Keeping it to that era, the best tip I could possibly give you would be to seek out an original set of JBL L112s. By far, the BEST speaker in that category EVER. Bar none. Everybody from the top studio producers, to the purist homeowners used them. Runner up and a bit less expensive the JBL L166 Horizon series (about half the cost, but alomst as musically accurate).


* BOTH were categorized as a "Bookshelf" speaker, but were in truth, floor standing size (studio monitor) with 12 inch woofers!

Figured I would jump on the bandwagon, Im mostly portable audio. My DAP is a 1st gen zune 30gb (Still running strong as ever) and for amplification I have a JDS Labs C5 Amp, A RSA Predator USB DAC/AMP, and a RSA F-35 Balance Lightning amp. My cans include: Beyerdynamic Tesla T1, Senheiser Hd 800 and Ultimate ears custom reference monitors.

I moved to Arizona and the heat was not too kind to them...I was sad to see them go

They are good, but definitely not worth the price to be honest. I actually forgot to mention my brainwavz hm5s, those are definitely worth the money and don't sound much different than the $1k+ cans that I have. Very neutral cans but I like neutral, not too much emphasis on one spectrum and can easily be changed by the EQ.

I love my beyers. Audio technica makes some good stuff too.

Nice thread, OP. Don't know if you've visited audioasylum, but it's a great place for hi-fi. Like most sites, you have to wade through the inane to get to the gems but they're worth it. Site covers all aspects of hi end audio from cables to speakers analog and tubes, etc.

I'm running all tubes (BAT VK60 amp and 5i preap), Nottingham Spacedeck turntable w/ dynavector MK17 cart and Meadowland Shearwater speakers.

Another smaller rig is all Cayin (tubed integrated amp and ss ceedee player) with
older B&W 601 speakers.

Good listening (mofi label has some good vinyl reissues).

Audio Technica made a real good turntable cartridge! I use their interconnect RCAs.

These aren't getting a good rap on the 'net, they seem like Fischer clones, but I respect your opinion. They don't seem too neutral from people's reviews, what are the 1k cans you're comparing them to?

AHHHH..The good ole' Matrix series! I was waiting for somebody to post up on them! The were a SERIOUS speaker a few years back! I haven't owned a set in years though, so I don't even know if they're still around or not... GRAET stuff you have there..ALL of it!

Earlier you mentioned the Harmann stuff? Ya know, JBL was actually bought out by "Harmann International" a few years back. I guess business must be good. Is their stuff any good these days? Or you pimpin a vintage receiver?

Yeah, I'm familiar w/ audioasylum, great site. I get a lot of my vinyl from acousticsounds, they're a little pricey, but their service is great.

My Sennheisers, I'm not happy with them honestly. Those brainwavz actually use the same driver as the fa-003 but are cheaper. I have wooden cups on them too which help the sound alittle.

Mine was all damaged from the Oklahoma Tornadoes. Snake Farm Insurance is being terrible, but after jumping thru hoops and documenting all extremely visible damage from two sf adjusters and my public adjuster and then documentation from service centers we had to drive a total of 8 hours (as we have no high end dealers close to our home) I finally have all the paperwork for these sob's to pay.

Glad you know about the asylum. Another good place to get used gear at a reasonable price is at audiogon. Front owners (not the brick and mortar or online stores) offer good prices on high end gear. I've sold a lot (and bought a bit) on this site and many guys just roll gear. Again, thanks for the thread, OP.

On another note, thanks ST3. I noted you mentioned audio technica earlier and I agree with you. Some good and resonable priced carts from them. I have a Thorens 160 tt in one of my kids system and I toyed with the AT cart, but went with a reasonably price Grado. I guess that's the fun of it. Trying a lot of gear until you find the fit. All good things to you, ST3
