1. Mendocino hosts a witch camp every year (in the redwoods)
2. Charles Manson was arrested in Mendocino county..and the girls he sent up there were known as the "Mendocino witches"
3. Old articles on the internet..like 1 from the Chicago tribune about children saying they witnessed drinking blood, cannibalism, and other children being sacrificed in satanic rituals in mendocino county

I've stayed in a few places up there. Clear Lake, Happy Camp, Feather River, Paradise, and never heard any weird stories.

That was Mendecino - hippy dippy, artsy fartsy type of places tend to attract wiccan, new age. Just like visiting Berkeley would.

I used to live right next to their property. Didn't know anything about The Grove when I moved there. Next door neighbor was one of the first members of La Vey's church and best friends with his daughter. She was no longer a practicing member and told us some very creepy stories, like people cutting off their own thumbs as sacrifice and blood drinking. And, after knowing her, I now believe in Lycanthropy - she was amazingly beautiful in her youth but had developed a 'condition' where she would grow so much body hair that she even had to shave her knuckles daily! Oh yeah, and she lived with a pack of 5 wolves in her house.

No Witch was burned at the Stake. They were hung, or died in the Jail. Some were put in the Dunking Chair and drown in the local pond. The Burning took place in Europe during the Witch Hunts over there.

As for the second part, there was actually two Witches that were actually killed in Salem. But again, many were innocent, but the use of the Fear of Witches was used to obtain their property and land. All in all, it was a case of those knowing how to use the Fear and controlling those that were afraid that if they did not agree with the on that was doing the accusing, they would be next to be called a Witch. It was just easier to go along with the program and stay below the radar, and live. Or stand up and deny the charges and die in prison.

Most of the so called Satanists are followers of Ayn Rand, not real generous sorts, but not in your business either, not like fundamentalist Christians. There are of course some darker cults, luckily most went out with the 70s and 80s.
