You may not know it, but he tried to kill himself twice.

Tried to inhale gas from a stove first time, second time he slashed his wrists

Paul Anka wrote the song so probably him. Sinatra made it popular so i'm assuming it was him that was singing it most often. Or at least his version took off first shortly after was written.

Re: Frank Sinatra, was One of the most miserable people on the face of the Earth
I met him when my family was road tripping to Ft. Walton Beach FL in the mid 80's. I had to make a pit stop so we stopped at a restaurant they waited in the car.

I did my business and as I was walking out hoping to be ignored by the people there, just a few at the bar, but one of the guys said something to me so I stopped and talked for a second, he asked me to grab a seat and have a drink (I was 15 at the time). I tried to bow out gracefully saying that there were people waiting for me. We talked for about 7 minutes.

As I started to walk away the guy grabbed my wrist as said something like do you know who I am? If you were your mother you would be fawning over me. Haven't you ever heard of Ol' Blue Eyes? he said some other things that I can't remember, I was pretty scared by this time and the other guys at the bar were saying things like Frank let her go, she's just a young girl and other things. He let me go and said some things I really can't remember, then said you tell your mom that Frank Sinatra's in here, I bet she will be excited to see me. I said thank you, I will let her know, very nice meeting you. Then rushed out to the car.

About 15 minutes down the road I asked my mom if she had ever heard of a Frank Sinada or something like that, she said no, then I said he said something about Old Blue Eyes and he sings and acts. My mom and dad looked at each other and said Frank Sinatra? I said yeah, that's it. My mom got all excited and wanted to turn around but my dad said no, it couldn't be him.

I found out years later as I got into his music and movies that he did live in Florida. But by this experience I could see him being an unhappy guy.

Re: Frank Sinatra, was One of the most miserable people on the face of the Earth
On December 30, 1942, Sinatra made a "legendary opening" at the Paramount Theater in New York. Jack Benny later said, "I thought the goddamned building was going to cave in. I never heard such a commotion... All this for a fellow I never heard of." When Sinatra returned to the Paramount in October 1944, 35,000 fans caused a near riot outside the venue because they were not allowed in.[12]

Re: Frank Sinatra, was One of the most miserable people on the face of the Earth
Sinatra did not serve in the military during World War II. On December 11, 1943, he was classified 4-F ("Registrant not acceptable for military service") for a perforated eardrum by his draft board. Additionally, an FBI report on Sinatra, released in 1998, showed that the doctors had also written that he was a "neurotic" and "not acceptable material from a psychiatric standpoint." This was omitted from his record to avoid "undue unpleasantness for both the selectee and the induction service."[23][24] Active-duty servicemen, like journalist William Manchester, said of Sinatra, "I think Frank Sinatra was the most hated man of World War II, much more than Hitler", because Sinatra was back home making all of that money and being shown in photographs surrounded by beautiful women.[10]:91

How fluffy. I've read too much bad stuff about him to even consider liking him, and I'm not talking about gang stuff. I don't have the sites handy so I cannot place it here.

If you were interested, could search for Frank and Natalie Wood when she was a minor; Marilyn Monroe and others.

I could understand how he would try to do away with himself considering all of that mess.

Haha, thanks, I was pretty freaked out, they had been drinking which scared me even more than a strange old (old being relative, I was 15) guy grabbing my wrist. It scared me so much I remember the experience pretty clearly even now. Though it has turned into more of a cool story since it was Frank Sinatra and not just a random scary older guy.

Cranky Franky, when he came here in the uh 70's I think, he compared journalists to prostitutes, and the unions wen't out on strike in protest or something like that it was really bizarre.

They made movie about it in 2003 and it's not bad.

and btw, I thought the guy had one of the most flat, monotone voices I've ever heard. You listen to Dean Martin or Sammy Davis Jr. - THEY could sing. AWESOME talents. Sinatra was nothing compared to them.
