After some further research it would seem that there is nothing special or even that historical about it at all. The structure and ritual all seem to be based upon very basic ceremonial magic principles. A more mundane purpose does come to light though. To maintain peace among the perpetually warring tribes, Mecca was declared a sanctuary where no violence was allowed within 20 miles (32 km) of the Kaaba. This combat-free zone allowed Mecca to thrive not only as a place of pilgrimage, but also as a trading center.
