Your ten year old could be studying at university-level for free! Imagine the possibilities! Another thing, at many universities you can "test out" of some lower level courses by passing on exam. Well, learn the subject online then pass the exam at your university. Do that several times and you'll save a lot of money and time. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 44177082 They have come to be called MOOCs; massive open online course. They are online platforms for participating universities to offer courses from their faculty, for free, to anyone. Sure, you don't get the college credit that a fee paying student would receive. But if you could afford that you'd be at the university :/ It's not a scam or a money earner or anything like that at all. I've done various of their courses already. And even if I hadn't it only takes a few minutes looking and reading to realise what they are. They are simply free versions of courses given by universities. Sometimes they are exactly what a fee paying student, in attendance at the uni would receive. Sometimes they are modified to suit being online. Sometimes the actual lectures are filmed. You get homework which is graded, FREE reading materials to download and advice on taking your studies further if you wish. If you pass all the assignments you get a certificate. Simple. Doubters. ok, so what have your passes done for you? have they earned you a good paying job? as was said above, yes, you can learn stuff, which is great, but are the certs RECOGNISED anywhere? **** Slave mentality..... So you have the degree, a job, and are already earning bucks and are doing this to keep the brain ticking. Yet my points remain valid and yours, 'mooc'.!!!!! The courses are free but they do not advance your job prospects, do not ean any more money than what you already earn, have no formal recognition, are not credits and do absolutely nothing whatsoever other than promote the organizations asoociated with these courses. Mind you if you want to know all about what hallens after you take a shit, there is a course on sewage. So - and for luddites everywhere, the difference between these moocs and wikipedia is that wikipedia has much more information and does not require you to register? |

That's a skill everyone needs to learn. Then they need to teach cooking courses. That could be a survival skill. Handling your finances, balancing a checkbook, typing, being able to write in cursive language, paying your bills on time, learning financial responsibility, etc...these are all skills that must be learned in order to survive. and 90% of the masses don't know any of these things. |

What do you do that you feel improves your life or prospects in some way? I'm not saying a mooc is the only path to enlightenment. Of course it isn't. But saying that they are worthless for improving yourself and job prospects is wrong. Yes, you can find everything online, in wikis for sure. But undertaking a structured syllabus, given by experienced tutors can instill ambition, drive and determination. If you don't have a degree and/or job and you would like one, I think it helps to have goals that require planning and commitment. Also, if you're actually really interested then it helps you achieve those goals. And achieving things you set out to do is empowering. Feeling empowered helps you get the things you ultimately want. Moocs may not be for you, but that doesn't mean they are utterly useless for other people in your position. Just what is it that you want to do? |

Most employers nowadays are looking at portfolios, experience, etc. It seems a formal education is not the top priority it was a few years ago. The internet is much to blame for this and its actually a good thing. I learned far more on my own than I EVER would at the college I attended. Hell, I taught most of my teachers the correct way to do things. Most of the teachers were just handed the material and told to teach it. You can't be hands on experience with books . |
