Catch a ride out to a country town and ask around.

It would work in Australia anyways.

Or just walk around your town and ask people if they need help.

The more you talk to the more chance you have.

I know you may feel like the only one but OP there are so many people in the same boat as you are.Just try to hang in there.Sometimes we get a break when we least expect it so hang on to hope.

Guess you can do this and don't know how hard/easy it would be to start your own. Look for farms near your area to work on

How about getting creative and looking for things? Was going to give you a link to wwoof, an organization that lists farms that are hiring, some for money, some for room and board, and some offer both. Unfortunately, looks like they went to a pay system and you have to pay 30. now to access the info.

Have you checked your local newspaper, craigslist, your rural newsletter or paper for farmers (here it's called RFD news, don't know what it is where you are, but all farming communities have one) grain elevator bulletin boards, farm supply bulletin boards? You can get a wealth of information from finding which restaurant/coffee shop the local farmers hang out.

They congregate in small coffee shops in the early morning. Drop in, have some coffee, eavesdrop and be friendly but not pushy. They know newcomers, are observant, and are curious. Come early, be polite, and let their curiosity build. Won't take long before they just "have" to find out what you're about. So when you finally say "hi, nice day", they'll be real eager to chat with you. LOL.

Have you considered natural resources, like park ranger, forest ranger, naturalist, etc. ? Most of them offer inhouse and don't advertise publicly. You can find most online but you have to look. Not something that's going to come in a flyer to your door.

National forests pay well and have a good benefit package. State parks have a wide variety of positions, as do smaller local park districts. Some of the smaller ones with trails have a hard time keeping someone to patrol the trails and keep an eye on things, help people in distress, etc. There's a wide variety of opportunity there and it sounds like you like outdoors.

Don't let nasty thoughts come in your mind. It's tough out there right now and you've got plenty of company. Get creative and you'll come up with something. Hopefully it will be something that you enjoy and can be proud of. Hang in there!

Your in a state of depression. Finding something to do will get your mind off the things troubling you. Stay active... The more you sit around and do nothing the worse it will get.

Sad that family isn't involved enough to help, but it's great that you've decided to be sober. That, in itself, will get you far.

You want to do something productive that benefits a group. First thing I thought of was a local MMRD. Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilites. The sheltered workshops are always looking for help, sometimes you can get on a sub (substitute) list and fill in for someone who is out sick or on vacation. Great pay and rewarding work if you like working with people with challenges. The only one of your criteria it fits though, is benefitting a group and I'm not sure how you relate to people with challenges, or even if you have a "clean" background to qualify. No felony, criminal, drug, or child, or adult abuse violations.

What I'm reading indicates maybe you're depressed, lonely, had and alcohol problem, but want to do something

I can't think of a group with the above traits. Probably because many of those traits don't go along with motivation, drive and being productive.

Not meaning to be insulting, and it's great you want to benefit others. Can you think of anything that would fall into the category, or explain how my analysis is wrong so we can maybe be better help? Can you define "like minded people" and "some kind of community"?

So, how hard are you willing to work? What problems do you have that need to be solved? What would be your perfect outcome from this glp venture?

My advice, if needed, Stay away from any drug of any kind mainly depressants including alcohol. They make it ten times harder.

I'll try it more diplomatically OP. In your mind, what do you have to offer a farmer and what do you want in return?

You said room and board. That can be a tent out back with a hand pump and outhouse, or wall to wall carpeted air conditioned room with wi fi. Food can be a fast food sandwich or a hearty meal.

Maybe you should try selling yourself here. Tell about yourself, your likes, dislikes, skills. For example, do you like animals, or prefer working with machinery? Can you operate farm equipment or work on it? Can you lift heavy things? Are you a day person, night owl, like company or prefer to work alone? What jobs have you had?

Farmers are paying 8.00 an hr. for baling hay right now. Have you ever done that? It sucks. It's baled in sunny hot weather and if it isn't a modern rig baling, you're hoisting bale after bale from the machine to a trailer you're standing on while it's moving, being pulled behind the tractor. The bales weigh from 40 to 60 lbs. It's not rewarding work.

A tent out back with a hand pump doesn't sound like much for a day like that, does it? It would be nice to see if what you have in your mind is something compatible with what a farmer would want.
