting to have a doctor onboard. Thanks for joining our crazy crew.

I'm 100% convinced that fluoride/fluorines are the cause of my dog's hypothyroid condition because he has had three isoflurane anesthesias in the past year. Before that, no hypothyroid (or at least no symptoms). I myself have suffered from mysterious joint pain for the past 5 years and that all started with a couple of courses of cipro and a couple of surgeries with inhaled anesthesia.

Doing a little internet research I've learned that there is a post-operative condition in humans called "post-surgical cognitive decline" seen esp. in older people. The likelihood and severity are correlated with the duration of the surgery. I wonder, has any study tested the thyroids of these patients?

Re: The Growing Epidemic of Thyroid Disease and What To Do About It: here it comes, the inevitable.
Many years back, I got really sick. 103-104 fever for well over a month due to double pneumonia. After that, my endocrine system was all messed up. Went on meds and for the past ten years and now I have bloodwork done a few times a year to make sure I've got the right dose of meds.

Fastforward to two years ago, they noticed in my bloodwork that I've got hypothyroidism. It had actually been going on for four years before that but they missed it. It was a relief because I just wasn't the same guy anymore and I didn't know why. No energy, depressed, nothing was interesting anymore.

I go on meds and at first the cure is worse than the disease. Was literally suicidal for months but I'm finally good now.

Last summer my wife was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. Had to have it removed and she's finally out of the woods now.

Six months ago I took my son into the doctor for a full physical because the kids is, for lack of a better word, fat. He shouldn't be fat though. He eats well for a 14 year old and gets plenty of exercise.

Turns out he's hypothyroid too.

Had a company come out and do an environmental study to see if there was any issues like radiation or pollution/toxins, etc. Zip. Nada.

WTF is going on?

Iodine deficiency has always been a problem in America, and why "they" started putting it in the salt.

The only problem, in later years, is the fact that Greed-stricken Corporate Society now use a dangerous chemical form of "Iodine". The jackassesredfaceare nothing but a clutch of murderous witches gathered round a collective cauldronrockon

Another very important thing to take for radiation fall-out etc. is the white stuff under/attached to orange, grapefruit etc. peel, which i think is called "Bioflavinoid".- the Vit. "C" you purchase should already have it in it, and also "Rutin":

Rutin extended my cat's life for several months (he had congestive heart failure). Doctors aren't exactly sure how it works but it's very good for cardiovascular system.

Sorry about the wall of text, I tried to condense the story but being concise is apparently not one of my talents.

I have thought about posting about this for a while but for some reason have been hesitant. I'm not real big on sharing personal information online but with the discussion taking place here maybe now is the time to share my story as a warning to others.

I had been having many symptoms of hypothyroidism for a little over a year. Although my blood test showed mild hypothyroidism my doctor kept telling me there was nothing to worry about. If it got any worse he might put me on medication.

In December 2011 I was felling quite bad. I was so tired. I felt like my body was made of lead. In the span of 3 months I had put on 20 pounds although I was actually eating less than usual. The worst part of it was that it was affecting my ability to think clearly, my memory was seriously hindered. There were other things but I won't ramble on about them all.

So I go back to my doctor. He ignores everything I tell him about except for the weight gain. He says well obviously your taking in more calories than your burning. His suggestion was diet pills! Now let me make something clear, I've been mildly overweight since my mid twenties but my weight had been stable never varying more than a few pounds in the 15 years I'd been going to him. This was something far out of the norm for me.

That day he runs some more blood work, it comes back abnormal again. Once again he says it's not bad enough to warrant thyroid medication and that I should consider diet medication. I told him that I wanted to see an endocrinologist. He could either refer me or I would find my own. He reluctantly referred me.

The first thing the new doc did was an ultrasound. There was a large (I forget the exact size) mass on the right side of my thyroid. Further test, scans, biopsies, ext. confirmed that it was cancer. My entire thyroid was compromised. In Feb 2012 my thyroid was removed. Once the surgeon was in he found that the cancer has spread to the muscle tissue in my neck.

After the surgery it appears through multiple scans that everything had been dealt with and that the cancer was gone. I jubilant knowing that I had beat it. I shouldn't have jumped the gun on that one.

1 year ago I went back to my endocrinologist. During a routine scan it was discovered that there were now tumors on the thyroid bed. So now it's on to radiation treatment. I've been given courses of radioactive iodine I-131. It's certainly not as bad as Chemo but it was quite unpleasant. So, after all of the radiation I go through all of the testing again and appear to have been cured.

A week ago toady I went back to my endocrinologist. It appears that I now have a mass on one of my parathyroids. I've spent the last week undergoing more test and am awaiting the results.

Well, if your still with me =), I have shared all of this today with the hope that my story might save someone else from going through what I have since Dec. 2011. If I had pushed my doctor harder, if I'd refused to just accept that it “was no big deal” This cancer would have been caught earlier and would have been much easier to “cure” I wouldn't still be dealing with it a year in a half or so later.

I implore you, listen to your body. You know when something is just not right. It may not be something just blatantly obvious to your doctor but you know something bad is happening in your body. If you think you may be having thyroid issue please, Please be an advocate for your self and insist that your issues are properly evaluated by a specialist. I wish every day that I had stood stronger and pushed harder to get my problems evaluated. Please don't make the same mistake I did.

Something to ad to the thread. My endocrinologist has said in the past year or so the number of Thyroid cancer patients he sees has tripled.

Re: The Growing Epidemic of Thyroid Disease and What To Do About It: here it comes, the inevitable.
It's not just the thyroid but adrenals too. The adrenals are next to our kidneys and they have also become over stimulated and don't work. You can bet if you have thyroid problems then you have adrenal problems.

Personally I decided to supplement with raw adrenal and thyroid in dessicated form. I have many of the symptoms of hypothyroidism and there are about 300 or so.
so my logic is what is worse, having overstimulated adrenals which aren't working and a under active thyroid which is slowly killing me or the fear that the medical community puts out about how dessicated thyroid and adrenals from bovine that is bio identical to the human body is dangerous. So I supplement.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 3494980

Coffee is a no no. It blows out the adrenals.

I have been pretty healthy my whole life.

I'm 36 now, but a few years ago I was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism and a few months later I was diagnosed with Systemic Lupus.

I now take 100mg synthroid for my thyriod and plaquenil for the lupus.

What the hell happened to me?

I'm so sorry to hear your story. I'm not usually a litigious person but in your case I think I'd bring a malpractice case against that first doctor. What an ass.

My husband also had thyroid cancer, as did his brother. They grew up in a military family living on bases through their childhoods. He's had the surgery and the radiation and seems to be cured. But he's still worried and goes back for regular checks.

The somewhat amusing thing about his case is that it all started with a TOE FUNGUS. Ha ha! He had a toe fungus and the doctor required him to get a liver test before prescribing the med for it. The liver test showed elevated enzymes and from there they did more tests and that led to the thyroid.

Iodine 131 radiation is a big cause of thyroid diesease.
[link to en.wikipedia.org (secure)]

I was checking local radiation charts for SLC and I found on 3/28/2013 the radiation detectors picked up 190 pc/iL it was all detected in the precipitation! No other radiation detectors picked it up.

But the safe amount of this that can be in drinking water is 3 pc/iL!!

I have screen shots of the data I'll upload it.

Re: The Growing Epidemic of Thyroid Disease and What To Do About It: here it comes, the inevitable.
I ordered a advanced mono atomic, IODINE, alcohol tincture, from DR BILL DEAGLE @ [link to nutrimedical.com] . WOW, does it work! 3 bottles of it over last 2 1/2 years, shared with my wife and kids. it's simply the best IODINE out there, called "NUTRIODINE". it has changed my life...my wife lost over 60 #, my brain and energy levels are better than anytime, even when i was young. i am convinced i was "OVER VACCINATED", several times, when i traveled to Europe, and also joined the military. the NUTRIODINE, got nearly ALL the mercury out of my brain, and it turned into a GAS VAPOR, going out, the cracks of my cranium and scalp. i had a few irritated lesions on my scalp for @ 6 months, along with itching, but then it went away. i must comment, that this was combined along with HAWAIIAN SUNSHINE, lot's of laying out, and proper athletic activity. i have had no thyroid conditions, but am convinced that for most people, it would at least minimum, generate new cells in the glands, and also up your hormone levels. it's $49 per 2 oz bottle, and you place it on your right wrist, and under your right ankle. follow dosing procedures, NEVER; too much. take breaks, drink lot's of water, especially alkaline water. there is a risk of severe to mild de toxing reactions in your kidneys and liver. good luck!bump

Yep.. The brainwashing works.

It is caused by anything but the nuclear meltdowns.

Why can't it be both nuclear meltdowns and GMO's? I think they are trying to make us sick and kill us through our food also. Population control, greed for money, they don't care about us.

I've no doubt that it is not merely from fuku..
My point is that the fact of fuku contamination is still denied by many otherwise sensible posters..
