Why Do People Swear On The Bible?
When the Bible itself says NOT to

Matthew 5

34 But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God's throne:

35 Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King.

36 Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black.

37 But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.

That was sort of my next question

why would someone who doesn't care about the Bible swear on one? it makes about as much sense as swearing on a copy of Moby Dick

Last time I went to court I told the judge I wouldn't be swearing to any invisible beings. The judge was like wtf? I was like I don't believe in invisible things and won't be swearing to any. He changed it to do you promise to tell the whole truth and just dropped the God nonsense.

yep things that need changing and will at some stage I'm sure..

Someone may be asked to swear on the bible but in fact be proven to have lied but then be let off that lie as they do not believe in the bible.

Was it your next question or wasn't it? What the hell do you mean by "sort of"?

It makes as much sense, not about as much.

Look up the word "equivocate".

I don't and will not swear on the bible, or an oath to anything secret or anything else. The only thing I have sworn to is my wedding vows. I have kept those vows.

Unsurprisingly, you are not the first person to raise such a question. See here:

'Affirmation in law'

In law, an affirmation is a solemn declaration allowed to those who conscientiously object to taking an oath. An affirmation has exactly the same legal effect as an oath, but is usually taken to avoid the religious implications of an oath; it is thus legally binding but not considered a religious oath. Some religious minorities hold beliefs that allow them to make legally binding promises, but forbid them to swear an oath before God. Additionally, many decline to make a religious oath because they feel that to do so would be valueless or even inappropriate, especially in secular courts. In some jurisdictions, an affirmation may only be given if such a reason is provided.
