So, I guess GLP lives on Apple's earbuds? Are you all tone deaf? rockon

LMFAO! Broke rank and actually bought a pair of Shure E4Cs...Couldn't justify the extra loot for the 5s!

I was about to buy some Grado's myself. Then my girl bought me some Sennheisers. Saved me some money, but I think I lost out!

Van Alstine all the way. Magnepan 1.7 Tuba THT. My theater is another story. You are wasting your time with CD. Vinyl all the way. Best production [link to www.youtube.com]

Guess I'd be dating myself if told you I used to own a pair of Magnepan Magneplanars YEARS ago. They were electrostatics too! Biggest complaint though was that their sweet sopt way WAY to narrow. You literally had to be and STAY seated directly in front of them to enjoy them. Otherwise they were VERY sonically accurate!

What music are you guys listening to? I'd love to find something new!
 Quoting: Fret Wiz

Here's something old that may be new to ya... One that I used to audition a lot of my gear on was either Jean Michele Jarre's Equinoxe or Oxygene (but the Telarc Labs pressings). They're both nothing but oldschool analog synth, but hit nearly every frequency! LOL Some of the stuff I'd SWEAR rolls off around 20 and there's a good bunch of 17K plus! Real good stuff though! He was originally lumped into the "New Age" genre if you could even find him in the old record stores, but if you're familiar, he's kinda like a milder Kraftwerk without vocals!

I've auditioned quite a few different brands. From the sennheisers, all the way up through the etymotic research and I have to say I'm sadly disappointed in the LOT! I guess I'm expecting them to sound like my AKG K340s? For the dough? The money I shelled out for the Shures were fairly decent. If I remember correctly, they were right at $200.

Which Senn's did she get you? They were pretty decent from what I remember!

Yeah, she got me the HD 280's. They're pretty flat in their response, but a little boring. I prefer my Klipsch earbuds for listening, but stick to the Senn's for more critical listening (like vinyl processing). How long till I can buy some Grado's without offending her?

Harmon Kardon T403 Tuner, A402 amp and a pair of EPI TE/100's. Old junky CD player. These things rock my little listening room.

And yeah OP, Tool rocks!
 Quoting: Sledster

I have an HK receiver as well, great piece of hardware. Trying to figure out what to do w/ it after I went w/ the Marantz separates. I may power some outdoor speakers with it (they're Bose...yuk). Never trust a speaker manufacturer that won't publish specs!
 Quoting: Fret Wiz

Have a ton of other hardware as well, HK430, HK730, large stack of DBX XG Digital series stuff, a nice pair of Cizek speakers, a set of Bose 501 series 3 speakers that I use on the deck..etc etc..but I mostly use the HK seperates and cd player or my T7 turntable.
 Quoting: Sledster

Back when they were so epic! I want some 901's, but fear the re-surrounding work!
 Quoting: Fret Wiz

HA! Really? Don't waste your money. They're great for your patio or game room. IMO Dr Amar Bose is a GREAT marketing guy but that's about it.

LMMFAO! @offending her! You 'sound' like a purist to me, based on what I've read so far. I'd say NOW, but don't EVER use them in front of her! At least not yet! If anything, say you got them on CL for a smoking deal, and ONLY use them out of fear of breaking your favorite pair...HERS of course!!!

Wow...not my usual fare, but music and audio stuff is a big part of our lives. We have to have music in all parts of our little house we restored. Through the years we've had vintage tube gear, as well as monster transistor stuff driving Martin Logan electrostatics. These days due to springy floors and space we've gone mostly digital. A 500 gig hard drive fed to squeezeboxes for easy access, and also the crazy good MOG service where I feel like I have the worlds largest music library at my fingertips. The living room system has been downsized to a chic but awesome sub sat 5.1 from orb audio, and our newly redone screened back porch has a well reviewed and surprisingly satisfying Vizio soundbars/subwoofer that is Bluetooth and can be directed to MOG via my iPad!!
 Quoting: littlemiracles

The Martin Logans were ALWAYS a favorite of mine! Cost was prohibitive at the time when I first auditioned them! LOL My first wife got my first pair of MandL "Quests" DAMN I miss them speakers!!!

Re: Audiophiles! Let's talk about gear and great audio production!
Davidson Roth Day Sequerra FM broadcast monitor.
Bryston 1b preamp
Adcom GFA585 dual mono-blocks with the caps and high current upgrades
Apogee Centaur Major electrostatic hybrids
and JUST replaced my old Ohm Contra Bombarde sub for a new Velodyne 18.

And just for "shiggles", leading all the above is a Sota Sapphire with an Ortofon Concord MC pickup, with their stock pre- and a Sony ES 5 disc changer, and sadly missed and sitting off in the lonely corner a Nak Dragon (<---for those who know what that is...)

That's the master bedroom set.

There are HUGE benefits of having the "Stereo Trading Outlet" just a few towns over! It allows not only the old gear I used to salivate over, but terribly inexpensive prices too!!!
 Quoting: St3v3

Damn, dude! Impressive! NAK Dragon - best tape player ever?? You know your shit & I'm awed by your gear...wow, that's your MBR setup? Geez!
 Quoting: Fret Wiz

HOLY CARP! I'm finally caught up I didn't even think anybody commented!! And yes...Sadly that dragon is now the worlds most expensive paperweight! I'm waiting for the resurgence in tape! Whaddya think the chances are? *cries*

Uh oh! You just gave me GAS!!! (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) Thanks for the link! I never even knew the had such a thing? Or at least nowadays anyway! And TUBE too!? Gotta have it! Seriously though, the only ones I remember were hardware specific. They were an amp for a pair of old electrostatic headphones made in the early nineties. The name escapes me for the moment, but I'm sure I find them. Glad you showed me that! TYVM!

They (IMO) capitalized on Mag's idea, but greatly improved on it by not only hybridizing them by implementing a coil driven woofer, but they also wrapped their cellulose "tweeter" around a curved frame as to disperse the sound unlike shooting it straight at you like the Mags.

OK...Here goes.

Remember THE Infinity Reference Standards? You know, The 7 1/2 feet tall ones with 108 separate drivers that took a small grove of rosewood trees to make? Well, shortly after their debut, they created a more cost conscience consumer driven line, but also included the Reference Standard moniker AKA the RS series...

I have an original pair of black tabletop RS Infinitys in great shape, but in DIRE need of re-coning. They were my garage set, and sadly they have seen their better days, so if you know anybody. They're FREE to a good home. Yes free. :-)

Allisons are a VERY smoothly linear speaker!!! My brother-in-law uses them for his HT mains! I'm surprised he 'went for the gusto'! He's a cheap bastid. lol

Thanks for the comment above! My dad actually started me as a kid. He was a bass player for a huge (mainstream) group years ago and always had some serious gear around the house that we kids were not allowed to touch...That IS until I started showing an interest! So yeah, it's kinda in my blood I guess! I've been on that ever elusive quest for sonic purity since young! Cheers!

Laugh all you want. After about ten beers, it sounds pretty good. Just need a sub.

Bose sounds great. It's just not authentic. My Audi has a Bose system...sounds SO good, but I don't trust it!

Wow. Yeah, aside from the Bose 901's aren't they the most famous speaker ever? I'll re-cone your shit and split the profit with ya. You have gold there, fuck that "free" shit!

I honestly have no sentimental strings on them, so if you want them, they're yours my friend! Do as you wish. Keep the money for yourself if you sell them.

Pick up Andreas Vollenweider's White Winds for a tasty sonic treat!

Cheers!

Funny! My dad played guitar in a shitty cover band...but not so mainstream as yours! Yet, I learned a similar lesson as you...his Peavey 6x12 cab (plus radial horn) still graces my basement. We call him 'Brucey'. Sounds like hell, but good in it's own way...unique!

Re: Audiophiles! Let's talk about gear and great audio production!

The Martin Logans were ALWAYS a favorite of mine! Cost was prohibitive at the time when I first auditioned them! LOL My first wife got my first pair of MandL "Quests" DAMN I miss them speakers!!!

My God, they are sexy! Would love to hear them!

My Ex was too! LOL

Do you know ANYBODY that was / is a die hard Infinity fan? I have something for them if you do...

I had a pair of Infinity RS-II Reference Towers back in the 80's - nice speakers at the time. They were a work of art.

I'm a speaker whore, don't tempt me - you may just become my new best friend! I'm in VA, and I'd gladly re-cone your Infinitys, but I'd never steal from you, bro! Those things are worth money!
