Moving to Canada--What should I expect?
I'll be making a move to Canada within the year. Scouting out locations this Summer. I might move by Fall, but more likely early 2014.

I'm staying in my general region (Pac NW) and demographics-wise, not much will change over my present location.

I'd like some input from Canadian friends: What would you say is the biggest difference between Canada and the USA?

Also, what is your view of the US? What are its biggest strengths and weaknesses, and how is Canada better or worse there?

Yup and no hand guns, no conceal carry or assault rifles.

No stand your ground laws. A criminal has every right to break in your house and be safe while doing it or you will get charged or sued.

Canada is good.

Taxes are higher but Healthcare is Universal, you wont die on the street like in America. Less Poverty, Homelessness, Drugs, Violence. People are polite and more friendly. Far from being overpopulated but has great cities. I am partial to Toronto and Montreal but Vancouver and BC are great. Overall Canada is a better country than America. America is downright scary. I barely recognize it when I come back.

Sad Really.

Re: Moving to Canada--What should I expect?
It is much more difficult to start your own business compared to the States. Social is better but business is worse. Most jobs in the cities are service jobs: retail, cafe, accountant, doctor, etc. It is difficult to get into the latter category (accountant, doctor, etc.) as they sometimes discriminate on the institutional level (i.e you passed the exams but they still won't take you). You might have to redo your undergrad etc. Just be aware of those things.

Re: Moving to Canada--What should I expect?
I would try and make a move to somewhere on the west coast. I currently live in the interior of BC but will be moving further west in a few months as well. As the previous post suggested expect to pay a lot more for housing, food, vehicles (repairs etc.) the cost of living is much more. Have you considered living in the US right at the border and working in Canada. I work in the mining industry and here at work we have a few guys that live in Montana (Eureka) and just keep a cheap apartment M-F type of thing here in Canada.. These fellas always talk about how much money they are saving by doing this. As for taxes and other such things I can not comment. In general though they seem to think it is worth it. I should say that these fellas also say how much more they get paid on this side of the border compared to the same job in America. The trade off is things are more expensive, also, you have food items that we simply can not get here. One other thing, I recall these same fellas talking about how difficult it is/was to obtain any kind of bank loan, I remember last year our banks flat out denied them of a loan to purchase something. Talk to a bank manager about what items you would need to accomplish any sort of financial hurdles that will be put in your way. Hope this helps
IMHO you will find happy outgoing people most anywhere you settle. Keep in mind we Canadians are considered "weather stripping" for the US Northern Border, small wonder we even get mentioned at all in the US media.

This is something I have considered. A job in transportation or boilermaking which allows me to cross the border. I'd have to research visa rules.

As far as expensive, it is relative. I'm a minimalist already, and intend to stay so. I don't need a big house or fast car to impress people I don't like.

It's a big learning curve. I need to stash away at least $20K before I make the move, as it might take me a while to get established in the labor pool. I do have a lot of family connections up there, some of whom were employed by hydro/railroads, etc who I could network with.
