Even the tamest, sweetest dog will take after their numbnut owners and turn psycho, and you clearly don't need any more crazy in your life!

Praise the behavior you want--"Good girl! Good dog"--"correct"--by grabbing by the scruff of the neck, behind the head, like a mother dog carrying her pup--and shake, saying firmly in an authoritarian voice "No, Bad!"

Be consistent. ALWAYS correct what you don't want--especially "jumping up" on people
"No! No jumping up! Baad!"
Those behaviors are not "cute" when a dog--especially a big dog--matures.
Consistency.
YOU are the "big dog" in the house. The pup should respect your authority. NEVER ignore--or reward--misbehavior.
Start immediately before the pup gets confused about what is ok to do, sometimes, and bad other times.
NEVER correct behavior that you don't "catch in the act.
If you find pee on the floor--watch carefully, catch the pup in the act, and "correct"
Better, walk enough so that it doesn't happen. Put the dog on a leash, take it out, say "get busy" When it pees or poops, Praise in an excited high pitched excited voice. "Good dog--get busy--good dog"
She will learn in days that "Get busy means pee or poop--outside.
Consistency is key. This requires much time. It is hard to raise a good well behaved dog on weekends alone. Dogs left alone find something to do. They naturally like to chew. Make sure they have what they know to be their own thing to chew on--not your shoe.
Good luck. Bee the leader of the pack, be firm, consistent--never threatening or violent, unless you want a confused and potentially violent snapping dog.
It is kind of like training good behavior in a child. Reward--PRAISE--of what you wsnt--and correction of what you don't want
Consider crate training--the dog will come to see the crate as his own cave and be happy there, a place of their own to retreat to.

Don't worry. The dog will have you trained in no time!

My grandkid had a pitbull lab mix that stayed here for a while. I'm not overly fond of them, bugger ate my yard chair so he stays with my daughter. But if shit comes to a head, I'll have that dog back here quicker than shit.

Did you know that only Americans crate their dogs. When I learned from other countries, it makes total sense. The reason was that crating the dog he won't make a mess. SH....T, I would be more than happy to pick up the mess if 1 TIME the dog protected me. I have crates but only use it when a stranger comes to the house....like my insurance man....
Take your new dog around your property perimeter. Let him know what is OURS or MINE.
Don't let your dog be friendly with everyone, only family and friends who you expect to come over often. After all he is a watch dog. He SHOULD bark at the mailman, gas meter readers, etc.
If you don't know another language you can still make up words or sounds for your commands.....but you need to remember them, write them down.
I work from home, so I have the opportunity to train my dogs commands at lunch time. I don't always make it like work, I mix it with play.....
E.g. I got a hoola hoop to jump through, those dog agility training tubes they love, even a skateboard. I mix a fun event with a command event. I ride the skateboard with the dog in front of me through my kitchen and they get so thrilled. Then they try it on their own.
Enjoy your dog...it is so much fun on top of their job. With your bonding they will protect you with their last breath. I have not had such loyalty not even with a husband.
Still, I would highly recommend professional training (remember to use your other language,,,that's where I screwed up). Kintergarten puppy classes are mostly for potty, come, leave it, don't eat it, sit, stay, lay down, sleep. Real protection training would ve had from something like k9 training. The next step.

Make sure you socialize well or they get weird and protective for the wrong reasons. Also I speak to my dog like a human using sentences and very consistent word association. Once he got it his level of understanding just took off! It's unbelievable how many things my 6 yo Chihuahua understands. He can even decipher different foods! He'll come over and give me a kiss on command then go back to what he was doing. He also comes in every night to say good night and give me a kiss. And.. he can do amazing tricks!

Me again, don't get me wrong, a Chi isn't a guard dog but just try walking into my house. He's the best alarm you could have. He still gives me plenty of forewarning to access protection but I don't have to worry about company suing me.

How fun a puppy! Kinda should have gotten that breed a little younger..one thing teach the dog to always know/learn that you and your fiancee are the Afla dogs of your pack..
Problems if that is not learned by the dog... other than that have fun with your newest family member.
