Do your own research.

That's my suggestion. There are MANY types of programming...I think you need a basic clue before you just decide to "program."

I would say start with Python or Ruby. One of Zed Shaw's books. "learn python the hard way". And there's really cool free classes on Coursera, one of them you build a web browser and another one, you build a search engine. Don't start with C++. And for questions, the best site is Stack Overflow.

Download Visual Studio Express (free) and follow the tutorials:

Study of C++ is great for grasping OOP and lower level functionality, but VS is fine for writing C++ too (when/if you actually ever needed to).

c++ Is great to start learning but if your looking for something a little easier I would try visual basics aka VB.net
You can get all the software you need to start programming in both languages and then some with Microsoft Visual Studio I am sure others might have better suggestions but that is what I started off with.

Also if you want something really easy that is not used anymore but it will at least give you an idea of what to expect when programming try qbasic. It is like the 1st programming language ever and is ran through dos but it will definitely teach you some skills that can be used when programming in other languages.

Looks like you want to use either C. C++, or Java.

They are all object oriented languages, but I recommend learning C first. The others will come quickly.

See if you can download a free C compiler online, there are some. Then just start with simple programs to learn syntax and structure.

*I have my college degree in computer science with an emphasis on programming, so I do speak from experience. Too bad I hate technology now.

Oh boy...
Are you in trouble.

You need to be an expert in plain C for that.
It takes years to become an expert in C.

Then you need to learn Linux system calls.

My advice... Give up this crazy idea of becoming a programmer. It's not worth it.
You'll only cause damage to your body.

Re: i want to start programming but dont know where to begin
You could try to to start with C, otherwise, if its too dry, start with an object oriented language.

Learn the basics, enough to write your own little stupid apps. Then, read and read again and again and again others source code. Find ways to apply the new functions to your dumb little apps till you start to really understand the flows. Sooner or later you will become consciously competent and then, if it doesnt happen naturally, seek out IRL problems to solve with developing your own coded solution. If you start doing interesting/impressive/unique stuff, start a portfolio.

Have fun.

1, Get a free programming language like Perl

[link to www.perl.org]

2. learn how to use it

3. learn C

4. write hundreds of programs in C

5. read and understand the Linux Kernel source code

6. write your own kernel

7. ???

8. PROFIT!!

Re: i want to start programming but dont know where to begin
If you want to program. First you have to learn how a computer actually functions.

You need to learn binary math (ADD, SUB, MUL, DIV, BITWISE) and understand how data is stored, such as Hex code and ASCII table (00-FF).

Then learn binary logic (AND, OR, XOR, NOT, TRUE, FALSE).

After all that, then you'll be ready to START learning programming. Not before that, really.

Once you learn the basics of programming, then you can learn OOP.

Then you should learn algorithms (sorting, searching).
Then you should learn patterns and tools.

You must learn these languages and/or systems:

C++ (language)

php (web script)

mysql (web-accessible database)

If you learn these 3 languages/scripts/systems and become proficient at their use and, particularly, their integration so to achieve web interactivity, e.g., a person being able to, say, access the GPAs of all the business majors ever graduated from Standford by name of student and year of graduation, then you'll become a millionaire.

No shit.

You've got to be kidding. C++ is increasingly irrelevant and not a good beginner language.

Start with Java or Python.

What is your objective?

Are you going to be programming a model of the universe inside a supercomputer for Area51, or a hotel management system, or to compete in robot wars in your spare time or to help mom bake cookies?

Because that changes what you need to learn and to what depth.

If you want to make video games, you'll need to learn C++.

If you want to operate a business, it is best to learn Java and/or C#.

Before you do, think about your target audience. Then label it so that it reflects the group. The label then could be used to relay your programming.
