Why does it benefit the Government to have a high prison population?
I keep hearing about the Government in the US wanting to put people into prison and camps and that it has the highest prison population in the world.

Who does it benefit if poor people are locked up and tax money used to maintain them. It seems like a lose lose.

The prison industry (private corporations) is big business in the U.S.

^this

It is also a great boon for companies that form to use the inmates for dirt cheap labor.

A lot of call centers are staffed by inmates making a couple of bucks an hour and the companies get incentives for "training" the inmates.

It's almost like free slave labor because they really don't have to pay them to work. The slaves have to work for their freedom if they deserve it according to the parole boards.

Re: Why does it benefit the Government to have a high prison population?
it benefits the private companies in their "employ",,, and cheap labor products they produce,,,

But the govt? Well, a quick repeal of drug laws would empty alot of prisons and open up space for a martial law crackdown...

It is more of a tax burden then that

They are required to pay the inmates a state mandated minimum wage but the companies receive more than that compensation in tax incentives and grants.

The Federal Government runs most prisons....not private companies.

Lie much? thwak

It's big business for the government since it keeps all the prison guards and ALL RELATED LAW ENFORCEMENT on government payrolls....at the cost of the taxpayer of course.

So how does the federal government make money from a population behind bars? by making cheap crap? I don't buy that. You can have cheap crap made for next to nothing these days if you outsource the labor to india.

And keeping people on their payroll? Wouldn't it be better for them to put the people's tax money in their pockets instead of using it to pay a prison guard.

Sorry, I just don't get it.

The Federal government keeps THOUSANDS UPON THOUSANDS of corrections officers, ATF, Federal Marshals,
parole officers, border patrol, state police, local police....etc etc....on and on...
....ON THE PAYROLL by putting and keeping people in jail.

It's the governments "BIG BUSINESS".

Without people being put in jail for minor offenses.....many these GOVERNMENT JOBS would not need to exist.

THE USA HAS THE MOST PEOPLE IN PRISON/JAIL ON PLANET EARTH.

jail

This is why:

(Note: There are many facets to this; many unrelated things which unseemingly work together)

In other countries such as China and Mexico, goods are produced with cheap labor. In USA, we have minimum wages and red tape. In order to compete with slave labor, we have to have people making $0.11 cents an hr, in slave labor prison camps. We have this now in our prison system.

The Prisons them selves are private companies, which are owned by Prison Industrial Complex mega companies, and this is where it gets interesting because, some of the same CEOs of the prison complex, are also some of the same CEOs of lets say a few major record labels. They have some of the same board members, and were responsible for hiphops twist from political to gangster, in an effort to increase crime/prison population. This worked in concert with laws, such as those crack laws, and later the gun clamp and assault weapons ban of the 90s.

Now, the prison complex is a grown up, vertically and horizontally integrated, with synergy from it's partners, the other major complexes. We are talking companies like Bain Capital, mitt romneys company - tied to creating the chinese video spy grid, which is also almost here fully.

Fuckin spy cameras hooked to hiphop and slave labor new world order shit.

And to the guy who said not one good answer you are right, there is NO good answer to this.
