Re: Everyone: Be Alert & Ready
Even if there isn't an end of the world situation, it is always good to be prepared anyway. Back in 2005, we were without power for 4 days due to Katrina. And we live 200 miles from the gulf coast and it was still a Category 1 storm when it hit my area. My son and I ended up staying over at my parents house, but it taught me a lot about needing to get prepared.

Look at the people in New Joisey who were digging through garbage cans for food because they didn't prepare for anything. Do you want to end up like them??

I'm sure you cold even find some YouTube videos showing you how to make some out of bed sheets.
 Quoting: JustinSider

But you'd need to make sure that the sheets were cotton or flannel - sheets with nylon/polyester woven in aren't nearly as absorbent (which is the general idea if I remember correctly!).

I had a ^%^%#$&^(* mouse move into my car and, and the *&^&^&R%&^ rodent got into my BOB.

Now I have to make a new one.

Remember everyone, stock up on mouse killers such as traps or poisons. You don't want all your preps eaten by communists fur bags who want to redistribute your food to their stomachs.

Don't do it now, do it when SHTF. Water lines could break in earth quakes. Water could be shut off by teh gov. Bathtub full of water could be your only drinking water for a bit.

cloth diapers are an awesome idea in a non crisis situation .. but if the people do not have access to rivers, lakes, etc .. they will not have the water to wash the diapers

Wells, rain water collection, solar stills.
When water is a precious commodity, you will really have to prioritize.

Got you ..woke up to reading your thread.. I am a preper and I thought something was going down ..

I also have 5 gallon containers of water on my porch .. and save plastic milk and orange juice containers on one shelf that I could also fill ..

I also installed a water spout in my cellar with valves ... because I use sub pumps to push out about 50 gallons of water a day .. which is perfectly good .. so if it isn't tainted I can use that ..

I also keep plenty of bleach for the river water by my house ..

Luckily I own a pool business and have chemical city in my store that has plenty of good uses ..

I am just think if for some reason it is radioactive or there is no access or for some reason you couldn't leave your safe haven .. having a stock of disposable diapers will be much more important .. so having both would be the best ..

Re: Everyone: Be Alert & Ready
As I was going over my B.O.B (Bug-Out Bag)I added something at the last minute that I thought I would share. I didn't see it here altho I have not read every single post. Anyways, what I added was tools:

A ball peen hammer, a glass cutter, a camping saw (no blade just a threaded wire that you hold taut between two hands) and some wire cutters / needle-nose combo. The ball peen hammer sort of negates the need for a glass cutter, but the wire cutters could be useful for negotiating chain-link fence, etc. This is especially relevant to urbanites.

Certain tools could be very beneficial especially if the need to break in/out of certain areas, maybe steal a bike... hey I'm just saying, if there's something headed my way and the only thing between me and a chance to escape is some kid's $10 bike chain, sorry kid...

Get to know your surrounding environment (10-15 miles):

- renewable water source
- food resources
- native animals, travel, etc
- escape paths
- backup trails
- geocaching locations to keep redundant supplies
- best radio / cell signal locations
- naturally secure areas (caves, mountains/hills, thickets)
- nearest police/fire departments, hospitals
 Quoting: d1scr3t31

Get to know your neighbors. Invite your street over for a barbecue to get everyone talking. Mentally note your neighbors' jobs, skills, hobbies and assets. While you may not want to disclose your plan, unless you're around like-minded people, you can at least have a working plan that could be put to use in a SHTF scenario. You can start building your network/community with just simple proactive planning. Look for:

- medical professionals, veterinary
- communications / ham radio hobbyists
- farmers, gardeners, beekeepers
- cooking, baking expertise
- military, police experience
- firefighters, first responders, boyscouts
- electrical engineers
- mechanics
- hunters, fishermen
- entertainers (musicians, singers, comedy, etc)
- gunsmithing, blacksmithing
- carpenters, masons
- dogs for hunting/security, cats for rodent management
- meat dehydration experts
- vegetable canning, storing experts
- beer, wine makers
- teachers

A long time ago, for no reason, I used to think who would be necessary to say a spaceship venturing out for the first time if they had to pick less than 700 people.

What about those that appear to have no skills? Do you teach them? Or pass them by?

Haha I often thought about the helpless ones. Most of the men in my neighborhood are the metrosexual type and the women tend to be uptight whiney women. I'm sure they hardly have a weeks worth of food in their cupboard, and probably no water. I doubt any of them have shot a gun in their lives. However, strength in numbers so I suppose you'd be better off teaching them if they are willing to do the work.

I basically have nothing to bug out with, except a bag of carbohydrates and a knife. Good shoes are essential. Socks probably too; and they are useful for other things. Metal in all forms is useful -- nail clippers, a file, some metal currency. All good.
 Quoting: Charles Cheese XIV 11669397

One thing my parents told me about living through the Great Depression is that most people could not afford shoes and wore really beat up and raggedly shoes.

So, even in the event of an economic collapse, it's a great idea to have several pair of good, sturdy leather shoes and boots put aside for such a time.
