Thank you for posting this. I was actually reading about thyroid conditions last night. I am positive that I have been suffering from some sort of thyroid condition for the last couple years. Thankfully I finally have health insurance and will be visiting a doctor very soon.

There was information stating that between 13 million to 59 million(different websites) people could be suffering from some sort of thyroid condition and not even know it !

I have several of the symptoms:

My once blonde hair is turning black, super course, and several strands fall out each day. Yesterday a small chunk of about 10 hairs fell out.

Trouble with my eyes...they always feel gritty, bulging senstation which doesn't happen all that often(thank god) in the past I had sensitivity to light...I had to stop driving at night because head lights hurt my eyes.

Bathroom trouble
Depression
Infertility
Sleep problems(wide awake at night but when I fall asleep I can sleep 11 hours and still be tired)
Heart palpitations(Wen't to hospital because I thought I was having a heart attack)

The worse is the memory loss. I'm 28 so it's very scary. I will say something and a second later not remember anything. Go into the store for two items and forget what they are.

If I don't have something wrong with my thyroid i'm screwed !
Ain't no sunshine when she's gone...ain't no borderline psychotic emotional outbursts either.

I also have a sneaky suspicion that dental X-Rays could be causing thyroid problems. My thyroid problems became apparent after having several dental X-Rays. Had the problem now for fifteen years and it will not correct itself, I use Armorthyroid and kelp/iodine.

Hyper, over active thyroid people should not use iodine.

get some betadine (or equivalent), and put a small smear above the naval, the body can only store so much and the rest is removed as waste.
 Quoting: Citizenperth

Really? How often would you be required to do that? hf u2efine
 Quoting: sacred energy

done daily at about 3 cm spread, dependent upon readings.

Unwise to do it unless informed.. mind you.. who is informed?

Again, the body excretes unused iodine...
 Quoting: Citizenperth

I understand that applying the iodine to the wrist area and soles of feet is effective.

If the iodine fades very quickly, it means the body is deficient and needs it; if it takes awhile to fade or does not fade completely, then there is enough.

Is that correct?

If you have a friend that has well water then take advantage of it!!!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 43092328

Only thing I would caution about that is where the water well is located . . . for instance, many places around America now have been gas drilled/fracked and well water could be contaminated, so everyone drinking well water should consider those things in term of quality of water.

Get some help quickly! You sound like me 20 years ago. I almost died. My potassium levels were so low that my flesh didn't bounce back when pressed. I prayed right before I went to the doctor and said if I am supposed to live then help me get well. I know synthroid isn't supposed to be good on its own, but after taking it, I was so energized I felt like I was reborn! It was a miracle for me.

I take SSKI (soluable solution of potassium iodide) a couple of times a week for chronic bronchitis. Had bronchitis for my entire adult life.

SSKI is the same chemical as in the IOSAT potassium iodide tablets.

Hopefully this has helped in my case.
I'm tired of waiting, somebody push the damn button already!

Ok guys, get your pens or printers ready!

You are sick because there IS an imbalance in your life. You must balance everything in life to be healthy and happy. YOU are in control of your health and if you apply what you know to be real and true, you will be better than you ever knew you could.

1) stop eating wheat. Most wheat products contain bromide which blocks iodine uptake. It causes pain and inflammation. This is a must if you are type1 or 2 diabetic, have IBS or Crohn's, or weight problems.
2) stop eating commercial dairy it is the most common cause of ear infections, and type 1 diabetes. This will dramatically improve your health. If you must have dairy, find a local raw source. You can get calcium from leafy greens, bone broths, spirulina, and egg shells baked at 325 for 30 minutes then put into a coffee grinder to make a powder.
3) stop eating sugar and artificial sweeteners. Artificial sweeteners cause cancer. Sugar feeds cancer.
4) eat locally produced food as much as possible. Know your farmer. The health of an animal that you are going to consume should be of high concern. Start your own garden.
5) eat a allergen free ketogenic diet or a paleo diet. If you're a devout vegan or vegetarian, good luck with that. I've been there and done that. I require meat. High fat, moderate protein, low carbs. This diet will also starve many cancers out. Olive oil, coconut oil and lots of it.
6) get a shower filter
7) throw out your microwave and get a toaster oven
8) drink either spring or distilled water. This is nonnegotiable if you want good health.
9) do not drink sodas. You are simply paying to ruin your teeth and your health. Learn to make your own fizzy beverages such as homemade soda or lactofermented beverages, this way the sugar is natural and converted into CO2. This is also a way to get live cultures in your diet which construct a large portion of your immune system in your digestive tract.
10) stop watching tv. It's rotting your brain. Go for a walk. Do some yoga. Dance. Sing. Go fishing. Learn to identify wild edibles and mushrooms. There are several better ways one can spend their time.
11) paint your skin with iodine
12) take hormone balancers such as maca, bee pollen and coconut oil. These stressful times are zapping our endocrine systems.
13) get adequate sleep. 8-10 hours a day. More if you are exhausted.
14) deal with your emotional and spiritual issues. Disease surfaces in these two realms before the physical. Talk to someone you trust, fully feel your emotions, accept responsibility for yourself. Forgive yourself, forgive others.
15) only drink high quality alcohol. Beers made cheaply have GMOs and high fructose corn syrup.
15) bathe in Epsom salt regularly. It is magnesium which we are very deficient in and it is readily absorbed by the skin. Bathe in 2 cups for 20 minutes. Drink water before and after bath.
16) clays such as zeolite are exceptional for drawing out toxins, even radioactive ones. Can be taken internally and externally.
17) quit using toxic hygiene products. These are loaded with hormone disrupters. You can use olive oil in you hair overnight, followed in the morning with half water and half apple cider vinegar. Leave this in for 25 minutes then rinse with water and then rinse with baking soda and water to pull vinegar smell out. This is the cheapest most fantastic hair care regimen ever. Seriously, you will finally love your hair. This will treat and prevent lice much better than dangerous chemicals from the store. Use coconut oil with a very small amount if baking soda as deodorant. Get an all natural toothpaste or look around online until you find a recipe for a homemade one you like. Use Shea butter, coconut oil, olive oil etc on your skin. Do not use lotions. Protect your skin from the sun by graduating exposure, avoiding overexposure and clothing hats etc.
18) look into ayurvedic dental care. This includes oil pulling and bitter chewing sticks. Your teeth and gums can regenerate on this.
19) learn how to make bone broths. It is simple and inexpensive and exceptionally good for your health.
20) be kind to yourself and others. Actively work to think good thoughts because your thoughts create your reality. No lie.
21) google castor oil packs for liver and pancreas. This is cheap and easy and it can fire your pancreas back up even if you have type 1 diabetes. In fact, I think anyone that has either type 1 or 2 diabetes would be nothing short of amazed if you went on a allergen free ketogenic diet and did castor oil packs over your liver and pancreas. The liver and pancreas have a symbiotic relationship. The whole body is a a collection of symbiotic systems. We must care for all organs responsible for hormonal regulation. We can't just tend to one and expect the whole to be, well, whole.
22) take a high quality bioavailable magnesium supplement. Eat lots of greens.

Take care friends

Instead of all this focus on prevention and survival, why the fuck hasn't anybody just gone ahead and retired ALL the nuclear reactors *(and the offshore rigs)*.

If we're headed for worldwide disaster, why not just protect the earth and everybody in it?

We are destroying the earth.

Interesting.

Look up thyroid disease and the paleo diet. People who "go paleo" seem to cure their thyroid disease.

I can vouch for paleo or equivalent diet works, I don't eat processed. I eat fruit, Vegetables, And wild shot meat where possible. I drink three liters of Osmotically filtered water a day. I feel better than I have in a long time.

I ordered a advanced mono atomic, IODINE, alcohol tincture, from DR BILL DEAGLE @ [link to nutrimedical.com] . WOW, does it work! 3 bottles of it over last 2 1/2 years, shared with my wife and kids. it's simply the best IODINE out there, called "NUTRIODINE". it has changed my life...my wife lost over 60 #, my brain and energy levels are better than anytime, even when i was young. i am convinced i was "OVER VACCINATED", several times, when i traveled to Europe, and also joined the military. the NUTRIODINE, got nearly ALL the mercury out of my brain, and it turned into a GAS VAPOR, going out, the cracks of my cranium and scalp. i had a few irritated lesions on my scalp for @ 6 months, along with itching, but then it went away. i must comment, that this was combined along with HAWAIIAN SUNSHINE, lot's of laying out, and proper athletic activity. i have had no thyroid conditions, but am convinced that for most people, it would at least minimum, generate new cells in the glands, and also up your hormone levels. it's $49 per 2 oz bottle, and you place it on your right wrist, and under your right ankle. follow dosing procedures, NEVER; too much. take breaks, drink lot's of water, especially alkaline water. there is a risk of severe to mild de toxing reactions in your kidneys and liver. good luck!bump

Re: The Growing Epidemic of Thyroid Disease and What To Do About It: here it comes, the inevitable.
I have a gross thyroid story and it just happened today. I went in for a blood test for thyroid because the doctor increased my medication due to her first set of tests showing it vibing too hard.

So, this really has nothing to do with thyroid.

A new person is going to take my blood and I am thinking ...are you new, new or haven't I seen you before?

I say my veins are hard to hit and you can only use my right arm. My veins aren't for amateurs to hit. She sticks me and misses and I notice it is a big honking needle and then she pulls it back and pushes it in digging for a vein.

I said "did you miss it?" yes

I was grossed out by the needle being pulled out and put in.

She must have been really new because immediately she had back up.

I say to the next lady, my left arm has better veins but doctors have told me not to let it be used due to having no lymph nodes on that side.

She doesn't give a shit.

She sticks the left arm with a tiny needle and gets the blood and it didn't hurt.

It is a timely thyroid story. I have always taken the same medication and was surprised to see it need to be increased.

I may have thyroid problems due to past radiation therapy (in the past). :)

I feel like a thread killer.

So one time during radiation therapy, they were aiming somewhere around the bottom of the neck, the person and another person that were watching when they sent the radiation both got looks on their faces like something went really wrong. They recovered pretty quickly and I thought fuck it what is done is done but I always thought they hit my thyroid. I did think that.

Re: The Growing Epidemic of Thyroid Disease and What To Do About It: here it comes, the inevitable.
Sorry about the wall of text, I tried to condense the story but being concise is apparently not one of my talents.

I have thought about posting about this for a while but for some reason have been hesitant. I'm not real big on sharing personal information online but with the discussion taking place here maybe now is the time to share my story as a warning to others.

I had been having many symptoms of hypothyroidism for a little over a year. Although my blood test showed mild hypothyroidism my doctor kept telling me there was nothing to worry about. If it got any worse he might put me on medication.

In December 2011 I was felling quite bad. I was so tired. I felt like my body was made of lead. In the span of 3 months I had put on 20 pounds although I was actually eating less than usual. The worst part of it was that it was affecting my ability to think clearly, my memory was seriously hindered. There were other things but I won't ramble on about them all.

So I go back to my doctor. He ignores everything I tell him about except for the weight gain. He says well obviously your taking in more calories than your burning. His suggestion was diet pills! Now let me make something clear, I've been mildly overweight since my mid twenties but my weight had been stable never varying more than a few pounds in the 15 years I'd been going to him. This was something far out of the norm for me.

That day he runs some more blood work, it comes back abnormal again. Once again he says it's not bad enough to warrant thyroid medication and that I should consider diet medication. I told him that I wanted to see an endocrinologist. He could either refer me or I would find my own. He reluctantly referred me.

The first thing the new doc did was an ultrasound. There was a large (I forget the exact size) mass on the right side of my thyroid. Further test, scans, biopsies, ext. confirmed that it was cancer. My entire thyroid was compromised. In Feb 2012 my thyroid was removed. Once the surgeon was in he found that the cancer has spread to the muscle tissue in my neck.

After the surgery it appears through multiple scans that everything had been dealt with and that the cancer was gone. I jubilant knowing that I had beat it. I shouldn't have jumped the gun on that one.

1 year ago I went back to my endocrinologist. During a routine scan it was discovered that there were now tumors on the thyroid bed. So now it's on to radiation treatment. I've been given courses of radioactive iodine I-131. It's certainly not as bad as Chemo but it was quite unpleasant. So, after all of the radiation I go through all of the testing again and appear to have been cured.

A week ago toady I went back to my endocrinologist. It appears that I now have a mass on one of my parathyroids. I've spent the last week undergoing more test and am awaiting the results.

Well, if your still with me =), I have shared all of this today with the hope that my story might save someone else from going through what I have since Dec. 2011. If I had pushed my doctor harder, if I'd refused to just accept that it “was no big deal” This cancer would have been caught earlier and would have been much easier to “cure” I wouldn't still be dealing with it a year in a half or so later.

I implore you, listen to your body. You know when something is just not right. It may not be something just blatantly obvious to your doctor but you know something bad is happening in your body. If you think you may be having thyroid issue please, Please be an advocate for your self and insist that your issues are properly evaluated by a specialist. I wish every day that I had stood stronger and pushed harder to get my problems evaluated. Please don't make the same mistake I did.

Something to ad to the thread. My endocrinologist has said in the past year or so the number of Thyroid cancer patients he sees has tripled.
 Quoting: Zuzu

I'm so sorry to hear your story. I'm not usually a litigious person but in your case I think I'd bring a malpractice case against that first doctor. What an ass.

My husband also had thyroid cancer, as did his brother. They grew up in a military family living on bases through their childhoods. He's had the surgery and the radiation and seems to be cured. But he's still worried and goes back for regular checks.

The somewhat amusing thing about his case is that it all started with a TOE FUNGUS. Ha ha! He had a toe fungus and the doctor required him to get a liver test before prescribing the med for it. The liver test showed elevated enzymes and from there they did more tests and that led to the thyroid.
 Quoting: berniemom2012

Toe fungus! that's crazy. I sincerely hope that is was caught early and he lives a nice long cancer free life. Sounds like his Doc is doing a good job, tracing thyroid cancer from toe fungus. Amazing,

It has passed my mind that I could file a law suit against the first doc. But to be honest, right now I just don't have energy to take on all of the activities that must be dealt with in a lawsuit. Maybe, if the statute of limitations has not run out I might look into legal options when I'm feeling a bit stronger
 Quoting: Zuzu

Well I'm wishing you the same. I know how hard it is to doubt a doctor, they're so f'ing over-confident. And then figuring what to do once you lose confidence in your doctor. Looking for another, making appointments, waiting. And who knows, the second one might be just as dumb.

I'm glad you finally got the help you needed. Don't blame yourself for not taking action sooner, I mean, its just very hard!

Best wishes ...

 Quoting: MostlySunshine

Memory loss is a classic symptom.

Also! There's a condition called post-surgical cognitive deficit that is a known syndrome. It's considered a mystery but I'll bet you dimes to dollars it's due to isoflurane (or similar) which is a fluorine-based inhaled anesthetic.

I have been pretty healthy my whole life.

I'm 36 now, but a few years ago I was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism and a few months later I was diagnosed with Systemic Lupus.

I now take 100mg synthroid for my thyriod and plaquenil for the lupus.

What the hell happened to me?

Always healthy, then not.

A few questions for you:

Have you ever had urinary tract infection (or vaginal infection if you're a woman)? If so, how many times and what were you treated with?

Have you ever had minor surgery with inhaled anesthesia? If so how many times?
 Quoting: berniemom2012

A few UTI's in my life time.

When I was 12 I had a laparoscopy done and was diagnosed with a severe case of endometriosis (4 years ago I had to do in vitro fertilization to have my twin girls.)

When I was 21 I had a tubal pregnancy and had to have an emergency salpingectomy. (removal of my tube)

I have been put under anesthesia at least 5 times in my life.

Why do you ask?
 Quoting: LittleMissDictator

Hi there -- Sorry for the delay (I was at work all day) and hope you will return to read this!

The most commonly-prescribed antibiotic for urinary tract infections is ciprofloxacin ("cipro"). It is based on a fluoride molecule. It destroys thyroid & joint health. It is implicated in fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, and Gulf War Syndrome.

Fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue are more common in women in men, and it so happens that women get Cipro a lot more due to higher incidence of urinary infections, and also the fact that fluoride clears from the female body more slowly than from the male body.

Gulf War syndrome could have arisen from the fact that soldiers are given Cipro as a prophylactic against bacterial infections.

As for anesthesia, the most commonly-used inhaled anesthetics these days are also fluoride based. Isoflurane is one.

You could very well be suffering from fluoride poisoning! Some of us are more exposed than others, and some of us are more sensitive than others.

Google "fluoride action network" for more info. There are some great books that have been written about fluoride.

Re: The Growing Epidemic of Thyroid Disease and What To Do About It: here it comes, the inevitable.
Synthroid? Don't take it. It's only T4 and you need a balance with T3 as well. Not everyone can convert T4 to T3 very well.

I recommend nature throid or armour thyroid.
 Quoting: SevenThunders

The majority of doctors will not prescribe natural thyroid, and many insurance plans will not cover it.

For those who are stuck with synthroid (or generic equivalents), you'll want to take 1000mg of L-TYROSINE every day along with your meds. It is an amino acid that helps the body convert T4 to T3 (and T2 and T1, for that matter).
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 43597806

My doc. won't prescribe anything else. It's going to be hell when he retires. In my case I have Gilbert's syndrome which causes a liver enzyme deficiency. One of the roles of that enzyme is to convert T4 to T3.

As of right now there are still 2 sources of natural thyroid you can get without a prescription. One of them is from a Thailand based pharmaceutical company and the other one is natural sources raw thyroid.

There is actually a big crackdown on sources of natural thyroid. They stopped manufacturing armour thyroid for a while and it was very hard to get. I have to believe they want Americans tired, sick and easily controllable.

It's a definite conspiracy in my mind.

Hypothyroidism / Underactive Thyroid can be treated very well using Herbal Medicine

Before you begin a LIFE LONG course of drugs (thyroxine) please use this method first !!

It will save you much grief and suffering.

Hypothyroid (underactive thyroid) can be healed back to its normal function without Thyroxine. If you have been recently diagnosed and wonder if there is a superior method than lifelong drug replacement, then this is the correct method for you. Even if you have been on Thyroxine for many years, it is often possible to begin this protocol/treatment and gradually reduce your Thyroxine over a 4 month period. You can then get the levels checked and you will be very surprised at your thyroids ability to restore to its natural normal functioning again.

For more than 17 years Darren Grech has been treating hundreds of cases successfully.

Darren Grech has much experience and has conducted over 35,000 consultations covering many medical conditions from patients all over Australia. With over 17 years experience in full time practice Darren Grech has the expertise to know the best treatment for your condition.

Many patients from all over Western Australia have decided to use Darren Grech’s treatment instead of drugs. Hypothyroidism can often be actually eradicated and many patients want a much better and more logical approach and have found this natural method very effective.

Darren Grech specialises in using internal Herbal Medicine taken orally which usually treats hypothyroidism extremely well. Some of the most severe cases have also been treated very well. In fact the protocols offered have about 90% success rate.

Usually the symptoms of tiredness and weight gain begins to improve after a few weeks on the treatment. It is best to continue this natural treatment for about 6 to 12 months. The goal with this method is to restore the thyroids natural ability to produce the normal amount of hormone.
