Sadly I went through this with my grandmother. The chemo eventually killed her not the cancer. It's a personal choice about quality of life and how she wants to spend her time. There is alternative therapies involving Vit. C and other IV treatments. So sorry to hear, you and your family are in my prayers.

Thanks for your response. I know there are alternative treatments, but none seem to offer any more than a few extra months. My poor mom is left with the feeling: what is the point of doing anything? I don't blame her for feeling that way. It doesn't help that she has had a very tough last 20 years of her life, with a messy divorce and two of 4 children turning against her.

I'm so sorry OP. I guess none of us really know for sure what we would do until we're in that situation. Just don't let the doctor talk her into something she is not comfortable with. I guess she has had a second opinion? Sending prayers your way.

Chemo will lower the quality but might increase quantity.

At that age, I think the quality over rules quantity.

I have to say that there's not one post on here from someone who has the first clue what cancer does to you.

Do you wish your Mum to die in the most excruciating agony possible or would you like her to go with some dignity?
Chaemo's not the most palatable treatment but having worked in oncology centres in the past and having 1st hand experience of someone with cancer, chaemo can help to protect that dignity.

If my Mum had been diagnosed earlier than she was maybe she'd have died in a lot more peace than she did had she had treatment.
Her tortured face will stay with me forever.

The other fact is that without treatment she will definitely die.
With treatment there's always a faint chance.

My dad died of AML...he did not have any cemo as the
docktors a the time felt it would not help much...he was
79ys old. I must say he died a very peaceful death 6 months
after being diagnosed....he asked me to stay with him one
night and just kind of went to sleep.

Abstract

Bioactive components from dietary supplements such as curcumin may represent attractive agents for cancer prevention or treatment. DNA methylation plays a critical role in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) development, and presents an excellent target for treatment of this disease. However, it remains largely unknown how curcumin, a component of the popular Indian spice turmeric, plays a role in DNA hypomethylation to reactivate silenced tumor suppressor genes and to present a potential treatment option for AML. Here we show that curcumin down-regulates DNMT1 expression in AML cell lines, both in vitro and in vivo, and in primary AML cells ex vivo. Mechanistically, curcumin reduced the expression of positive regulators of DNMT1, p65 and Sp1, which correlated with a reduction in binding of these transcription factors to the DNMT1 promoter in AML cell lines. This curcumin-mediated down-regulation of DNMT1 expression was concomitant with p15(INK4B) tumor suppressor gene reactivation, hypomethylation of the p15(INK4B) promoter, G1 cell cycle arrest, and induction of tumor cell apoptosis in vitro. In mice implanted with the human AML MV4-11 cell line, administration of curcumin resulted in remarkable suppression of AML tumor growth. Collectively, our data indicate that curcumin shows promise as a potential treatment for AML, and our findings provide a basis for future studies to test the clinical efficacy of curcumin - whether used as a single agent or as an adjuvant - for AML treatment.

Abstract

Acute promyelocytic leukaemia (APL) patients are successfully treated with all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA). However, concurrent chemotherapy is still necessary and less toxic therapeutic approaches are needed. Earlier studies suggested that in haematopoietic neoplasms, the green tea polyphenol epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) induces cell death without adversely affecting healthy cells. We aimed at deciphering the molecular mechanism of EGCG-induced cell death in acute myeloid leukaemia (AML). A significant increase of death-associated protein kinase 2 (DAPK2) levels was found in AML cells upon EGCG treatment paralleled by increased cell death that was significantly reduced upon silencing of DAPK2. Moreover, combined ATRA and EGCG treatment resulted in cooperative DAPK2 induction and potentiated differentiation. EGCG toxicity of primary AML blasts correlated with 67 kDa laminin receptor (67LR) expression. Pretreatment of AML cells with ATRA, causing downregulation of 67LR, rendered these cells resistant to EGCG-mediated cell death. In summary, it was found that (i) DAPK2 is essential for EGCG-induced cell death in AML cells, (ii) ATRA and EGCG cotreatment significantly boosted neutrophil differentiation, and 67LR expression correlates with susceptibility of AML cells to EGCG. We thus suggest that EGCG, by selectively targeting leukaemic cells, may improve differentiation therapies for APL and chemotherapy for other AML subtypes.

She's lived a long life OP, and judging by your concern..a good life.

My mother was diagnosed AML Spring of her 86th year. She opted out of Chemo. She was able, however, to receive 'transfusions' (plasma/platelets?) that kept her going relatively comfortable for 7 months from beginning of diagnosis to end.

Verrrrrry peaceful ending when she stopped getting the transfusions. It was amazing. The only thing she ever took for pain was Tylenol once in the AM and once at night. Apparently the pain was in the bones. Also, she chilled easily...

Thanks everyone for your replies. The amazing thing is that the doctor has just discovered possible tuberculosis in her lungs. We don't know yet if this is a consequence of the AML or if maybe just maybe the apparent AML is actually a leukamoid reaction to the TB. The bone marrow test will confirm. Hoping for a simple case of TB which can be cured!!

She would live longer not doing anything. My friend died from it the treatment of it not the cancer. Months of chemo, then bone marrow transplant.

TB came back negative. Chromosomes normal. So, she is in moderate group. 48% live 5 years or more. Relapse after chemo 50%. She has decided to risk chemo.
