I haven't had health insurance since 1991 and don't plan on getting any.

I haven't had any since 2002, but I will get some when I can, because even a broken ankle can cost $15,000.00, I don't want my family to loose all of the property I plan to leave them because of my medical bills, FFS!

my girlfriend's chemo therapy- $10,000. per Tx X 3- , ONE MG. of Ativan w/ the chemo. billed for $600.00!
Visit to the E.R. for heart palpitations: EKG, chest X-ray, CBC and Chem panel= $14,000.!!!! Wonder why insurance is so expensive???? Why do hospitals get away with these prices??? Why do malpractice insurance rates put MD's out of business? The whole friggin system is broken and needs an overhaul that is not gonna happen!

They charge people with insurance or jobs out the ass for all the people who walk in with zero ability or desire to pay them back.

@ OP. Hospitals and Doctors generally charge 400%-600% more for cash payers than what insurance companies end up paying.

I work in a hospital. Every year, we just barely balance our financials. Some years, we run under.

I'm not here to defend the way hospitals charge.

But if you research a little, you'll see it is the insurance companies that ultimately control the pricing and how hospitals bill out. It's a vicious cycle. Insurance companies only pay approx. 20-30% of the actual hospital bill. Without overcharging, hospitals would go under. In order for the hospital to get reimbursed for that $1 pill, they have to charge 2-3 times the actual amount...otherwise, they only get 20-30cents for it. Clearly, they can't survive paying full price for supplies, but only getting a fraction of the amount in return to pay for it.

It's a game. And hospitals are forced into playing it if they have any hope of surviving.

No, they CHARGE the same amount to both patients and insurance companies.

But the insurance companies only pay a fraction of the hospital bill. Whereas the patient is responsible for the entire amount. However, hospitals often have a cash-pay discount to balance that a bit.

They can't offer the same discount the insurance companies get. Because the insurance companies control the game.

Whether you pay the hospital, or you pay the insurance company...either way, someone is getting your money when you need medical care.

I have the best health insurance known to man! And its free offered to those who walk in obedience. It its available from the highest office of the land!!!!! Its offered by none other than the "Great Physician!" He also tells me, that i am in his hands and who is able to snatch me from them? He also is known as the Great Conqueror!

Hospitals write off millions of charity care per year primarily for people who use the ER as a clinic and have no intention of paying the bills. Federal Law does not allow to refuse care. They charge higher for other items to make the difference. Insurance companies are the driver in the current game and they always make a profit. Always. In new Obozocare those "uninsured" who have been getting care in the ER are required by law to buy insurance. BUT, the only way to enforce it is via the IRS on your tax return. HELLO! They don't pay taxes and DONT file! So the only ones screwed are the employed taxpaying citizens in this country ---- ONCE AGAIN.

I cancelled my insurance in January. There is no way that I will contribute one penny to the culture of death. My soul is worth more than anything on this earth. I refuse to cooperate or knuckle down to a law that goes against my Faith.

The insurance company negotiates a contract with the hospital and its providers. It says "ok if u let me pay this, I'll send more of my members to your hospital so we can both profit. Plus I'll keep my members healthy by offering preventive services to keep them from having to go to the ER. We will also make sure our members are not wasting hospital services by ensuring their procedures are medically necessary. Deal?" The HMO process which everyone likes to complain about is a more sufficient way for the hospital and insurance to BOTH save money, along with the patient.

We encourage our members to visit their PCP referrals to see specialists. We contract with our PCPs and pay them a certain amount per month for the services they are offering a certain amount of patients. Therefore making PCP visits are a lot lower co-pay. Since we already pay the PCP up front, and the member pays less to see their PCP, they are more inclined to pay the lower cost instead of going to random specialists with symptoms they think they are having or what they THINK could be wrong with them.

This also allows them to get the proper care from the very beginning which prevents them from going to the ER, possibly being admitted or taking up a room for observation. Hence, saving the hospital money. It is all negotiated in the contract.

We also require our members to receive an authorization to get any MRIs or CT scans. The physician will submit an authorization request with proven medical necessity showing the patient needs an MRI or CT scan. The request is reviewed by a medical director and is either approved or denied. The high tech scan payments are also a part of the negotiated contract.

Where we are all getting screwed is from the wasted services we are providing people without insurance; those who are not associated with the contracted rate. These are generally people who use and abuse the emergency room services because they don't have a regular doctor. I'm not saying either entity doesn't have it's own faults but insurance companies have rules and regulations just like any other entity. We can't pay for services that aren't proven medically necessary.

It was designed to work by having millions of young Americans buy into the system who are generally healthy, to offset the older citizens and people who have medical issues. This is one of the reasons Obama is paying huge money to get college students to spread the word about Obamacare. It was also designed that every State would cooperate and join in the program. But, States are still holding out and refusing to be a part of this program.

Iam an ER nurse. I get so upset of the abuse of the Er.
People with Medicaid or no insurance get free ct scans X-rays labs medications. They often return 2x in a day for the same stuiped complaint. That should not even be seen in the Er. But we can't say no to anyone. For instance mom brings in 1 yR old for a diaper rash at 3 am because the time is convent for her and she is not capable of actually making an appt at her familyndr and actually showing up. We actually have to treat the pt and it is paid out of our taxes for such an emergency of diaper rash. This is just one example . I could go on and on. On the other hand as a RN I can not afford to go to a Dr to get my painful back looked at because I can not afford it. There is so mug

Amen! I WORK for the insurance company and my benefits suck. Insurance premiums increasing due to the good old OBcare jacking it all up. We increased our copays for ER visits and the PCP visits are $0 -$15 (for our members) to try to reduce everyone's costs. It costs us at LEAST $50,000 plus for a member to go to the ER for let's say maybe cardiac arrest. I don't see all of what it costs the hospital because I only see the line details of what we are billed. Compare that to a simple $500 claim for a PCP visit. Everyone saves in the end.

I 100% agree with you. It's the ppl who don't have a clue as to what it costs to see a doctor that complain the most. You keep giving ppl free shit they'll never understand and appreciate the worth of a dollar. Not that it's worth much anymore but at least ppl could take pride in earning a few and seeing the importance of staying out of the ER unless it is a REAL emergency.

The system is broken and OBcare is going to demolish it.
